Hangar Chat
This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar. Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here. Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc. Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view. I'm sure this doesn't belong in the FSX forum but dang if I know where to place it more properly. I'm hopeful some moderator will move it to the proper location. Since yesterday morning the Avsim forums have been loading with agonizing slowness to my computer--main page, individual forums, individual postings within the forums. All take anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds to load, some I have simply given up waiting for. All other forums I attend (and all other non-flight sim pages) load normally. What gives??

South Korea not happy. Wonder why? "It's true that captains acted in an authoritarian way in the cockpit in the past, but that's almost nonexistent now," South Korea's top daily newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, quoted an unidentified airline captain as saying Thursday. "It's unimaginable for a captain to ignore the first officer in an emergency." And the 2nd quote near the beginning of the article. Why would South Korea be unhappy? I wonder how cosy their regulator is with Asiana and KAL? Herman said analysis of the cockpit voice recorder indicated that until only shortly before impact, the pilots were unaware that the jet was flying far below the target speed and altitu…

I am sure may people here including myself are planning New dedicated Flight Sim Rigs right now. Its gonna cost a lot of money so the question is: Is Black Friday, Cyber Monday worth the wait. How good are those sales when it comes to cutting edge hardware like the i7 4770K or the GTX 780 or Asus SABERTOOTH Z87 etc. will the four and half months bring revisions to all this new hardware like 780's with 6gb or 4770's with solder under the heat spreader instead of TIM. Or is it just as good to start now. I would wait the 4.5 months if it made a significant difference to price or Hardware.

Since the beginning of time, freeware was a huge part in the FS community. Recently though, this has seemed to change. There seems to be a general consensus among the community here that freeware is dead. Here we will explore why it is, and, more importantly, why it isn't. The dead side of freeware. Over the past few years, freeware has gotten significantly less popular than it used to be. This is for a number of reasons. First and foremost is a raise in expectations. Unfortunately, many people have the misconception that freeware is of a lower quality then payware. Is some payware better than freeware? Absolutely. On the other hand, plenty of freeware is of equ…

When the fuselage is damaged by a truck or another aircraft for example I was wondering how these get fixed? Or even more critical wing parts. Incidents at airports are very common but I don't know how they would be repaired. Daniel

Hi guys, I hope this kind of post is ok in this forum... Just yesterday I received an email from AVSIM saying I hadn't been active for over a year, and that maybe I'd like to check in again! Well, I've been really busy working away on a personal project, a graphic novel, and it completely ate up the spare time I usually spend flight simming. But as coincidence would have it, it does involve flight simulation. I'm not sure it will be for everyone here, being combat oriented, but one chapter involves ww2 fighter engagements, and presents a story that is heavily based in my experiences flight simming in IL2, BoB2:WoV and War Thunder, but also draws on general knowl…

It's been very interesting to follow the two 'hot' threads about both the Twin Otter Extended and the Flight1 B200. I've taken part in them both, since my interest in following those threads is due to purchasing both planes. While you can't really compare the two planes, the threads are somewhat similar in that they both have extended discussions about perceived shortcomings in the products. This invariably turns into a debate where one side wants every perceived issue fixed, while the other side claims that we should be grateful to the developers and/or "you get what you pay for". I find it interesting, because it's a continuing issue - with each (stellar) rele…

If you're on a 3 degree glide slope on the approach and you're dropping/increasing speed, should you be using pitch (trimming) to control the speed? Doesn't that deviate you from your 3 degree glideslope? Cheers.

If there's a better forum for this I hope the moderators move it. PilotEdge is adding KSFO to their service area for at least a month starting on the 17th. They're a great bunch of controllers... Here's the announcement..... -------------------------------------- Starting Jul 17, San Francisco International Airport (KSFO) will be added as a supported airport on PilotEdge. This will be supported for at least the next 4 weeks, after which an announcement will be made regarding its operation. Limitations: The support for SFO includes the approach and enroute facilities required for flights to and from the existing coverage area (LAX, LAS, etc). It does not …

would you buy if money was not a problem. Now I would like to keep it reasonable, no private G5's or anything, I am talking about a typical GA aircraft. Would you buy a single engine or twin? I am not a real pilot so this is difficult for me to answer but I was thinking that the Beechcraft Baron G58 might be a great choice in terms of reliability, range and safety (although I am sure many would argue that a twin is not always as safe as a single). Interested in your comments on this.

Remember the incident to BA762 where the engine cowl doors became detached reported here? http://forum.avsim.net/topic/409765-engineers-and-flightcrew-slipped-up/?hl=%2Bcowl#entry2684543 http://forum.avsim.net/topic/409090-heathrow-incident/?hl=%2Bcowl#entry2683490 Today's Times reports that some passengers are sueing Airbus, and the engine manufacturer (IAE) for the psychological trauma they suffered. Although the incident occured in the UK on a London to Oslo flight, the case is being brought in the Circuit Court of Cook County Illinois, USA.

You're in a futuristic vehicle flying at a given speed. You need to dock with the mothership through its trap door on the underside. You match the speed of the flying mothership so you are under the trap door. Trap door opens and you use your vertical thrusts to enter into the hanger bay. Trap door closes. At what point of the sequence does your horizontal speed become zero? When is your speed relative to the inside of the mothership? When the trap door closes or when you enter inside the ship?

Any Airport Live addicts here? I'm kinda addicted to this programme. Hosts are good, presentation is dynamic, you will not get bored easily. In first 3 episodes the main subject is ATC and the staff in the tower, but also they jump from topic to topic around the airport pretty fast to keep you entertained. Your thoughts? http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p018t3xg

http://www.rte.ie/news/2013/0712/462191-paris-derailment/ This has not been a good week for rail or aviation it looks like... :( Six people killed in a train accident in Paris, expected to rise. Between this, the Canadian Train Crash, the Asiana 777, and now the Ethiopian Dreamliner, there's been quite the week of accidents. Regard, Ró.

As I am sure you have noticed, we were off line for a couple of hours today. Our MySQL database took a nose dive sometime last night and we finally were able to put it right. We will be doing some further work on the database system and will let everyone know when we expect to go off line, if at all, to do that work.

Hi Guys, I live in Thailand It's time to give away my PC to my nephew. I am building a new pc now. I have not paid much attention to pc technologies in the past 4 years. Last time I know I was using GTX 280. This PC has 3 functions for me. 1.Flight simulator 2. some 1st person shooting 3. Racing simulator. I went to gather information as to what parts to put in and how much and came out with below list. My goal is to build a very high performing PC without using the top CPU and GPU model. Also I want flightX be able to run smoothly with everything turned on. Chassis Volair SIM 700 CPU i7 4770k 353.1 Mainboard Sabertooth 319.7 HDD WD2tbx2in raid1 179.3 SSD vector512…

Wow... July has not been a good month of aviation news. Just a few hours ago, a small GA plane crash landed at Houston Bush Airport. It doesn't say which kind of airplane it is, but from the pictures, it looks like a Mooney. Here's the article with video: http://www.click2houston.com/news/small-plane-catches-fire-upon-landing-at-bush-airport/-/1735978/20924698/-/64ku0az/-/index.html

A train carrying crude oil being exported to the US derailed and exploded while passing through a small town of Lac-Megnatic, Quebec. Approximately 60 missing and 1,000 evacuated. Horrific explosion caught on video. Click on embedded video part way down the page: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/story/2013/07/06/quebec-train-derailment-fire.html And they say pipelines are dangerous! Kind regards,
