Hello all, I am in the process of updating my Flightsim computer - currently 2700K 16Gb GTX970. The disk layout is (1st SSD) OS (2nd SSD) P3D and addon scenery (1st HDD 2Tb) Photoscenery files covering all of Western Europe. The new computer will be able to use M.2 so will have NVME for the OS and a partition for P3D The remaining disk layout is the same. With a spare M.2 slot should I get Optane to cache the HDD? My questions are; Will Optane work on a non OS disk - there seems some doubt about whether I can specify Optane to work only on the HDD Will Optane be of use in reading Photoscenery files consisting of thousands of bgl's. Anybody have a handle/c…

I am a little lost. My logitech Extreme 3d pro from 2013 is starting to die on me. It's extremely over sensitive and has issues centering. I love the feel and button placement of the Joystick. Having a button comfortably near my thumb for ap disconnect is awesome, and having two buttons on the top to serve as trim switches is greatly appreciated. I have narrowed my replacement options down: The Saitek X52 Pro, Thrustmaster Warthog, and Honeycomb yoke. I am not at all a fan of the t16000 simply because of the button layout. The Hotas X looks very cheaply built. I have heard that Saitek have horrendous quality control. As for the Honeycomb yoke, despite not being out yet, t…

Hi all I had my first water cooled build about 7 years ago. Water cooling was relatively new then and obviously, it leaked. For those who have more modern water cooled solutions, are you happy with it and would you recommend it? I'm looking at an i7 8770K @4.8 for my next build which comes with a H75 Corsair water cooler. cheers

I'm not planning on any purchases until the new year, but I figured I better start searching for a new laptop now. Currently, I fly FSX and XP11. However, I plan on getting P3Dv4 with my new laptop. So here is my question: I am currently eyeing a Origin NT-17 laptop that will come with two 512GB M.2 SSDs and one 2TB 5400RPM 2.5" Hard Drive... Where should the OS, P3Dv4, and XP11 be installed? I understand that the OS should be on its own individual SSD. I also understand that the flight sims best be on their own individual SSDs as well. Unfortunately, that's three SSDs when I only have two. Should I put the OS and XP11 together on one and P3D on the other? Or sh…

I've seen many topics about the I7-8700k and i think it's a good value proposition. But still I need to justify spending the upgrade cost. It involves buying a new Mobo due to other socket plus RAM. I didn't think this through (upgradeability of the 1150 socket) when I bought my current system (4 years old). So my question is what do I gain by doing this upgrade. Current system: I5-4690K in combination with Gigabyte GTX 1070. upgrade to I7-8700k + same GTX 1070 Current performances are still OK. My heaviest use case would be a PMDG aircraft on approach into FT EHAM with Orbx Netherlands and a lot of clouds to draw resulting in a 16f…

Good evening, I am a complete newbie to the flight sim world and am currently looking at getting my first gaming PC. Would much appreciate some advice on what kind of specs I need to be looking for to be able to run flight sim at a decent standard. I am looking at a budget of about £500-£600. Thank you in advance for your help :)

Hi All, Understand it's speculation at this point however with a possible release date only 7 days away thought I'd throw the link out there and see what the mood from other simmers was? Details seem to point to a Turbo clock of 5GHZ on one of the 8 cores and high 4s on all the others. There are overclocking reports out there of 5.5GHZ being attainable. I expect Rob Ainscough will have a comprehensive review up for us in short order!! I have been putting off a new rig for about 6 months however will be looking to pull the trigger on one of these and the 1180 presuming the rumours are confirmed and we see some concrete details and a possible re…

I am in the process of upgrading my PC, and do not want to lose all of my P3D stuff that is on this computer. Will just moving the hard drive keep it? Or will I have to do something else, such as an external hard drive or SSD?

Anyone in here tried playing around with different disk block sizes to see how performance is affected? Since a while back I'm using XP11 as my main flight sim and this with Ortho4XP photo scenery covering the major part of Europe. I have a dedicated a 10 TB 7200 RPM HDD for the photo scenery which takes up about 6 TB of the drive. One thing I've noticed is how some stuttering occurs when new photo scenery is read as you fly along. For this reason I started thinking that maybe increasing the block size from the standard 4096 bytes to something bigger, maybe even all the way up to 2MB, might increase performance. This based on the fact that the average file …

Hi guys, I am considering buying the Asus ROG STRIX GL12CM with specs: Intel Core i7-8700K 6-Core / 3.7 GHz - 4,7 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB, 16 GB DDR4 2666MHz (8 GB*2), 512GB PCIE M.2 SSD Hyper Drive + 1TB 7200RPM HDD, DVD-RW 8x, AC Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4x USB-A 2.0, 6x USB-A 3.1 Gen1, 2x USB-C 3.1, Windows 10 64-bit And I use FSX:SE with add ons like PMDG, Captain Sim, Aerosoft, Flytampa, Mytraffic, ORBX Global & Vector and so on.. For running P3Dv4 and DCS World. I have an i7-3770K and a GTX 960/4gb I have 2 upgrade thoughts: (1) Upgrade the GPU to something much newer (2) Keep the GPU and upgrade the CPU to an Intel 8400 or even 8600K Which is liable to yield better improvement in simming with these 2 sims? Your thoughts much appreciated, brother simmers!

Hey Everyone, I've been happily simming on P3D for the last 3 years (the last of which on v4) but I have finally come to the point where I've run out of room on my Samsung 950 Pro SSD 512GB. To this point I have used it for Windows and all P3D content and scenery. I plan on ordering the 2080TI as soon as it comes out (trying to resist the urge to get the new 9900k as well, my 6700k @4.6ghz has been doing just fine), so logically it might be a good time to get a new SSD with it. I've been eyeing the Samsung 960 1TB SSDs (or 860 and save a few bucks). But do I really need one? I still have 1.16TB free on my Seagate 2TB SSHD I use for other storage. The other issue is t…

Hello everyone, I updated to i5 8600k and for now it is at default clock (3,60 to 4,30ghz). 1)But, i'd like to know if it's good, when i apply the OC to 4,50ghz). I play the auto-tuning mode on the gigabyte easy tune program (it set the OC to 4,50) and i would like to be sure if the voltage is correct. 2) If i take the clock to 4,70 ghz i need to up or i can continue with default voltage (1.2 volt) ? 3) In the screenshot i see the first clock is saturated.. in the cfg i don't have affinity mask. It better if all the cores aren't saturated ? (Now I will try with 62/63 affinity mask and i will see) Screenshot Thanks in advance

Good day everyone, so lately my motherboard has fried up and a whole what not so I'm upgrading my whole system. I'm gonna leave out my 2 hard drives (one 500gb one 320) since I'll be buying a 128 M.2 and a 1 TB drive for storage. Now i have some important files and documents still stored on my other 2 hard drives. Now here comes the part where I need some help. Me being as cheap as possible and not wanting to buy a whole Hard Disk Enclosure was wondering if somehow i could somehow connect one of the drives to the power supply via a normal SATA power cable and buy a SATA to USB cable/adapter so I can just plug it in to my front I/O. I don't know if there's a more…

Hi, as we all know, SSDs last over time, but when their life comes to an end, a question arises: how can only the operating system be cloned from one ssd to another? Between 2 ssd with sata attack is easy but with 2 ssd nvme / m2 I do not know how to do. Any advice is accepted.

I’m upgrading my computer. It’ll be upgraded to i7-8700k on an Asus ROG motherboard. Memory will be 16Gb DDR4 on 4 sticks, GSkill Ripjaws 5, speed yet undetermined. I really like the Asus overclocking ability. This is for P3D v 4, using a lot of addons. I really need help choosing the motherboard - something appropriate for P3D . That’s the only “gaming” I do though I certainly don’t call it that. It is simulation all the way. Also memory suggestions would be appreciated

Hi everyone! I'm currently in the process of building a new rig and need some hardware advice (I'm a beginner in the field). I just came off an FX-8350 processor and I'm switching over to the Intel lineup. I'm currently debating between the i5-8600K, i7-8700 and i7-8700K, while balancing out a few criteria: -I'm NOT planning to overclock anything, so I'll be using the stock clock speeds -I'd like to minimize the need for any intense cooling systems on my machine and keep heat output to a minimum in general (I already have 2 fans from my previous machine that I'd like to use, and ideally I'd want to keep it at just those unless I absolutel…
