The Win7 OS Forum

As simmers migrate to Win 7, we are sure there are going to be numerous questions regarding the use of FS and other sims in this new system. We have opened this forum for the community to focus on that OS and the impact of FS use within it.

Hi all just wondered if there was something I can do about this, that would not involve a hard drive reformat. When I bought my pc it came with windows 7 home edition but I already owned a copy of win7 pro 64bit which I wanted to use instead. I was told by the company I bought the pc from that as long as I didn't use the serial from the home edition I could put my win7 pro over the top of the installed home edition and use my pro serial to reg the program this I did,but over the last couple of years win7 has always caused some strange problems either freezing during boot or having problems with corrupt files that require it repairing itself It always ends up working…

  2. I just finished a brand new desktop computer build. Followed advice in AVSIM Hardware and Software Guide before installing FSX. Installed FSX with Acceleration on a single monitor, integrated motherboard graphics. Every seemed to go well. Added second monitor. Everything fine. Initiated Download of Saitek X52 Pro driver from Saitek.com. Saw, "please wait... Could take several minutes", (or words to that effect). Left room to make dinner. Came back 30 minutes later. Monitors black. Moving mouse did not rouse monitors back to life. Restarted desktop. Logged in to Windows as normal. Desktop came back up on both monitors, but there are no icons, no Start (lower righ…

I don't really know which forum in which to post this, but here goes: I have discovered that at a few sites, my credit cards will not be accepted when I try to purchase on my computer running the Windows 7, 64bit Operating System. This just happened with SimMarket for a purchase of the new FlightSimulator Commander Version. With purchases on many other sites there is no problem. The same thing occurred with Windows XP Pro 64 bit before I upgraded many months ago. To make the same purchase that was denied, with the same credit cards, I can go to a secondary computer, or my laptop which run on the 32bit operating systems, and there is no problem at all. Has anyone e…

Excuse for lack of computer knowledge, but.... How can I uninstall FSX completely?? I have my original FSX disks. Can I merely go to Win 7 add/remove programs and uninstall FSX? Or.... does ALL the associated files have to be removed.

  5. Hi, I just decided to check what processes my system is starting on startup so I went into MSCONFIG and was shocked at all of them. There were 27. I sure would like to shut down most of them but am afraid of shutting down something necessary. Does anyone know the programs that are absolutely necessary on startup on a Win 7-Professional-64 bit system for best performance of FSX? Thanks. Tom

I just reinstalled Win7 and am in the process of reinstalling all of my programs. When trying to install PF2000 from my CD, during the search for files part of the installation I get an error window popup, "Setup32 has stopped working". In the process of trying to find a solution I made a serious mistake. This scenario is posted on the Oncourse/PFE forum under "Setup32 has stopped working." After a google search concerning the Setup32 issue, On the advice of a suggestion or two I unchecked all of the services and startup items in msconfig to disable them. When this proved to not be a solution to my PF2000 installation I checked all again in an attempt to enable them …

Hi All.... Just installed Win 7 and currently re-building my FSX...Delightful it is too  Anyway, thinking of now re-installing FS9..BUT...Was looking where to put it..I want to avoid C:/ as that's where FSX is. Another option is 'Data Volume (E:) Thing is: a) Not sure what this is b)Can I use it for FS9? c) would E:/FS9 be OK? Tried to look into this in more depth and stumbled across some PC sites, these just confirm to me how dumb I am when it comes to IT! Thanks in advance ZA

I've just recently built a computer to handle FSX and PMDG's 777. My main drive is a 240GB Samsung 840 SSD with Win7 installed. I've been having a hassle with FSX's SP1 and SP2, got them loaded after FSX but then found I had not done it correctly using a guide from the FSX forum. I thought maybe this was the reason my PGDG 777 aircraft were not showing as aircraft choices when trying to start a first flight.. Tried to uninstall and reinstall and could not get the two SP's installed, only one, so I realized my mistake of not geting the FSX Gold and now have one. I am now thinking of putting FSX and 777 on a new Seagate Barracuda 7,200rpm 1TB HD. I never really messed wit…

Gentlemen, I have a computer which was o'clocked to 3.8Ghz. It worked pretty well with FSX - then my windows 7 became corrupt and had to be reloaded. Not too long after this I saw the 'bsod' and saw the notice that "Overclocking Failed". I confirmed with Belarc that my processor was now back at 2.5Ghz or so. I would like to take it back to the builder and have him reset the o'clock, but I've heard that it will corrupt all my software and I"ve spent weeks already re installing everything. . . Will the software be affected if I have the settings returned to Oclock status? Thanks!! Donn

After having the computer shop install a new 250 Gb Hd and Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit,, my FSX Deluxe edition appears to be running in slow motion out the front window view. Side views appear almost normal in speed. Running the zoom down from the default to .8 or .5 does move some of the buildings perspective around but does not do anything for the forward video. SP1 and 2 were also installed for FSX. This fixed the problem of not being able to change radio freqs and autopilot settings. The rest of the computer is the same as before except the ram is now 4 Gb instead of 2 and the Win XP 32 bit is gone (hd too) and replaced with the 64 bit Win 7 Home Premium. The Radion 4…

  12. Started by topofthestack,

After suffering a hard disk failure, the repair shop installed a new hard drive and rescued many of my files and directories. When the computer was returned it had my C:\FSX directory and all the subfolders from various add-ons e.g. LVLD, PMDG and scenery files but the program wouldn't work. I guess that this is because most of the registry files for FSX weren't there? To forestall having to delete the whole of my FSX and do a clean install, I've tried to reinstall it, along with SP1 & 2 and the SDK programs. This has gone OK but now when attempting to start I get a message saying that FSX needs MS DirectX 9.0 and that this is on the Set up disc, or available …

  13. I am looking for a good way to back up my PC's. I have 5 PC's (4 running W7-64 one W8-64) a Windows Home Server with 4 TB of space and a 2TB NAS (primarily for photos). I have been using ReadyVault NAS but for some reason on my FS box the engine keeps failing. ReadyNAS Vault is a free version of Geni9, which I like as it saves previous versions of the file but I am concerned if I move up to their Comprehensive Backup software I will have the same issue with the engine failing. I would like something that does incremental versioning and back-ups. automated, and it needs to be able to save to a networked location. Any thoughts on what would be a good (and reasonably …

  15. Hi Everyone: Recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 64 bit. It seems that most times when I go to a menu in FSX (like to save a flight for example) and I then return to FSX, the screen goes black or the graphics just keep flickering and then I have to restart FSX. The same happens sometimes when I go outside of FSX to launch a program like Radar Contact. When I return, the graphics are all messed up and the screen is either black or most of the items like the airport have either disappeared or the graphics are flickering. Even a redraw of the scenery does not fix it. I am certain I have the right Chip set and the latest drivers for my NVIDIA G force GTX 280 card. This…

Hi, I hope this is the correct place to ask for help. I did something stupid in restoring my FSX drive. The drive is 1TB, with a single partition. I was using EaseUS Todo, which I've used often before, but must have fouled up, since I now have in Disk Management, Disk 1 System Reserved 100MB NTFS Healthy (system, Active). Is there a way, in Win7, to get rid of this new System Reserved partition, and restore the disk to a normal data drive? If so, I can carefully restore the contents from a backup. Hopefully, Jim

I have a three year old PC my computer specs should be listed in the sidebar. I am thinking of getting a new PC, don't want to build my own but do what a higher end processor, graphics card looking to move into P3D v2+ with DX10.11. Shopping around I see they all come with WIN8. I do not want Win8, I want Win7. Does anyone know how I can get new PC and get Win7 instead of Win8. I don't want to pay for a setup to Win7 on a new computer, if I can even get a copy. Regards; Bryan

I just started getting Win 7 lockups after enabling AA 4x. The video card fan went into turbo mode to try to cool itself, while the gpu cranked along at 99% in P3DV2.1. I also had REX and ch manager loading on startup. I removed those from statrtup and still got lockups. Now, it locks up whenever I try a virus scan or do some browsing. I continue to bring clock speed down from 3.4 ghz to 3.0 now. I tried using nirsoft bluescreen. It appears that the kernel is crashing with code 0x0000101. It's seems to be a pretty generic error. The most recent lockup, I did not get a crash dump file for nirsoft bluescreen. Is there any other utility or setting I can s…

  19. A question for the group... I'm moving (s-l-o-w-l-y) through my new build and I'm almost at the point where I'll have to load and tweak the OS. For years, I've been a devoted follower of Nick Needham (a.k.a NickN), and I've set up all my systems using his Windows setup guide. But this time around, I'm a bit concerned about security. Over the summer, I was one of the people hit by the sirefef virus that spread - I think - through an Avsim ad banner during a brief security lapse. It affected my work computer, not my flightsim computer - this was less of a problem for me since the setup on the work computer wasn't nearly as elaborate. But I did wind up having to re…

I have installed a good firewall and disabled windows firewall, tried to install again with the same result. I`m running Win764bit as administrator. Any ideas as to a fix? cannylad

  21. Hi all I just installed a fresh copy of W7 64 bit onto my new PC. Everything seems fine, but the PC does not recognise the wired connection from by BT Infinity 2 broadband. I therfore have no internet connection. On my previous PC, you could simply plug the ethernet cable into the motherboard and within a few seconds you could connect to the internet. In Hardware Devices, my ethernet adaptor device has a yellow exclaimation next to it. I'm thinking the drivers may not have installed properly during the Windows installation. Can I obtain them from the motherboard software DVD that comes with a new PC? Thanks erich

  22. Having a problem with Dreamfleet's 737400 and FS2002 on my new 64 bit Windows 7 system. The DF737 loads ok but as soon as I switch to the 2D instrument panel, FS2002 freezes briefly, then crashes. Well NEARLY everytime. Once out of a hundred trys (more or less) the panel loads. If I then switch to spot mode and try to switch back to the 2D panel again, though, FS2002 crashes. I've tested pretty much every other aircraft I have installed in FS2002 and none I've tested (including PMDG's 737-600\700) have this problem. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'd hate to have to dump the DF737 and FS2002 along with it (or switch back to my XP Pro system just to run it)! On…

I don't know exactly what happend but all of a sudden FSX crashed when loading a flight at 33%. I finally decided I had no choice but to restore from an Acronis backup. Worked great and very quickly I was back up and running. Only problem was that my last full backup was from May 2013 so I had a bunch of addons to install that I had purchased since that date. I guess the lesson is backup once a month. Now I have a question. - I did another full backup (not incremental) which took several hours to complete, but my question is why not just do the incremental...is it really a problem doing it this way ? Maybe do the incremental most of the time and a full backup…

There are various System Volume files scattered about my disk. Right now I exclude them from defragging. However, are these active files that are read when the disk is accessed? Or, are they just a record of activities? If they are involved in every disk access then I definitely need to defrag them.
