Raptor Lake - Smooth MSFS performance

I'm more intrigued by lower power and heat than cost or other, so I'll be looking at 7800x3D or whatever it is.  I do know 13900K will be more than adequate as will 7800x3D for my needs.

I saw something somewhere about limiting the power to 90 watts TDP on the 13900, with hardly any penalty, but I have lost the quote / thread somewhere.  Seems incredible, but I would love to give it a go on my 12900 - it runs so hot.

I got a lot of useful info from this video by derbauer: https://youtu.be/mDMC32wMypM. He talks about overclocking the 12900K and also limiting the power to make it run cooler. As someone mentioned he mentioned the same with the 13900K - haven't seen that video yet though.

Sure I know.  I'd like to see the same video on your old 3090--did you ever do something very similar?

I didn't make a video with the 3090. I did some benchmarks though on the same LAX flight, same settings with the 3090 vs the 4090. Can't remember where I posted them though 🙂 Man, it's been a busy couple of weeks in terms of hardware launches and MSFS stuff happening.

Hmm yes. I'm thinking now, like others mentioned, that the worst heat and power issues with the 13900 is with running Cinebench or blender or similar. Probably it'll be a lot different when running MSFS.

What does your 12900 run at in MSFS in the highest demand areas?

I am about to buy a completely new system by the end of this year.

I am in exactly the same situation. only difference: based on the fact that both CPU manufacturers will release very very powerful CPUs allegedly in Q1/2023, I will not waste money on technology that is outdated in 3 months, not if you want to enjoy it for the next 5 years, as you said before. therefore: this christmas only cookies, no chips. I know it's hard. but has great rewards. manufacturers always release new tech right AFTER christmas for a reason. show must go on.

very nice.

It's not that bad. 54C average from a LAX area flight in the analog King Air with max settings (TLOD150) and AI traffic. That's with 2x360mm radiators though.

I can confirm this. A good cooling system icw with max performance and moderate temps makes the system fast and stable. In my case EKWB…

Gerard, that is a massive radiator! Must be the thickest one that EK makes. Thanks for the pictures, that's quite a setup you've got!

So I would say the 13xxx is king for now. Until the 7xxxX3D will arrive.

Anyone doing an upgrade now, IMO, would be throwing money away with the 13900k. Not when AMD at CES in early January is releasing the x3d Zen 4. If your rig is just for MSFS, the 5800x3d shows it works the best with it. So, waiting 90 days or so for the next gen of that is the smart (and only) play in my book.

I ended up getting a 13700K for around 500 Euro. Most tests so far seem to show a good improvement over the 12700K, even when using DDR4. That was after I started to check how much it would cost to build an AM5 system with a 7700X as a stop-gap until the X3D (almost 2000 Euro). My strategy is now to keep the rest of my system and possibly get a 4090 early next year once price/availability look more favorable.

You can expect new test results when DLSS in fully implemented in MSFS and other titles. ZEN 4 has been delayed due issues according to reports.

Thanks @turbomax, that's a clear statement. Not yet decided but I might consider this seriously. Take X-mas time for grandchildren and nature and buy the new machine in Spring.
