Hi there, I’ve been here at Avsim and simming for over 20 years, and after 8 years without upgrades, I’m now ready to buy a new system. Unfortunately I haven’t been keeping up with hardware changes, so please excuse my ignorance. I’m looking to buy a Sim-system only (Prepar3d, FSX, X-Plane), one-Monitor setup, networked to one other client pc (my current old system). I plan to purchase it with a 30% overclock. After reading many posts, below please see my selection towards a hopefully well performing sim-pc. I’d love to hear some feedback on the config further below, and also have some questions: Monitor: What resolution is best for…

I'm considering a rebuild of my current i7 2700K system... New CPU, GPU, memory, motherboard, etc. How much can I change before before the gremlns at Microsoft consider my build a to be a new computer and require me to purchase a new license for Win 10? Are there any Windows Whisperers here who have a workaround? I won't tell anyone. Thanks,.

  3. Hello, hoping for some help. I have Windows 10 HOME addition. My P3DV4 is on my D drive, which is a Samsung EVO 1 TB drive. It also contains several PMDG planes... As I'm beginning to run out of space, I purchased a Samsung 2 TB SSD and would like to completely transfer (clone) all data from my D drive to the new SSD. The Samsung Data migration software will only transfer a hard drive which contains the operating system, which my D drive does not have... How can I clone my D drive to my new 2TB SSD?

Ok, so I had a thread here about some new, very glitzy Gold and Silver ram sticks.... And now the thread is gone. I'm not even sure who to ask why, since no explanation is/was given, and I don't even know which mod to contact. At first, I just wanted to sigh and walk away, but I would really love to know why. The only thing I can conceivably think of is because the first stick of ram shown was gold, I mentioned that even Trump (who likes gold things) would like it in his machine. That can't possibly be a reason for deleting a thread, can it? 🤨

  5. Hi guys, I'm looking to upgrade my PC but I'm very confused about buying the new CPU, I do not know whether to choose between Intel or AMD. I would be Intel oriented. So, my choice would fall on an i7-7700K, but the processor is quite expensive (I imagine it's very high performance), and I would be looking for an AMD equivalent to make comparisons. 1) If I chose AMD which processor would match an i7-7700K? 2) Is it true in your experience that P3D (I refer to 4) is very CPU dependant and prefers Intel CPU? 3) Again, is it worth choosing between 16 or 32GB of ram? (if I chose 16 I could save something) My upgrade would be: Intel i7-7700k MOB…

Hi Avsim, I've done a bit of reading about this issue but can't find a thread that appears relevant to my circumstances or is recent. I've recently reinstalled P3D 4.3 on my new rig (details below). The only addons I'm using at this time are a couple of scenery's and Active Sky for P3D & ASCA. As you can see in these images, I'm getting texture banding (for want of a better word) in the sky. All other textures look amazing, but the sky is pretty poor. It doesn't show that well in these photos because they're compressed but on the screen you can see a lot of individual colours bands in the sky. I've tried changing the sky textures with ASCA to n…

Hi, I would like to upgrade my PC. I do not want a High-End-Computer, but I am planning to use Win10, P3Dv4 with ORBX Global Vector and FSLabs A320 with Airport Sceneries like UK2000. This is my system: Mini-ITX: Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced (minited due to space) Motherboard: GA-B85N Graphic: Zotac GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB Processor: Xeon E3-1230V3 RAM: 8 GB And I do not want to spend more than 200-300€, maybe 400. ;) Do you have any ideas what I should upgrade? Thanks in advance!

Hello, today I got a message that my 3TB hard drive was out of space. I deleted some unneeded files (files used to generate tiles in Ortho4xp) until I got down to 398 GB free but it still didn't make sense to me...just knowing what I had on there I couldn't imagine how it could be full. So I selected all of the directories in the root of the drive in question and they only added up to around 1GB, which makes more sense....so I should have closer to 2 GB left free. Any idea what might be going on? Thanks, Dave

Hi Guys, I don't know much about computers in general, but really want to buy a new laptop for personal use and primarily for flight simming. I don't really play any other PC games, and 1000$ is right around the upper limit of my budget for that purpose. I saw this: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-tuf-gaming-fx705gm-17-3-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060-512gb-solid-state-drive-black/6293624.p?skuId=6293624#tab=buyingOptions?bof=openbox I would appreciate your thoughts and comments as I'm completely green in this technical stuff. Or any other recommendations for that matter.

It seems I've managed to 'FRY' a large percentage of my system!!! After a complete strip down and full clean, it was time to reassemble and power up the system. There was a brief message on the screen (I think it was during, or just after POST), stating there had been "an unexpected power surge". I've never seen a message like that before. The PC then promptly shut down. I thought all was well for a while, as it fired up again, allowed me to change a couple of BIOS settings, and even POSTed. HOWEVER... After 2 days and a night of attempting to install Windows, it seems all is not well:-( It will often make it almost all the way through the Windows instal…

I thought the standard pin 15 & 16 would work for powering up the SATA lines, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to work? Seems to only power peripheral line? My fan controllers use SATA power lines, but they aren't powering on ... any suggestions? Google search is coming up empty and I don't see any conversion cables of PSU SATA out to Peripheral? Cheers, Rob.

Hello. I am trying to experiment with overclocking (never done this before) so I tried to follow steps from ASUS and I cannot enter any value in 1-Core Ratio Limit option. It stays in AUTO and I cannot change it from AUTO to a custom value. I read in ASUS forum that the problem could be enabled Turbo, but I see no option to disable it (if that's the cause at all). On the picture AUTO is changed to a value of 46. For some reason I cannot do that. Another question. Is there a befit of using preset overclocking modes other than custom? Thanks https://rog.asus.com/articles/guides/guide-overclocking-core-i7-6700k-on-the-maximus-viii-extreme/

  18. I'm in the tweaking and installation phases of my new computer build. I bought as advertised Corsair RAM, 32 GB, DDR4 3200 MHz C16 RAM. Through Corsair Link, CPU-Z, and Asus Bios, it was only reporting 1067 MHz RAM speed. I changed the bios to XMP I on my Asus Maximus XI Hero and now it shows up in Corsair Link and CPU-Z as 1600 MHz. Is this correct given the dual channel (2 x 1600 MHz = 3200 MHz), or do I still have some work to do? I am a novice overclocker, so while I have a working knowledge of the bios, I would overlook me committing an error somewhere. I'm particularly curious, as I am getting some stutters in P3Dv4. They slow down after 30-60 seconds, b…

Hi guys, I currently have a 7700K that is overclocked to 4.9 with HT enabled. I see there is some good sales right now for the 9600K 6 core processor. Would there be any noticeable performance gain with this upgrade? I do understand I will have to upgrade my mobo. PC is mainly used for gaming so I don't think I would benefit from HT. Any opinions welcome. Thanks!

The water cooling guru's make it look so easy on their YouTube videos don't they. Respect to them. I don't even have my GPU in the loop yet, just the CPU, but I've already wasted a LOT of hard tube! It's REALLY difficult getting the various tube pieces even remotely the right shape lol. I thought I'd be able to take precise measurements for the various bends. Ha! Although some measuring can be done, it's much more about judging and 'guestimating' to get it right. I can see this is going to be adictive to get right lol...

So I decided to try this whole delidding thing and prepared like a major surgical operation all of the tools I thought I would need: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079HDBYY3 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008O9YIV6 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002UEN1U https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FM58Z42 And set about the project. By the next morning I had reinstalled the cpu and was ready to go! So far I like what I see, with the exception that one single core seems to be running hot: After about an hour of Prime95 I'm getting: Not sure if I should delid it again of if this is pretty ok. Suggestions?

I noticed in the last week or so that my USB Yoke and Throttle quad are not working and a restart is often required to get them to work again. Could this be the result of an unstable overclock that needs a little more voltage? My computer has been running just fine for a month with 8700K overclocked to 4.8 so nothing excessive.

I've read the many opinions on whether or not to defrag SSD's and the predominate one seems to be that you don't need to and it actually may shorten the life. I have used O&O defrag for my storage HDD for quite a while and it seems to be a very good product. They are now advertising their newest addition is suitable for use on SSD's. Just wondering if anyone has tried this, and especially, if it makes any difference with the speed of operation. I certainly don't want to shorten the life of my SSD if it's not going to speed things up. Thanks for your attention. BTW, I'm running Windows & Pro, if that pertains. Regards, Mike
