Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. Hi I am Sam High creator of FSXDB.com the fast airport resource for fsx airport information and checklists. I have just released a public API at FSXDB API using the same data as FSXDB.com. What does this mean? Well if you want to integrate the same data you find at FSXDB.com into your VA or flying club site or want to build a mobile app you got the data and ability to filter the airports as you do FSXDB.com Advanced Search Page. You now have the data at your disposal in a REST Service that returns JSON data easily consumed in UI widgets etc like JQUery Mobile, JQuery UI and the best free widgets I highly recommend you learn and use is Kendo UI. I have example grid widge…

  2. Look here: http://www.saitek.com/uk/blog/index.php/interested-in-beta-testing/ Saitek is working with Dovetail Games in beta testing the Steam version of FSX. It looks like from the information in the Saitek blog that Dovetail will be cleaning up bugs in FSX. The invitation was active as of 12/1/2014 at 12:30 PM, but I suspect that the closed beta has room for only a limited number of participants.

  3. I think I have just been scammed, I bought the Flight1 Cockpit Builders edition software from a guy in the U.K. on ebay. but I only got 1 Disk? with the Flight1 CD holder, can someone please tell me how many disks that the iflyPro NG cockpit Builders edition has.? ASAP Thank you. John...

(Short version: Don't. ^_^ ) A bit of a backstory: I'm the type of person who loves to track our family spending down to the penny. I've been doing this for a good 15 years now, keeping custom spreadsheets that tracks monthly household spending, all neatly categorized and organized by type. It started off being something that helped immensely with our savings goals, and I will admit to becoming a bit obsessive about it. It doesn't take up a large amount of time (I have it down to a fine science) and it's very useful (and sometimes disheartening) to see where our money goes each month. A portion of our monthly budgeting includes an 'allowance' for both my wife a…

I don't know if anyone has been following what BBS has been doing on their FB page, but it's appalling... About a week ago they put this picture of a candle that was burning at both ends which everyday they would make the candle smaller and smaller, and added captions like "bear with us... Almost there"... Then today when the candle should have been gone they post about how hard they are working etc etc and that they made no promises. You post a picture of a candle burning and captions like we are almost there... What do you think that is telling people? You basically were creating a total lie that this would be released today... I think they are out of money and create…

  7. Is it possible for someone to buy gift vouchers for FS software? The whole process seems to revolve around the user rather than anyone else. It would make life so much easier for family if they could buy me some scenery for my hobby rather than just hand over cash. Does anyone know if any of the FS retailers sells gift vouchers?

  8. I've been using/modifying/adding to/contributing to FS9 for many years, and it looks and feels much better now than when I started. But I am enthused by videos of P3D and XP10, which seem to be the front-runners for anyone wishing to improve their flight simulator experience. However, when looking for help in deciding which way to go myself, the bulk of the discussion I can find concerns the visual appearance of the sim. There is almost no in depth discussion about which provides the most realistic flight dynamics; indeed, there is often an off-the-cuff remark to the effect that "the FD is not perfect but is better than.....". I have (very limited) real world pilot expe…

  9. Thinking about buying a Nikon D3200 for my wife/family for Christmas. There's two versions, a kit with an extra lens and bag for $496 on Amazon/Target/Best Buy or the camera with a VR lens for $450. My question is, is the VR lens worth not getting the extra (non-VR) lens? What's the benefit, when does VR make a difference in your experience? I searched around already on Google and such, just wanted more opinions. Thanks!

Hey all, first off I hope everyone has had a great Thanksgiving and taking advantage of Black Friday...I have starte wondering if any companies are in development of a MD-80. Leo Maddog was a great addon but the forums dead and from what I can tell Maddog X is too. The CLS MD-80 is too simple and the Flight1 is starting to get outdated in my opinion also the VC is a little odd looking. I have always been a big fan of the old Maddogs and was wonderig if amyone knows of any possible development. I know their is one for X-Plane 10 being built bt Rotate Sim and a 717-200 for FSX being made by TFDI. Thanks.

Hi to all fellow flight "simmers"... I was wondering today why do we all have this addiction to flight simulation..? I wonder what percentage of the population we are? Our partners have no idea how we feel and love this hobby...we have even produced celebrities of which we are all familiar, but nobody outside our world knows of them...Word Not Allowed, *******, Nick, etc, etc....we even talk in language of fsx.cfg, p3d.cfg, etc.....nobody can understand us... Just a tribute to our great hobby and all our fellow members...we are comprised of many cultures, different backgrounds...but we all share a common denominator.....we love flight!!

What are some of the smelliest food you guys love to eat? For me, it's the King of Fruits. DURIAN! You hear people use all kinds of words to describe the smell. For me, it doesn't smell like anything else out there. It's unique. The only thing I can think of is that the smell hits you in a similar way red wine does. No, they don't smell anything alike. What I mean is the smell of fermentation and alcohol. But you don't eat durian that's been fermenting. You'd want one that's ripe. Even before they ripen, there is a bit of fermentation smell. The taste is amazing. I prefer durians with the yellow fruits over white, but, I'm not picky. You offer me ei…

  19. I've been posting this note around to the various flight simulator forums - I call it copy/paste evangelism. I'm doing it because I feel that the castAR is literally THE most revolutionary device to appear in a long time. It's going to make DIY cockpits and flight training in general a whole new world. ============================================================= Here's a message I posted on the simpits-tech list: ---------- Well today I had my mind blown. Not just a little either. We're talking full skullcap separation here. I've been peripherially aware of an augmented reality project called castAR. I saw a still photo of it in action the other day and t…

Just discovered the Project Tupolev 154B-2 for FSX. Looks like an incredible free addon! However, I need help loading it. It loads in the VC mode but as soon as I click on anything on the screen, even the FSX menu at the top of screen, I get a white screen and "FSX not responding message" that seems to stay on forever. I'm running it on Windows 7 64 bit and used the installer on the Project Tupolev website. I tried to rerun the installer but don't know how to uninstall this aircraft first....it is not in the control panel under add or remove programs. How do I manually uninstall an aircraft and how do I get this to work. Thanks in advance for any help. I search…

  24. I have just downloaded and installed EFASS, and boy was I pleasantly surprised. All of the advantages I have become used to with EFB and all for free. Setting up on my second PC was really easy and took mere seconds to achieve. The author also says it will also run on a tablet, although I haven' t tried this, yet. It also imports the created flight plans into the most popular aircraft PMDG, Aerosoft etc. I just cannot believe this is being offered free. Well worth checking out. http://froom.de/efass/

Tom was 73 with huge flying experience (over 18,000 hrs) and his wife was a pilot too. They both maintained a private airport in northeastern Pennsylvania where they kept many antique aircraft that Tom brought back to life. They would fly to many fly-ins and other aviation events to display their aircraft. From one of the events they did not return safely. It was Labor Day 2013. They were trapped by a line of thunderstorms, they had many warnings but despite that pressed on to return home. They crashed and Tom and his wife perished. Most recent FLYING magazine writes about this accident - it is a classic study of pilot who would rather keep flying than wait out bad …
