Hi,Could anyone please tell me what happens when you tune to UNICOM.I know it's used if there is no ATC available, but I'm just curious what else happens on the freq. Does ATC contact you once you fly into a zone that's manned ... ?Regards,Wac :-wave

Hi,On my quest to better understand the intricate details of on line simming, I now have a question regarding controlled and inactive sectors. For the time being I am using Vatsim's applet to determine where there is ATC (Whazzup also locked up on me and Servinfo is not that easy to figure out). While I am writting this there are 182 pilots and 70 ATC on line. However in the american continent all I can see is one extensive green sector in Argentina that goes all the way down to the south pole and no one is flying in it :-eek ,and another green sector up in the Boston-Eastern Canada area. I estimate that less than 20% of the pilots online are actually within the green sec…

Hi,When parked at a gate at Amsterdam Schiphol airport (EHAM) I get very big negative numbers in my SquawkBox TCAS screen. Other aircraft, as well the ones on the ground, as the ones in the air, are all at relative heights like -140911000... As soon as I am in the air, the numbers go back to normal values. I have not experienced this at other airports. I guess it might be caused by the fact that Schiphol airport (EHAM) is below sea level? Is that true and is there a solution for this artefact?I am using the Lago EHAM2002 scenery. Another strange thing is that I see other planes but I am not visible myself. This problem also disappears at other airports. Any ideas?.Regar…

Thanks to all who participated in CalScreamn6 today.I flew two flights. One from Portland to Burbank in a DC9-34 and another from KLAX to KSFO. Had a lot of fun! However, a couple of interesting things happened. As ASA422 "Alaska 422", my flight was uneventful until I got turned over to So_Cal App. Just as I was about to contact them, FS2002 fualted out (gdi.dll or something like that). So I had to reboot my PC and restart my flight in approximately the same position as I was before FS2002 went out on me. A little discouraged, but got it goin again and made a visual approach to RWY 15. Let me say it was real nice to see a lot of traffic along the way and the ATC cov…

I'll try to fly as realistic as possible. There's many controllers who don't know or even care about the route information of aircraft going through their airspace. Especially, almost everyone doesn't know what means "AAL/N0455F320" in my plan. If I ask a step, I'll get some arguing answer that denies the possibility of steps in VATSIM. This is not a problem with students only, I've argued even with a supervisor for my opinion. What's the policy of VATSIM headquarters for this?Regards, Matti Kemppainen (811424).

When beginning a decent do you need to ask permission or advise the controller ? I generally just decend because I am under my own navigation, however, I am never really sure if this is the correct way to do it. At the CALSCREAM 6 event on Sunday, I was decending into Vancouver which was not very busy but what if I was decending into LAX ? Any advise appreciated.Mark.

I have enjoyed FS for many years. I also have a student ticket, flying out of Tulsa, OK KRVS (Jones Riverside)I recently had my first online flying experience, using RW and SB. Was an enjoyable experience. Have a couple of questions.Filed from KDFW to KTUL (737). Contacted Fort Worth controller via voice (RW). After clearance, takeoff and some vectoring I was cleared out of the Dallas area and advised to "resume own navigation". I believe that in real life I would be handed-off to KC center. If a controller is available, what is the process of contacting KC center? Is this a "seamless" process? Does KC Center already have my flight plan? Do they also act as the controller…

Could you guys from ZLA post on your web site maybe which center controller to contact when entering your airspace. I know you all break it up such as LAX_A_CTR, LAX_B_CTR, etc... During event CalScream5, I had no idea which CTR to call coming in from the northeast (SLC which was not manned). Thanks.Eric

Try these out for some scenery that can't be beat. This may be a long haul, but can be made manageable by requesting "mulitple-x" at cruise altitude. All the r…

Here we go again. Another upstart onlice service. What in the world could they possibly offer that VATSIM does not already provide? Other than diluting the FS online community even more, nothing. A big waste of time in my opinion. If we just had 1 orginization instead of now 3, there would be alot more pilots and controllers online and the experience by all would be that much more realistic. It's ridiculous having another orginization try to get into an already very slim market. Just my opinion.

"New addon: Voice ATIS" The online flightsim community has always tried to make their virtual environment as real as it gets. We all know software like SquawkBox, ProController, Roger Wilco, PIC767, Dreamfleet 2000, FSNavigator and many other add-ons that make the simulation more real. But one thing has been missing: To listen to an ATIS-message.The past six months there has been developed a system that gives the flightsim community voice ATIS. This system gives the controller the possibility to construct and broadcast his ATIS message, and for pilots to listen to it.Read more about it on the http://www.voiceatis.com/.Thomas TesloDeveloperI just thought this should be …

With the coming release of ASRC is there now a standard format for filing a FP in SB?From the ngs I know at present there are differences between the USA and at least UK FPs. As a newly appointed Training Captain for my VA I want to get the 'newbies' used to filing a correct FP.At the moment I would file something likePOL1R B4 MARGO TWEED1AFor a flight between EGCC & EGPH and for a flight EGCC - EGPKPOL1R B4 TLA DCT TRN(BTW Don't pull me up on an incorrect POL SID number, I didn't check what designators POL has :-) )I would not include the departure/arrival airports in the FP as these are already in their respective boxes.I also know that ASRC prefers V, T, or R in th…

When flying online with VATSIM, how can you tell if you are in the sector covered by the Controller_CTR that appears in range ?? The other night I was flying in to KPHL and contacted DC_CTR only to find out that KPHL is covered by New York. The reason this confused me is that WAZZUP showed KPHL falling into the DC sector. Any help and advise is appreciated.Mark.

Is it easy to set up and fly online with ATC using Roger Wilco?I've thought about it for a couple of years, but have never tried. I have a couple of questions?1. Do I use Vatsim servers to fly online.2. Do I have to be part of a virtual airline?3. Do I have to use squakbox? Does it support voice.4. Can I still use my Eddie Denny terrain mesh(U.S.)?I fly flight plans at home using a 737 at home. I have the 3d glasses, vibrating chair, ir tracker, 4 monitors, Radar contact etc., but I want it more real. I was thinking real atc online, but I'm not sure what all is involved.

Good day to everyone.Well, it has been several months indeed since I have been able and had time to look at flying around the continent with Flight Simulator. I returned to the VATSIM scene after an upgrade to FS2002, but am a little confused at what I have found.First, I installed FS2002, and got that working to my satisfaction. Then I downloaded Squawkbox, and this is where my annoyance begins. It would seem, if I understand the situation correctly, that it is necessary to launch the SB Host program, which then docks the SB window inside itself. SB then connects to the multiplyaer session, and sends incoming messages to the regular FS chat window. There are a few p…

It is extremely difficult to obtain a password to the VATUSA network. Or am I the only one having that problem? VATUSA is the only place where a person can take the controller exams and if you cannot get a password you are not allowed in.E-mail to VATUSA and VATSIM personnel for help in obtaining a password remains unanswered.I enjoy VATSIM and also enjoy flying on-line. Perhaps they do not need any more controllers. There was an article on changing the control system. If controllers are not needed at this time could they post a notice to that effect on the home page.If someone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Many of you have probably seem FSFlightMax. In fact, there's a news article on AVSIM's front page right now (scroll down a bit). Anyway, to those who don't know, it has weather radar that actually works with the weather in FS2K2.Some of you probably know about FSMeteo. This is a GREAT weather program that uses METARs similar to the VATSIM weather. However, FSMeteo has winds aloft and some other nice features.FSFlightMax can actually work with weather downloaded for FSMeteo. And rumor has it, the next version of FSMeteo (v6.0, due anyday) will allow FSFlightMax to work with FSMeteo when ONLINE, like when flying on VATSIM. So, for those of us lucky enough to have both…

Ok this may be a little O/T but hopefully someone will be able to help.I fly on line using 2 PCs with widefs and fsuipc and have no problem; the FS PC does not have an internet connection that is done on the 2nd PC.The VA I fly for is considering running FS MP sessions, not joining VATSIM, on a private server for new pilots to learn the ropes. My question is, can I connect to a FS MP session via my 2nd PC without running SB?TIA
