Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. We have upgraded to the latest release of TapaTalk this evening. I hope this resolves some of the issues related to html and bbcode characters that we have been seeing in TapaTalk users posts. Here are some statistics for TapaTalk usage in the AVSIM Forums: Not exactly impressive and in terms of our total forum activity, nearly inconsequential. As a matter of support and the aggravation we see with this program, I question whether we should continue to support it for so few users.

  4. At 11:24 PM yesterday, Delta 268 pushed back from the gate at the old Pan American Worldport, thus ending commercial operations out of the historic terminal. The terminal opened 53 years ago today. It had a part in numerous historic events in aviation, such as being the departure terminal for the first commercial 747 flight. Despite the best efforts of numerous individuals, it is slated for demolition in the next two years.

I was watching HGTV with my wife (the show with the two brothers who renovate a home). Really I was mostly on my laptop checking out the aviation websites, but periodically would look up to the tube. So a commercial comes on and I decided to plant the "seed" about the Jetmax cockpit-- and how great it would be. I was getting that kind of glazed look I get when I tell her about new flightsim "stuffs". The Jetmax is around $7000.00 roughly, and extra "seeds" needed to be planted. We live in a golf community, but I don't play-- however I know how much membership to the club is, as well as the equipment and fees. So I use that angle-- the "all-in-all" I am a pretty ine…

A Cirrus SR-22 suffered it's first failure of it's parachute system Thursday (May 16th) over Texas, when a pilot reported instrument failure in IMC conditions. The pilot deciding he couldn't safely operate the aircraft in those conditions and realizing he had the chute as a backup, pulled the chute. He heard a pop, but the expected jerk from the drag from the chute never came. He then performed a rapid descent below the soup to 800ft, then returned to the airfield. http://www.aero-news.net/annticker.cfm?do=main.textpost&id=da260970-3974-400f-95b1-c095ab971053

Canada is boring. We have boring issues. It's true. That is why Americans and Europeans generally ignore us. Whether we should paint our warships light green (a la Air Canada) or grey and or to restore the "Royal" in front of the "Canadian Air Force" and the "Canadian Navy" really light up the talk show telephone lines. We never had a real Watergate type thing before when quotes like, "I am not a crook!" makes up headlines. The political left, middle or right is defined by which of the three sides of the question concerning cutting health care wait periods for elective surgery is the major plank in an election platform, whether by half, a third or only a quarter. That…

  12. We are pleased to announce the opening of the new Classified Advertising and Bargain Basement system. The new system bring a considerable amount of functionality to the advertiser that we could not provide in the previous forum format. As with the forum based system, members are encouraged to post bargains in the simulation and hardware marketplace. If you have hardware or software for sale, you can post your ads and they will be viewed by potentially thousands of AVSIM community members. You can open up the Classified Ads and Bargain Basement system here. This post has been promoted to an article

  13. Gentlemen, Recently, to be specific today, my niece approached me with a request to distribute a survey among flight simulator community members. I know I am new, but have been a AVSIM library user for years. I sincerely hope you don't mind! My niece is a student "free time management" at the "InHolland Academy" (School for higher education in the Netherlands) and is working on a project in which online communities play a major role. It's a small survey and requests little of your time. Not to mention that it is of course anonymously. My niece would be very grateful if you'd participate in this survey. The link is stated below: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZDG8B2W T…

  14. <p>A plane made an emergency landing in Moscow with the landing gear on fire before touchdown. Any idea on how a landing gear could catch fire before touchdown and what kind of procedures should the pilots take? It seems like a rare occurence. Notice in the video how a couple of passengers jumping off the wing are seen passing their hand luggage down to some other guy whilst delaying other passengers waiting behind them from getting away. It really annoys me when I see something like that. Those vital seconds wasted whilst one guy passess his bag off the wing the to the next guy could cost those people their lives. Pure stupidity. Here's the story and video: …

Hello, I was 6 years old when I visited the airport (OLBA) for the first time, before that, it was very rare to see an aircraft in Beirut skies due to the civil war during that period. Anyway, the first one I saw was an MEA 707, and it was like magic, without any introductions, the disease spread in my blood! Till this very specific moment, the addiction remains with the same intensity, therefore, I would like to know the scientific opinion of any psychiatric regarding this addiction. I know that we are a rare breed here on planet earth, hundreds of millions like cars, diving, fishing, hunting, a lot of very common hobbies, but this one (aviation) is rare, i…

This is an absolutely amazing story...had read about similar during WW2, but never involving jets! "Pardo's push" of March 10, 1967 was preceded by a similar event. In 1952, fighter ace Robbie Risner pushed fellow flyer Joe Logan sixty miles. The two men were flying F-86 Sabre jets and successfully cleared hostile territory, but Logan bailed out over water, was tangled in his canopy lines, and drowned. Risner was deemed a hero, but by Pardo's account, pilots were not encouraged to partake in similar activities. Pardo's push may have saved the lives of pilot Earl Aman and his weapons system officer Bob Houghton. But it would be decades before their efforts were recog…

  18. Today we have introduced a new BBCode feature. This is the FLOAT IMAGE code. If you would like to float an image to the right, like this: http://forum.avsim.net/uploads/cc4f48dacfe741379bf09d1de7d52dfc.jpg style="margin: 7px 7px 6px 6px"> You would use the following code for the right placement of the image: [float='right']http://link to your image.jpg[/float] For a left floated image, you would do the same but with 'left': [float='left']http://link to your image.jpg[/float] Which would yield this: http://forum.avsim.net/uploads/cc4f48dacfe741379bf09d1de7d52dfc.jpg style="margin: 7px 7px 6px 6px"> And that is all there is to it. Simple, heh?

#1. Joe Montana #2. Steve Young #3. Jim Kelly #4. John Elway #5. Here I have a tie Troy Aikman or Peyton Manning, the reason being Troy Aikman did win more Superbowls than Manning, but Manning is the ultimate professional QB. I didn't add Tom Brady, because I feel he is a product of Belicheck system, and would be irrelevant in any other system, IMHO!

  22. On this day, at approximately 10:00 p.m. EST, four years ago, AVSIM was hacked. Or, as it turned out, destroyed from within. You can read the full story here. This is not so much a time of reflection on the hack itself, but on the response of the flight simulation community; you. Without the support and contributions from our readers and community members, AVSIM as you know it today, may not have existed. The community INITIATED on its own a fund raising effort and in the end, contributed over $30,000 to our rebuilding and future system growth. This story is about those of you who saw something in AVSIM that deserved saving. This is a story about those of you who want…
