Help Using the AVSIM Forums

I have noticed that sometimes I get a green progress bar when either starting a thread or replying to one, and then the post goes up ok. Other times, like today, there is no progress bar, and after waiting a few minutes I get a 'service not available' message, and it appears to have failed to post. In actuality the post did go up but if you hit the back button to go to that forum you don't see it, so one assumes its not there and some post again. If you actually leave that forum and come back, then it shows up, and I am sure those posting duplicates arent aware of this, so just thought I would pass this along

It says: "We are 128,789 members strong, and we have posted 2,500,072 messages regardng our hobby - the largest knowledge repository in flight simulation!" You might want to add that missing 'i'. ^_^

Afternoon, a topic of mine which i posted yesterday evening (15 hours ago) had no views when i checked an hour ago. I posted a reply to the thread and the views instantly jumped to 54. within minutes i had a reply but have had nothing since and my views still only increase after i have posted a reply? why is this? I remember back when a brief description of a topics content would popup when you moused over a topics title, now the same title pops up instead of any clue to the content. Isn't this a bit redundent and could it possibly be contributing to the slowdown of the pages loading?

Hi and happy holidays, guys! Recently I've had big problems loading Avsim pages. I often get "504 service unavailable", especially during the evening (CET). I live in Norway, Europe. I've read on the norwegian flightsim webpage that there are several others who also experience this problem. Is there anything we can do, and are Avsim staff aware of this? For some odd reason, whenever I select the "QUOTE" button to reply to a specific post... it never places the quoted post in my reply. In fact, the button doesn't really do anything at all any more. Is this because I'm using IE 11? Or... ??

As you can see, I've changed my member title to "Cookies!", because I like cookies. I've never seen anyone else change this, which raised the question in my mind as to whether we're actually allowed to change this?

Does anyone know if the new website/forum will have darker themes to choose from. I've got old tired eyes that have trouble reading forums with these bright backgrounds. For example this forum is like staring directly into Landing Lights. (I'm wondering how long it takes before some moron replies back saying "Turn the brightness of your monitor down) Plus it would be nice to have like a darker blue color with clouds in the background. I use Simple Machines for my forum, and there are about a dozen forum themes that would fit the aircraft theme.Thanks,TuddsI'm afraid reading these forums for more than 10 minutes will make me go blind :(

We had to suspend a member tonight for copying and pasting a message from another forum, IN ITS ENTIRETY, and posting it on AVSIM. That is a violation of copyright. Just an FYI.. The double posting isn't totally from impatient people clicking submit again.. I just finally had a situation happen to me where I caused a double post (thread) Hit submit.. Just sits there then It seems the post still made it to the database, just hitting reload will then cause the double post. The site has been generating this error a lot lately..

Lately I always (and I mean ALWAYS) get the 503 Service Unavailable message after starting a new topic. I also notice that if I open another window in my browser and go to the forum in which I posted something, the topic is there. It seems to me the forum software somehow fails to show you the topic you just started even when it has been posted perfectly fine. I suppose this also is the reason why there are so many double posts: people think something has gone wrong with the posting but instead only something has gone wrong with SHOWING you the post after posting it. So my advice for everyone who has problems with double posts is to FIRST check the relevant forum …

I'm in the UK and ever since the forums were taken down a few days ago for planned maintenance I've noticed a marked increase in connection time. I'm even getting 503 messages at random times of the day, not only around 0900 and 1000 UTC. Has anyone else noticed this? Pingdom just now shows DNS 102 ms Connect 137 ms Send 0 ms Wait 9.44 s Receive 145 ms Total 9.83 s It also reports it's slower than 90% of all tested websites

I haven't been back here for a while but I recently posted a question and I noticed a little lock next to my questions. Does this mean no one is able to look at and respond to my question? How do I get the lock removed? Thanks ksan1

I've probably deselected something in error but I can no longer see the lists of recent posts and of posts I've participated in on the opening page. Also, when writing this post the formatting tool bar (bold italic etc) is no longer there: neither is the selective quote button.

When I go into a forum now, all thread topics are shown in light font whereas before only those read were in light font and those with unread posts were in bold font. Is there a setting I am missing? Regards,

Now that I've made that clear, let me also say that I have been posting in this forum for a few years now, although I have to admit that it's pretty rare for me to post here, because whenever I check back for replies to the questions I've asked, I can't ever seem to find the original post thread. Hi Lately I have not been able to place links in posts on the AVSIM forums. I usually just copy the website link from the address bar and paste it into my posts. When I go to start a new post or reply to one, the copied website link does not want to paste into my post?? I am running Win8.1 on my Surface Pro tablet.

using chrome browser. sometimes it saves my login, sometimes i have to login again. whenever i do, the browser asks if i want to save the password, and i click yes. is there some other setting in the browser that is requiring me to re-login on occasion?

Just hit a new problem that just started this afternoon. When I enter the forums now intermittently all threads, comments, etc, will appear Bold, other times they will appear normal with just the unread threads Bolded. The browser I use is Firefox. Hi, last few days I haven't been able to copy and paste plain text into my posts.. eg if I want to copy and paste a bit of the cfg file. Never had this problem before. Browsing through the forums today, something which has been creeping up on me finally seemed to cross the line enough for me to mention it... While the intent is certainly understood, the implementation of the topic tags, flags, and badges seems to be cluttering up the once clean and easy to read topic lists within some forums. Granted, not all forums are encumbered by lots and lots of pinned or flagged posts, but when they are the forum seems to be lit up like a Christmas Tree. I'm but a single voice out here in a cast of tens of thousands, but it would be great if these topic flags could somehow be adjusted or subdued a bit. I like it when the topic subjec…

Hi, I do not mean to push any buttons, as I respect Tom's decision to abort this feature entirely, but I kind of liked the old reputation system as it was before the down vote button was introduced. Is there any chance the previous iteration of the reputation system with the "thumbs up" votes only be reinstated? I like having that ability to thank a person for a helpful or thoughtful post, and this was a great way to acknowledge posts the user feels are particularly noteworthy. I don't see how the old system can be gamed or abused, and I don't think anyone really wants to see these forums turned into Reddit or Quora where there is a competition to get the most vote…

Hi I find myself no longer able to quote someone in the forums. I notice the 'quote' function has been replaced with 'selective quote', it tells me to select something, I highlight what I would like to quote, click 'selective quote' and nothing happens. Clearly I am doing something incorrectly. Could someone please tell me how to quote? Thanks.

I am trying to find where I enable and disable forums from showing up after clicking the new content list. Any ideas?
