I just stumbled upon this video demoing Microsoft's IllumiRoom concept. I suppose the intended application is mainly for game consoles, but this sure would be cool to have for flight simming as well. Just think of the possibility to have shadows projected into a home cockpit, or just simply enhancing the space around you monitor with a round view of the cockpit. I sure would love to have one of those to play around with!

For work, I have a Lenovo W520, a wide screen laptop. When traveling it becomes a luggable, if you remember those, especially with the power supply that is the size of a brick and near the weight of one too. When I went to Hawaii last year, it barely fit in the safe, I had to put it in on an angle with a roll of tape underneath one side. My next trip to London is coming up next month. I am considering getting something lighter, but it must be able to use Cisco VPN and Windows Remote Desk Top to servers. Once I get on a server, I can use the necessary applications like SQL Server to SSH to fix whatever. Yes, it'd be nice to run SQL Server Management Studio locall…

$50,000 grand is the starting minimum bid for the former Air Force One. I wonder how many flying hours she has? http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57583908/your-own-air-force-one-for-as-little-as-$50k/

  6. Today will be my first trip ever since I got my iPad and I was wondering what are good apps for me to use to monitor my flight. What you guys recommend? I'm guessing apps that will sort of allow me to track my flight and display cool GPS related info in real time, etc. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

a few weeks ago a young girl in my city died (electrocuted and dismembered) because she fell in-between 2 subway cars instead of walking inside the car, her head and eyes were focused on her iphone    MONTREAL - Dozens of friends of Audrey-Anne Dumont, the 20-year-old woman who died after falling on the metro tracks at the Monk station on the morning of April 19, assembled Friday outside the station to honour her memory. The coroner is investigating claims that the young woman fell onto the tracks between two metro cars because she was distracted by her cell phone. The woman’s body was dragged through the tunnel and recovered at the Verdun…

Here’s an incoming message from Aviation Herald about an Lufthansa Airbus A321 with an engine surge. Lucky that this isn’t simulated in “Peter’s Aircraft A321″ or is it? A Lufthansa Airbus A321-200, registration D-AISL performing flight LH-851 from Helsinki (Finland) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany) with 162 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out of Helsinki’s runway 22R when the left hand engine (V2533) emitted a number of bangs accompanied by streaks of flame (usually indicative of engine compressor stalls or engine surges). The crew reduced the engine to idle thrust, levelled off at 2500 feet and returned to Helsinki’s runway 15 for a safe landing about 15 minutes after d…

  9. I'm having a really bad experience and need to remove files from my SSd Drive before an os reinstall. I'm trying to find emails with passwords and keys and receipts and about 407 different ways from Tuesday regarding info required to reactivate my payware. Ok, maybe I need to attend to this area. Has any really nice person written any software that can organize all this stuff? I've got all this info spread across 6 drives. Jon

  10. Through the gracious offer from Marty Arant, consultant to Laminar Research, we can now provide an audio of Rob's Key Note address on Saturday evening at the Awards Banquet of the 2013 FANCON. In his Key Note, Rob addresses the future of flight simulation and the passion that he sees in our community and the need for that passion in the future. This is a zipped MP3 file and it is just over 12 megs in size. You can find it here. This post has been promoted to an article

Hi folks, one of my all time favorite pastimes and I'm sure one most of us enjoy, is plane spotting I don't even need to go to the airport, I often enjoy just watching the traffic pass overhead, with or without binoculars, but most of the time without, and try to determine the aircraft type and airline. I especially love seeing the rare birds, such as international carriers not served by my local airport, KPHL, passing overhead on their way to destination. Looking back about 20 years ago or so, the internet was not around, so it was a challenge sometimes to figure out what is what. But thanks to Flightaware, with it's live map (or close to live, I think there is…

I took some pictures while at FANCON 2013 last week and wanted to share them with the community. I apologize for some of the grainy effects but still learning the camera feature in my Galaxy III. I've just gotten to the "point" then "shoot" section of the manual. I resized them and cropped out my thumb which somehow got in the way. [Link Removed - Pictures now posted in FANCON 2013 Gallery] Best regards, Jim

  16. We have upgraded our "bread crumb" system to give it more visibility and an intuitive format. What is a bread crumb? A bread crumb is just like the "bread crumb" you place in the forest which will get you back to your origin if you momentarily get lost. The bread crumbs here are at the top of the main pages and they too make it easy for you to navigate within the system. Here is the new bread crumb display:

I was thinking about the current workings of fly by wire, and it's my understanding that they still rely on hydraulic actuation to move the control surfaces, but simply replace the metal wire cable linked with an electronic cable that commands the hydraulic actuators instead. With this system i assume a loss of hydraulics in one hydraulic system would mean the backup hydraulics would have to be used, reducing the amount of equipment that can be used? A wet hydraulic system is also heavy. Now this is a total shot in the dark, but it seems to me a system based on electro mechanical actuators would be simpler, more reliable and easier to add redundancy into, and ligh…

You know you're a sim-addict when... ....You 'fly' more hours in a given day than you'd be allowed to as a RW commercial pilot.. ...Your automobile closes in on traffic congestion and you instinctively pull back on the wheel.... ....Your automobile goes over the speed limit/down a steep incline/approaches a parking lot and you are concerned your GPS doesnt shout "OVERSPEED!/PULL UP" or emit a continuous BEEP... ....You are mowing the lawn and come across a thick section of grass or a large mound and ins…

Looks like all the complaints about Windows 8 have caused Microsoft to take notice. I personally have only seen Windows 8 once in a hotel business center that had two computers. After stumbling around for about 30 seconds, I quickly switched to the other machine which had Windows 7. Not sure if the overhaul will make it more friendly for FSX users, but it's nice to know some action is being taken. Bring back that damn START button lol. http://news.yahoo.com/microsoft-touching-windows-8-address-gripes-044749525.html

I flew back from Wichita late yesterday afternoon, and boy are my arms tired! Both coming and going I could tell when we were over Kansas, because the Governor's too cheap to fix all the air holes in the state's airspace... ...which is my humorous way to say the ride was bUmpY... Despite the really crappy weather (cold, drizzly, overcast) and so all of the anticipated flyover's had to be cancelled, I had a great time! I got to spend some time in the cockpit of the museum's ex-Southwest 737-200 while I was there, and was privileged to have one of the pilots who flew those aircraft accompany me in the right seat and fill my ears with anecdotes. David is …

  24. Video shows a small sample of the sharp and quick thinking requirements that are expected of modern commercial airline pilots. These are the great minds that can stay ahead of their massive heavy metal behemoths that fly at neck breaking speeds, carrying enough people to populate a small town, all trusting their lives to their skill and training.
