Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. A UK based Call Centre recognized it's employees didn't like working the nightshift, so instead they offered to send employees to New Zealand to work the day shift there when it is night time in the UK. They are offered a one year contract to work in New Zealand on a 4 day on, 4 day off work schedule that will allow them to travel during the time off. What a great way to see the world instead of what would otherwise be a dull job working the Night Shift in the UK...Call Centre is a hard job so I thought this was great incentive. http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/world/8628172/UK-call-centre-sends-staff-downunder

  4. In my infinite wisdom, I somehow managed to record the first part of FanCon via the stream interface, but after improving equipment issues, the recording stopped for the remaining chunk (Rob Randazzo speech, awards, etc). If anyone has this recorded or saved, please advise. This post has been promoted to an article

  5. AVSIM announced at the Saturday Awards Banquet that our Board of Directors have agreed to provide a donation to both the Kansas Aviation Museum of $2,000.00 and a $1,000.00 donation to the Cockpit-Fest USA organization. Throughout its existence, AVSIM has donated thousands of dollars to museums and deserving organizations around the world, including sponsoring scholarships at Embry-Riddle Aeronautic University. We are proud to continue that tradition with our donations announced last night to KAM and the Cockpit-Fest organization. We are confident that both organizations can put the donations to use to further our common interest in aviation. This post has been promote…

Not normally an obvious post for this forum, but the airplane joke in the middle almost made me choke on my potato chips. ^_^ (Hey, what can I say? I like Monty Python as well. I have a weird sense of Humor)

Team, What are the respective take-off (v2) and landing speeds (vref) for the various plane models? I take it that at this point of the development all weights of the planes remain constant (no fuel consumption), BuZ

  9. I believed I screwed the pooch last time I installed FSX on its own partition on a separate hdd. It wasn't so much FSX not being able to find itself but installing payware got confused. So, when FSX asks me where I want to install it, do I put that installation in a folder on the other drive or just point it at the drive and let it go? I'm thinking the folder structure might have been a bit too deep last time. Jon

  11. I stopped simming about two years ago when I was working so much. Now that I have a lot more time off and we go into a lot of unfamiliar airports for work I would like to start simming my flights again. I always found FSX to be the best in terms of realistic flight modeling but engine modeling was far from accurate. X-plane was reverse but I would rather have realistic flight models because that is the most important part of the sim for me. I have not really looked into Prepar3d but does this fix the issues with engine modeling. Do all FSX mods and aircraft work for P3D?

  12. Folks, I'm the first AVSIM staffer here! How many are here already? The front desk said she had a boat load of people check in with more to come yet! For our members who can't make it here, we are going to try and get a live feed going. Still waiting on some staff and equipment to get here. I may try testing my ipad or iPhone as a live camera, but the quality will surely be sub par (which I want to avoid)

One of the most exciting projects we are working on is Global Air Traffic Control. This is a stand-alone product that puts the user in the seat of a TRACON or Tower controller. You can control over 6000 airports worldwide with all the procedures exactly as they are because we use an updatable(!) database with real time weather. There are also databases with aircraft and airport specifics so the aircraft accelerate and turn like the real aircraft and the right runways are used. You can even control the airport in multiplayer. Check out this video of a late alpha version.

We are testing a live streaming set up. We need to have as many people as possible log on and watch the test stream immediately. We will run this test for the next 15 or 20 minutes. Please go to this URL and view the rather boring feed for five to ten minutes for us. We are testing the load: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/avsimfancon?utm_campaign=ustre-am&utm_source=14255111&utm_medium=social Thanks for helping.

  15. Fox News has pix up of the crash site of a USAF KC-135 tanker that went down today in Kyrgyzstan. From pix of the tail wreckage it's clear that the plane was based at McConnell AFB, in Wichita. The AVSIM FANCON is just getting started at a museum which actually sits on McConnell property. FNC says eyewitnesses report the aircraft broke up in midair and came down in pieces. Hopefully this isn't the overheating fuel pump issue rearing its ugly head again. The media, in their usual clueless way, is talking about the crew possibly ejecting. Last time I checked tankers don't come with ejection seats. Sad news...

I have just come from reading the Forum Alert regarding false identities on Avsim. I'm wondering if people, like myself could invite Avsim to check their identities and add that ' Status' to our Avatar/Visible Info once logged in. Would other genuine members' of this Community, support this recommendation? It would at least let other people know that I am who I say I am and it gives me a 'heads-up' that I might be talking to god knows who. Jon

  18. Finally a case of government going in a positive direction toward general aviation. Recent legislation, fueled so to speak by an intense AOPA lobbying effort, was passed in Indiana almost eliminating the excise tax on avgas, and removing the state sales tax from parts used in aircraft repairs and maintenance. The previous sales tax on repair and maintenance parts had cost Indiana aviation services providers dearly, as it became much less expensive to fly or otherwise transport aircraft to neighboring states for repairs. Yesterday I downloaded and installed the latest version of DCS World - 1.2.4, which is the first to support only 64 bit OSs, and their SUPERB Bel UH-1H!!! Today LM Prepar3d releases the 1st 64 bit update for their SDK!!!! Check the news at the AVSIM Unofficial P3D forum :-) And also Carenado is starting to update their X-Plane10 add-ons to be 64-bit compatible!!! So, with DCS leading (the 1st to go 64 bit from the start), followed by X-Plane10, and eventually LM Prepar3d v2.0, 64-bit is definitely going to be the future :-)

Hello Simmers! I was just wondering about the Canadian route network of Alaska Airlines (AS). A while ago they had many routes from Vancouver (PSP, LAS as far as I know, etc..), however they withdrew these routes a few years ago. At the time they were operated by the MD-83s, until those left the fleet. I was, and still am a little curious as to why they did this, and I am wondering if they ever plan to reinstate more (or the same) Canadian routes, specifically to Vancouver. Many passengers connecting through Seattle are travelling Vancouver to Palm Springs and other SoCal areas, and right now these are pretty much AC/WJ dominated. If not through Vancouver, they …

@, Several months ago there was an incident where you were suspended. As a result of the suspension, I became curious if your identity was true. This is not to say everyone here is sharing their real identity, as that wouldn't be a realistic assumption. Rather, I choose to scrutinize those who become a very serious problem for the enjoyment and development of AVSIM and flight simulation. The short of the long is this... We know your real identity as a male chiropractor from the Midwest. We ask you stop playing mind games with our users and staff, and stop hampering others enjoyment of this community. Your aliases have been banned and flagged as your identiti…

Greetings, Was planning a trip to Key West Florida (FS9). I have to say after all my years of simming I've never flown there, so I did some research on the Web to get some info about the airport. The runway is 4,801 ft, but Southwest Airlines have 737-700 flying in/taking off from that airport. I've done some research on the specs of the aircraft, and found that the basic takeoff length is 5,249 ft...400+ ft longer than the runway at Key West. My question being...is this correct??? If so, if the basic take off length is longer that the runway isn't this against FAA rules, or am I missing something about takeoff length of an aircraft??? In the real world if I did take …
