Excuse me if this is an extremely novice question but in an aircraft like the PMDG 744 (my favourite payware aircraft) what exactly is the difference between flaps and spoilers? As far as I understand it, both serve the same purpose - a small piece of metal sticks up on the wing and "spoils" the airflow, therefore causing drag and slowing the plane down. So why have two? Why not just have either flaps or spoilers? I'm very interested to see what the answer to this is as it's something I've been thinking about for a while now. Thanks in advance, Greg.

Hi,Sometimes, usually when I change my pre-selected approach on the DEP/ARR page in the FMC and press EXEC, the message "NAV INVALID" appears. This also happens to me when taking off from KSEA, circling around and trying to choose a runway for landing on the DEP/ARR page. I always have to land manually with no navigation, not that it's a problem to land manually in fair weather, but I'd like to know why this FMC message appears. Is this a bug? If not, what am I doing wrong?Edit: I don't have this problem when flying a programmed route from one airport to the other without changing the approach/runway.Best regards,

Hi folks, when starting at EHAM Schipol RWY24 for a ERNEM 1S SID, why is there no SID for EHAM availble in the 744 FMC? This hub is not that small! To all the profs out there:Would you enter the SID in the ROUTE page like this and fly it with VNAV/LNAV- EH001 N52

Hi all,two quick questions on the 737NG1) Relating to failures and setting them in the menu, say if I picked random and 60 minutes appears, does that mean the system will fail within 60 minutes or exactly once 60 minutes has elapsed?2) What is LRC on the Climb Page of the FMC?...is it lowest rate of climb?Ps does anyone have any suggestions for some programs which randomly generate failures based on probability of failure of the system based on flight time? Thanks, alan

Now I've combatted my earlier issue I'm now experiencing a different some what more worrying problem.I was crising across the pond at FL360 (my claculated optimum CRZ level) and whils hanging some washing up glanced across to the monitor to see that my speed had dropped into the 1st portion of the low speed buffet zone, the wins was at a constant and the speed continued to leak. The A/T made no attept to recover from the situation, it was almost like the A/T was non-existent.I had to fly with manual throttle control making small input changes to maintain the CRZ speed.Earlier in the day a frien of mine had reported a similar issue to me so I'm wondering if this is indeed a…

I noticed that the GPWS sounds always scare me when they come on. I feel that they are too loud as I love to have my engine sounds put all the way up to max to have that nice engine sounds. But on the approach when the 25 hundred comes on...I almost always jump as it is very very loud and in real life the sound is not as loud as that. Was just wondering if there was anyway to reduced the altitude call outs? Regards,Alx G

Hi all,In case anyone was interested in the other thread regarding the CDU screen I've been working on, I thought I'd post a picture of what I've done so you can see how "usable" it can be.Please excuse the mess in here, I am very tight on space.http://www.verzend.be/v/521969/DSCF3466.JPG.htmlI beleive its the closest thing to a hardware (engravity) unit, and whilst it don't compare in feel or looks... it at least meets the basic functions of what I tried to do, which was see the CDU in isolation, and be able to interact with it.This is really handy for those with a tablet laptop or touchscreen who wants to get more use out of it.Below are some things you need to have a s…

Hi,I have an idea to get a (inexpensive) touchscreen for my second monitor and use it for the CDU(s).I've worked out that one standard monitor is about the same aspect ratio at 2x CDUs side by side.Has anyone tried this in multi monitor configuration? Does the touch screen part work ok on the second monitor.I would love the engravity unit, but I'm still recovering from the Aerosoft MCP,EFIS,EICAS purchase. No regrets there, but I paid a premium because its so rare now.On another note, I replied to my own FPS thread a few days back, and it vanished. I can't remember whether I signed it or not. If not, fair play - but can someone clear that little mystery up for me? I don't…

Hi guys, when descending using the FLCh mode thrust should be automatically set to idle and the speed is regulated by pitch. Unless the speed is set manually so high that more thrust is needed it should remain at idle. That

Hi PMDG. i love your planes, of course. i took the NCA for a ride tonight, and I saw this from the outside:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/145557.gifit was night. one half of the plane is lighter than the other. sorry it is small but you can clearly see the differencethanks, maxim

When using the RB211 engines on the cargo version, the N1 values respond instantly on the EICAS in response to subtle throttle changes, whilst the EPR readings seem to lag. It is therefore much easier to set taxi thrust via N1 rather than EPR. Is this consistent with real-world prodecure?Thank you.

Hi guys,After a major system rebuild, including the use of a Widescreen LCD panel, I have problems with the 737NG overhead panel.Just to clarify the position initally, I installed my PMDG products in the following order PMDG B1900 C & D, 737NG 600-700, 737NG 800-900, B747-400 QOS.The MZALFOTRI buttons essentially work from all positions EXCEPT the overhead panel. If I call up the overhead panel, it is then stuck there and I cannot get back to the MAIN or ZOOMED panel. The throttle panel, radio panel etc. can be called up from the overhead no problem, but the APPROACH and LANDING panels with come up IN FRONT of the (locked) Overhead panel.I can only use the view menu t…

Recently the American FAA imposed a $22,000 dollar fine on British Airways for the following infraction:Recently, a BA 747-400 enroute from Los Angeles to London Heathrow experienced a number 2 engine compressor stall shortly after takeoff from KLAX, this before takeoff flaps had been fully retracted. The BA crew shut down the afflicted engine (after determining anomalous engine behavior), declared an emergency, then was vectored over the Pacific by SoCal approach, ostensibly to dump fuel for landing back at LAX. After holding for approximately 20 minutes off of the coast of Los Angeles, and after having consulted BA maintainence back in England, the BA crew cancelled…

Hi guys.......The other night I was practicing a low viz approach into the KJFK ILS31R, and to my astonishment I flew right through the localizer in my PMDG 737-700. I made sure I set 111.5 and 314 degrees, flew about a 45 degree angle intercept, and had LOC set in the panel. Yet the airplane did NOT intercept the loc at all. I re flew the intercept twice more and still no intercept. Even on APP, I flew right through. I ensured that the FMC had the correct approach set too, although it was not done via LNAV. A few weeks ago I updated the PMDG procedures to the 0603 currency. I have to assume there is a nav data glitch somewhere. I keep getting confused as to the right seq…

I've searched the forums and can't find a previous post on this but forgive me if it's an old question...Is there a bug with the VC textures? I just bought the B1900C (version 1.02) and it's a great plane. The only glitch I've seen is when I'm in the VC and pan about I get glimpses of sky appearing where the roof meets the walls of the model. This join is covered normally by a thick black line (trim?) which the sun visors attach to but in my plane this keeps disappearing intermittently... This happens on all models and liveries. It's only a tiny detail but I wondered if there was a solution?Anyway, thanks for the wonderful PMDG range guys and girls, I have all but the 747…
