Help Using the AVSIM Forums

i know ya'all an in a transition with new software (never easy). how do you search forum posts? what button to click? i've tried all and only get the following server response (after a LLLLLOOOOONNNNNGGGG wait) - no topics are listed when the search is completed.

I've tried a site search but can't find an answer. Is there any way since the recent update to view the first unread post within the topic being viewed as we used to be able to?

Hi, Haven't used Avsim in a little while, came back today and everything has turned into some kind of question/answer forum, like one you would find on technet! Has avsim changed to this format, instead of a discussion forum? It's terrible! Change it back please!! Cheers,

Hi @ll, when I try to log in with a Win 8.1 tablet, I cannot enter characters into the input field of the popup. The instant that I press a key on the software keyboard, the popup closes. And a minor thing: after I have edited a topic, the button to save the changes says "Edit topic". This is a little bit confusing. Best regards

I had to disable (for now) the ability to paste raw formats into the text editor box. Members were unknowingly copying and pasting DIV, CSS, HTML, and other formatting elements into the message box and it was manipulating the rest of the page. For instance, one person copied an e-mail or a post to their clipboard, and pasted it into the box. The forum treated his post like a copy of the post he just copied and it looked very odd. I really liked the ability to just be able to copy and paste formats, but there was a hidden downside that I'm trying to mitigate. Hopefully we can turn this back on when we figure out a control for it.

Title says it all, where is that functionality gone to? I used that all the time!!

I'm a little confused. I get loads of notification emails(to the point where I almost tagged them as spam!)even though I unchecked everything I could uncheck in the notification settings. There is no option not to receive emails. The best I can do is to select 'Once a month'. All I would like, and I suspect many others would too, is to see which topics I've participated in and maybe a pop-up PM notification. You know, like in the old days. :-) Can do?

In the old forum we had the possibility of adding a tiny flag of any specific country. I used this in my signature, where I displayed both the Colombian and Argentinean flags. The flags were hosted at the following URLs: Colombia: http://forum.avsim.net/public/style_images/flags/co.png Argentina: http://forum.avsim.net/public/style_images/flags/ar.png I guess that, for other countries, you had just to change the 2-letter country code at the end. As you may see in my signature, these flags are not available anymore. Can them be brought back?

I was going to change my Display name in the forums. The instructions say that "This is the display name you wish to now use. Characters not permitted: [ ] | , ; $". However, after I input my new display name (Luis Hernández), I get a message saying that "The name can only contain these characters: a-zA-Z0-9 _". I don't want to drop the accent from my surname. How can I edit my display name then?

Hi guys, I know the AVSIM staff are working the kinks out of the new setup, but I wonder if it would be possible in the future (or even now?) to re-skin the forum to make it less glaringly white? Cheers.

Posted a screenshot this morning here and worked fine. Tried to post three more this afternoon and they will not show. Same format, from same photo storage but no go.

Sorry for the rant but a bit frustrated with this new forum. Why have this split screen with a large area on the right dedicated to everything I am not looking for and that takes up half the posting window making my screenshots and signature smaller than ever? Also look to the left and why is that area so large,,all it does is display my name and avatar (which is almost as big as my screenshots now). On top of it all,, it is complicated and very slow (starting to look and act like Photobucket). So maybe back to Flightsim.com which is simple, fast and it works.

Hi, I have a couple of active support threads going for a freeware beta I'm conducting (AIController). Does anyone know how to mark "best answer" using the new forum software so that it appears at the top of the thread? When I make the latest version available, I post a message and mark it as "best answer" so that users can get to it easily without having to search deep into the thread. Apologies in advance if this is a well-known feature of the new software. Thanks! -Roland Foster

I found the button that took me to the Unread Content and was happy to see all the options there. However I found two issues: 1. After getting it configured the way I had it in the old forums I found that when I logged in at a later time my settings were not saved and I had to set them all again. Can these settings be saved in your user profile as they were with the old forum software? 2. After I had the above mentioned settings configured the way I liked them, basically viewing all the most recent topics in the last 24 hours, I found that the "condensed" viewing option would not work. Hi all, each time I open a forum or a forum post, a pop-up appears asking wether the site may send notifications. Each time I tick the No option but the pop-up reappears with the next post. How can I disable the pop-up? I'm on FIrefox 51.0.1. Edit: The pop-up appears when any page loads on the avsim web pages, only exception is the library. Thank you! Sascha

The Forum now looks terrible, sorry.... not user friendly. Or maybe I miss something? How Can I check the last post from user? I dont see any info about it, only the main title, next must click to details, next the last post. Sorry but this idea is totally incomprehensible.

Is there a way to change the background or theme? It seems kind of bright and there's a lot of wasted white space on messages, so I feel like I am scrolling a lot more.

Is it possible to limit the 140+ list of forums to view the content that I want to follow, like a preference setting to select specific forums for the default view? Really would like to simplify the display and just read what one is interested in.

I am not sure I like how the new forum treats every entry as a question. This is for certain not true in the screenshot forum ! I know we are supposed to let some time pass to get used to a new layout, but this one takes up a lot of screen estate on 1080 screens ! I must adjust my zoomlevel to get some kind of overview. But probably it is better on 4k screens. eg. this is not a question I seek an answer for. There is no best answer in this case. thanks for all the hard work, Jan

Just curious if the development team had the option of giving the new forum a "dry run" before implementing live? Could have saved a lot of growing pains. (I know from personal experience :-) If not, then hopefully everyone can understand the position AVSIM is currently in making changes on the fly and to be patient with the process. I can certainly tolerate the idiosyncrasies of the new forum, it's really just flies in the prop-wash... This is a great community and helping others is what it's all about (in my opinion) so I will continue to focus on just that and everything else will fall into place eventually. Enjoy your day.

Who has time to search through sub forums out the wazoo to find some topic they posted in the day before and are curious to see new posts about it.
