Is it my imagination or are the number of pilots flying on Vatsim way down lately ? I know summer has something to do with it but I think that Ultimate Traffic has taken many people away from Vatsim....at least for now.Mark.

The summer is getting hot, the last asparagus need to be shipped, and the first strawberries are showing up. A lot of good reasons to visit the Frankfurt region these times. And now we add one more: The Frankfurt EDFF FIR "Hot Summer" Regional FlyIn, starting friday, june 20th at 1800Z.We made great efforts to staff a bunch of interesting airports in our FIR for this evening, from small VFR fields near Frankfurt to the main airport itself. Not less than 6 field will be fully ready to await your flight, and 15 eager SAG controllers are ready to show off their skills to you at Mannheim, Mainz, Nuernberg, Stuttgart, Hahn und Frankfurt. Here is the complete list of positions …

I have recently changed OS from Win98SE to Win2k and now each time I connect to Vatsim FS crashes with the familiar 'FS has encountered an error and we would like to send the report to MS'The system is a 2 PC setup, both PCs running Win2kPro and 'talking via Widefs', I also have ICS installed so I can run 'private' MP sessions.Usual 2 PC setup.PC1 (server) with no direct internet connection runs FS, PC2 (client),with direct internet connection ,runs SB, RW, FS Meteo, etc.I also run ZoneAlarm firewall, but this was running under Win98SE as well without any problems.Originally I could not see other players but think I have cured that now by setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM…

Posted on behalf of Richard Jenkins, VP Membership, VATSIM BOGHello All,I imagine some of you are wondering why VATSIM needed to change all 55,000 passwords last week. Without getting into all the details and flooding you with technical information, I will try and give you the basic events.First, I would like to thank all the membership staff for putting in some very long hours and handling a very large amount of email. These people have all come through for the members and we owe them a big thank you.Membership Staff:Ed HemsleyJohn BinnerRobin WalkerBill PappertEddy ChenBlayne MurphyPiotr NowickiLluis Del CerroWhat Happened? On June 2nd we discovered that break-ins had oc…

This post isn't related to a problem per se as it is a question to those more knowledable than myself. Why is it that when searching for MP sessions on two of my PC's it will automatically detect it and on the other 2 PC's it requires me to enter the localhost IP of 127.0.0.1. Can anyone tell me if there is a setting somewhere that I can change to allow them to also automatically find the MP session.Regards,Nick Anzelino

I had to upgrade to a new PC recently & so had XP installed. A search of this forum suggests there is a problem with the XP firewall having to be disabled to allow other aircraft to see you. This is the problem I have, & so want to disable the firewall. Problem is, I can't find where to do that! Please advise if someone knows excatly where & how to disable it.ThanksPeter

HelloYes, I know that Follow Me's are forbidden on the VATSIM network ( :-( ). But is it possible to become the okay to provide follow me services at Events?

Well! my second VatSim flight ended in disaster. In order to make everything as smooth as possible with minimum complexity, I switched from the DF737 to a Boeing Factory 717 with my favorite freeware panel, and extra good frame rates. Unfortunately the autoland feature of the DF737 had spoiled me, and I forgot to disengage the AP on the 717 before touchdown, and wiped out all the approach lights at the end of RW26R in Atlanta. My apologies to Stephanie, the patient Atlanta Ctr. controller who was entertained by all of this I am sure. Tucked my tail between my legs and closed out my flight plan after ending up somewhere in downtown Atlanta. Now that I have entertained you w…

In VatSim flight planning, is there any SIMPLE way to find out what the active runways are for takeoff from the departure airport, and landing at the destination airport at the time of planning origination? (I realize this is subject to change, particularly at the destination). Thanks:RTH

On VatSim, must all IFR flights be filed from and to sites which are currently listed as having active controllers (i.e. ServInfo)?Assuming that it is possible, what is the proper procedure for communication for IFR flights when nothing is available under the ATC directory except Unicom? In the real world, the flight could be filed on the ground and initiated in the air as ctr's are always manned, but in VatSim, when, and to whom if there is no DEL, GND, TWR, DEP; APP, OR CTR within reach, only Unicom?By the same token, if the destination communication sources log off before I am within reach of their region, what is the proper procedure for completing the flight? I have b…

Hello all, following is a NOTAM issued by Richard Jenkins which I quote in full length from the VATSIM newsgroup:----snip----Hello All,As many of you have noticed, the VATSIM website has been down for most ofthe day. We are still experiencing technical problems with the server onwhich it is located. As a result of these technical problems, it has become necessary for VATSIMto regenerate all passwords for its members. This will take place over thenext 24 - 48 hours. You will be able to obtain your new password from theVATSIM website by using the lost password function at this link:http://cert.vatsim.net/vatsimnet/statcheck.htmlThe link currently does not work and will not wo…

I downloaded one by Dan Hill (thank you for your hard work sir) but find it is not really "user" friendly when it comes to following alongwhen trying to learn to fly online with SB.

Sorry if this has been covered before but I didn't find anything about it.For several weeks now I've had strange problems logging on to Vatsim. If I try logging on to my usual servers in Europe or even the US, I get kind of logged in... That is I get one green line with a short text (unfortunately I forgot what it says now but I thinks it's only one word - flightsimnetwork?). The connect command is then greyed out and I can log out but nothing else happens. I don't get any usual welcome text and the atc directory only list unicom. However, if I connect using a certain Asian server that is also is the list of servers, I get normally logged in.Of course I can continue loggi…

Hi,I am glad to announce the release of LLBG (Tel-Aviv Ben Gurion) scenery, public beta version. See the readme file for more details, and what will be added in the near future! This scenery is one of the gems made under VATIL scenery project, directed by Mr. Moshe Chetrit (VATIL7) who is also the developer of this one along with Mr. Chanan Epstein. You can download this scenery and other sceneries and stuff at our website, http://simdata.sourceforge.net/vatsim-israel . This scenery was designed specifically for online flights, with default scenery runways compatibility and minimum framerates impact.I would recommend using this scenery at Sunday's event, read it here http:/…

I have been a Vatsim member and on-line pilot now for about 3 months and I feel on-line flying is one of the greatest additions to come along in years!! The only pet peeve I have is regarding the lack of voice controllers... Before everyone attacks that statement, I do understand that Roger Wilco is at best a flakey system to deal with (on a good day) and some pilots prefer text (fear of public speaking??). But I have to say that there is nothing more annoying than being 5 miles out on an ILS approach, getting handed off to the Tower by Approach and having to:1. Pause FS20022. Type into a chatbox3. Unpause FS2002My suggestion is that all "critical" controller position…

Well, come July 29 for those of us going to FS2004, what are the chances of the current Squawkbox build being able to be used with FS2004. I predict the chances are zero as they had to patch it to get it to work with FS2002. With SB3 on the horizon (distant?), I am doubting that they will again patch the current build to make it work with FS2004 instead just waiting till Joel finishes up SB3. With that in mind I think online flying on VATSIM is sadly going to go way down on the pilot side which is unfortunate for those of us (like me) that fly strictly on VATSIM. Going to be a choice of staying with FS2002 for online flying or upgrading for the enhancements of FS2004. Any…

The topic got your attention? I hope it did!I'm so frustrated at VatEUD at the moment. Its a farce! They implement a procedure for upgrading which is both stupidly over-complex and it doesnt work.Dont know what I'm talking about? 2 exams are required for EACH upgrade, yes thats right-two. One is with VatEUD and then the other with your own ARTCC. My first Question-Why? One exam would surely suffice!Sorry, let me first go through the whole Procedure for upgrading your controller status...for anyone lucky enough to not be restricted to VATEUD's regulations and procedures:1) Apply for the test on the VATEUD website.2) Recieve a test straight away, you answer the multiple choice…

Tonight I was flying STL-DEN to position myself for tomorrow's Ozark Virtual Fly In. I departed KSTL normally and Mark Brummet was the controller on duty. No problems with departure. Mark did his usual great job. My problems came when I switched to ZDEN.The controller was supposedly on voice (DEN_V_CTR) but never answered up. I attempted to contact him by typing and just as I did, the network must have frozen up. I was tracking the HYS VOR and couldn't disconnect the VOR track because of the freeze. So there I was doing 360s around the HYS VOR at a 90 degree bank angle. Then the +/- 6,000 fpm fun began. I actually got out of that and it settled in at FL350 and he…

I'm about to try the VATSIM network, having never tried it before. Is there a "test" area where new rookies can go talk to controllers and others, without making a big mistake and causing other serious sim pilots and controllers a lot of grief? Thanks. I talk to ATC in real life every other weekend when I fly, so I feel a little strange being "intimidated" by doing so in the virtual world :)Bruce.
