Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

I hope everyone is ok and with no major consequences! But all jokes aside, what they don't know is that in reality, that is Tom's house and he's decided to build a home cockpit in his attic. http://www.wric.com/story/22467143/plane-crashes-into-henrdon-apartment-complex

All safe, and major disruption to London airspace with aircraft diverting left right and center. 27L is closed, 27R only operating runway.... Regards, Ró.

I read this in our local newspaper. This pilot had good eyes and took every bit of the training pilots receive into account: http://www.azcentral.com/news/free/20130530pilot-unhurt-after-plane-lands-nc-school-field.html Regards, John

  7. We successfully updated all modules of the forum system earlier today, completing the process at 1700 EST. I ask that you keep your eyes open for things that appear to be broken. If you find anything amiss (we haven't seen anything yet), please report them in this topic. Thanks.

According to the Beeb, Ms have been trawling through their products and discovered in one of their flight sim a/c models a dummy switch which has apparently been included in Win8. I believe it's called Start? What would be really innovative would be to call it "close!"

  9. I'm sure all of us who have traveled on airlines take particular joy in documenting our trips, both for those with an interest in aviation and without, but especially for us airliner freaks. Just look at all the you tube videos of takeoffs and landings. Have any of you been asked by airline staff to not take photos, either in the plane or outside at the gate? I never have, except in India, where I believe they mention in their travel literature or the passenger safety briefing that photography is prohibited. I will be traveling on vacation to India this summer, and most likely, I won't feel deterred even in Indian airspace as I have sneaked some shots before without …

  10. I was looking around on the net for topics as to the landing characteristics of the King Air or turbo prop aircraft in general. I was surprised I couldn't find anything. The water cooler FBO discussions we all have at the airport or in flight training seems to be void of similar discussions on the net. What I mean is where would one find the common knowledge that a high wing Cessna has more float in the flare than a low wing aircraft. Questions I have that I can't seem to find for example is: 1. On short final in a King Air is much throttle used (in the Aeroworx King Air the throttle is slightly above idle as the aircraft is slippery with speed so with full flaps and…

  11. OUCH .... where to next? Buried in a 100-page report issued last week by the Commission on the Theft of American Intellectual Property was a recommendation to copy a tactic cyber scammers use to extort money from innocent victims. The IP Commission -- a private panel of politicians, military and defense officials and technology leaders -- is co-chaired by Jon Huntsman, former governor of Utah and former U.S. ambassador to China, and Dennis Blair, a retired U.S. Navy admiral and former Director of National Intelligence. Among more than 20 recommendations, the commission suggested that companies be allowed to lock files and cripple computers. More here ... http…

One flightsim I've grown to enjoy in recent days is the one in Google Earth. No, it's not really sophisticated. No steam gauges, no VC. But Google Earth has tons of photoreal scenery to fly over, often with 3-d buildings in notable cities, and it's all free. Framerates are fast--no idea how high, but it's incredibly smooth and fluid and Google Earth's photoreal scenery doesn't stutter. Want to see the Matterhorn? Just search on Zermatt, Switzerland. Want to visit Paris? You can go there too. And so on...... Anyway, I thought I would share. I know it's been mentioned before, but I am sure more might be interested. Regards, John

  13. The first production example of the new Cessna 182 JT-A Turbo Skylane made its inaugural flight this week, ushering in a new era as the first modern single-engine piston airplane designed specifically to run on jet-A. “The Turbo Skylane JT-A performed just as expected,” said Cessna senior test pilot Dale Bleakney. “The weather conditions were fantastic, and we took the Turbo 182 up for what turned out to be a very normal first flight. We flew for 2.3 hours, achieved a flight level of 8,000 feet, and attained a true air speed of 158 knots. We brought it in and did some takeoffs and landings, and everything went as expected.” Read more at http://www.flyingmag.com/aircraf…

  14. Has any aviation academy/ airline company around the world ever given a scholarship for fresh graduate students that hold BC's in mechanical engineering? so that the engineer becomes ATP holder pilot? please give names and countries, thanks!

  15. http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/05/annals-of-the-security-state-even-more-airplane-stories/276239/ Over the past few days I've relayed several stories that amount to the familiar police force stop-and-frisk policy being extended from the sidewalk to the skies. The case of Gabriel Silverstein (originally told by AOPA) is here. Those of Larry Gaines and Clay Phillips are here. This photo, apparently of a real interdiction, is via AOPA. Now pilots and others respond, plus another first-hand story, from another pilot who for no reason found his plane surrounded by police.

We like to occasionally post system statistics. These are from the first of March through to today:

  23. We have added a new feature that has been requested and we think you might find very useful. It is the ability to remove forums from the Index and lower level subforums from your view. You can do this via your User Control Panel; Click on the REMOVE FORUMS link and then select the forums you want to be removed from your Index and Subforum views. Use CONTROL RIGHT click to add or remove your selected forums. By clicking on a top level forum, you will also hide all sub-forums as well. If you just want to hide selected sub-forums, do not click on the top level forum but the sub-forums not of interest to you.

Seriously! I started to be FSX addict 2 years ago, and after a year I'm not scared of flying anymore. I don't fly often to be honest, last time flew to Turkey 3 years ago, and I was so nervous, wanted to jump out of my own skin before the flight. Now, I can't wait honestly to board on next flight, to pay attention to sounds, flaps, wing flex (popular topic these days), approaches and stuff. Those details will keep me occupied for sure. Also, after many hours pent in various virtual cockpits (A320, 757, Twotter) I realised how safe the tubeliners are, and that minor failures are not dangerous ones. To be honest, I'm more concerned when going on a long trip by car,…

  25. ......Hopefully. If you don't know what Back Country Prop Club is then gather round. BCPC was a bunch of guys and some chaps who flew together online and had FUN. No bollockings from ATC or rockets for not using proper procedures, just good old fashioned fun. We'd meet at predetermined location and...you get the idea. Here's how it works. I provide a dedicated server so no-one has to worry about hosting. We'd have a flight plan provided by 'whoever', this would be shared over TeamSpeak. The only aircraft allowed would be nothing bigger than a GA twin. Tubeliners/B17s etc would be automatically kicked by software. As would any aircraft guilty of flooding. A list of wh…
