The Win7 OS Forum

As simmers migrate to Win 7, we are sure there are going to be numerous questions regarding the use of FS and other sims in this new system. We have opened this forum for the community to focus on that OS and the impact of FS use within it.

hi, just wondered if someone might know the answer to this. I am reinstalling p3d and fsx after a purchase of a couple of new drives, and after putting several items of scenery back on,I noticed that drive space had increased massively on what I was expecting. After a bit of searching I found that the cause was files located in my local temp folder in (username)app data. Once I cleaned this out after my programs had been installed and checked they were running ok I manually deleted the files in the temp folder and recovered 85GB of space. Why does these temp files not automatically delete after the program has installed? cheers

I have almost 300 file folders on my "C" Drive that have appeared from an unknown source. Name examples: 1a73ede68382b425ae3f2b fee433929e7eb729e7b928ed048482 Dates modified run from June 25, 2014 to January 17, 2015. It is possible that I missed one that may have been earlier, or later, but I believe all are from June, 2014 through January, 2015. I can't wonder if there were earlier which were removed by the same unknown sources. All folders appear to be empty although I did not check all of them. I run two computers side by side. These unknown folders originate on the primary computer in which I run FS9 and FSX. No such files ever show up on the second…

Hey everyone! I have read many forum posts including on here, of how to move my FSX folder and P3D...from my 1TB HDD to my new 512GB SSD drive. I hear MKLINK is the best method, but which. This forum has posted to use /J and others /D. Not sure if this is even the best method. My questions are as follows. 1) What is the most up to date procedure of moving FSX over without having to reinstall all my sceneries and addons (there's a lot!!). and 2) if it is simply as a mklink from the old D drive to new E drive....will it still be slow like the HDD or will this be fully optimized still for SSD. My thought for a moment was that since its still a junction to t…

Posted this over on the VATSIM forums, but thought I would post here as well. I decided the other day to fly from HECA to OTHH. Everytime I tried to load up at HECA Default my FS2004 would freeze at 6% while loading the textures. Looking at event viewer logs it says the faulting application is fs9.exe and ntdll.dll is the faulting module. It's not just at HECA. Any airfield in Africa and Madagascar produce this same freeze at anywhere between 6% and 8% of the texture loading process. I could not load in Tel Aviv either without the freeze. Western Saudi also produced a freeze. Tenerife did not and neither did Gibraltar. I tried flying from Gibraltar to the near…

When installing Saitek X52Pro Joystick and Throttle software I have had two Win 7 64 crashes such that I had to reinstall Win 7 completely. When first plugging in the usb cable from the throttle should I let windows search and install its basic drivers and then get the latest drivers from Saitek and install over. Or, would it be better to stop the windows basic install and just install the latest from Saitek. Any advice would be much appreciated as having to keep reinstalling windows is getting a bit much! I want to install a second copy of Windows7 on an SSD to see how that performs. However, I am concerned that the existing copy I am running will be badly effected. Also, will the second copy automatically be available. I do have installed a program called IRBOOT (OS Selector) that I used before when I partitioned a disk wo keep XP as a backup.

That's what happened to my PC. I may have pushed my 560Ti a little too hard without proper cooling. The overheating also damaged my mobo. I've decided to purchase a new system rather than replace parts in a 4 year old computer. I need help answering this question. I'd like to install what will be my old hard drive as a secondary drive in my new system. That means there will two drives with WIndows 7. Can that cause conflicts or problems? Thanks!

Hello, I have been using FSX for quite a while and also recently P3D and now I have released that I have quite a lot of add ons installed. What i would really like to do is make a proper back up of my system so in the event something goes horribly wrong then i am not in the position of having to reinstall everything. ( I think its called making an image? ) At the moment my FSX is on a 500GB SSD and my P3d is on my HDD, I am fairly new to Windows 7 and I have found " create a system image" via the back up and restore center, will this do what i want it to or do I need to purchase a piece of software? Also is it easy to back and and restore an image? Darran

Rarely do I need to boot into Safe Mode (Vista) but I had to do it the other day to disable some software that was hogging memory. When I booted, it would freeze at CRCDISK.SYS and not proceed any further. I researched several places but did not get a definite solution regarding the issue. Finally, I did a logged boot into a normal startup and took note of the driver that loaded right after CRCDISK.SYS. I saw that it was my Epson printer driver. Since I usually leave the printer turned off, I chose to turn it on for the boot into Safe Mode and was able to get to the desktop. Obviously in safe mode, printer support was required and the O/S was not detecting a printer…

A couple of years ago, I tried some RAM-cleaners, but the best I found still made my sim glitch and stutter, or even caused CTDs. This weekend, I came across a RAM-cleaner review, which said that Cleanmem works different from other RAM-cleaners, so I thought to give it a go. I've been testing all day, yesterday, and it seems to work very well and my RAM use has never been lower, but when googling for use with flightsims, I didnt find anything at all, what makes me think there's still a catch. If this works as well as it looks so far, I cant really believe that this isnt widely used among flightsimmer, so I'm actually waiting for the 'big boom' to appear and mess up my…

A couple of times already, when asking for a reactivation for a limited activation on some software, I get told I installed the software on different computers, which is not the case. I've got only one computer on which I run my flightsim software, which hasnt been changed in any way, but somehow it registers as a different computer than it did the last time I activated some software and this happens every time Windows is reinstalled. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Can anyone confirm that the Autothumbnail utility for FSX (autothumbnail2.zip) does work in a Win 7 64 bit setup?I am trying to help another simmer who wishes to use the utility and want to be sure we are not wasting our time if it simply will not run under Win 7.He does have the revised autothumbnail.exe file (for 64 bit setups) available here: http://www.zshare.net/download/691719708cc75b0c/ - but is still getting error messages.I use it in a 32 bit XP setup with no issues. I do not currently have access to a Win 7 64 bit machine so cannot prove it one way or another myself. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Twice with different aircraft I have had the screen "gray out" and go into an unrecoverable (flight simulator not responding) freeze. There is no sound, although I can see through the gray film to the frozen sim. The last time I had right-clicked, and the menu was visible beneath the film and the "wait" circle was turning. Both times I was well into a flight. I had no weather at all (cleared) the second time. So it doesn't seem to be related to airplanes, or weather. Although it is not like the typical WIndows 7 blackout, I thought to try the uiautomationcore.dll fix. It didn't work. The only thing I'm doing is running Nvidia Inspector at the recommended settings.

  21. 2 TB, if you want to use any version of W7 that has the built-in Backup and System Image suite, such as W7 Ultimate, or Professional. You can only use a 2 TB and less capacity hard drive, or USB external drive to use this W7 built-in feature. It has to do with W7 not correctly parsing the File System, and then can not write a file to the greater-than-2TB disk drive. This is well documented upon the Net. So...the bottom line is...if you wish to purchase a HD (whether internal, or external) you can use with no problem drives such as a 4 or 6 TB drive...with the only catch that you can not create a System Image on it. I found that out the hard way...bought a 4 TB M…

Hello I have a question about the Software "Acronis True Image". Do anybody of you using this tool for backup the sim and take it back, if the Sim is maybe corrupted or do some problems!? I always do this but I have a question about this. I use Prepar3d on a seperate Drive where Win 7 is not installed. Everytime I recover my sim back my older Addons are still installed in the registry and hidden folder like where Prepar3d.cfg and scenery.cfg is located. How I can backup/recovery my FS efficiently? I hope you understand what I am talking about and could give me some great tips.

  24. Folks, in this update, there are Critical and Important updates, around 15 of them for all Windows platforms. But...there is one update KB2949927 that has a critical error attached to it, and will BORK your Windows installation, whereby you will not be able to restart and successfully load Windows to your password/start screen. What this security update does, is security-update: BitLocker on your system. The trouble is...that if you are NOT running Bitlocker (that is..you are not running an encrypted file system), then this update will not only not install (failed installation notification) but will affect, and cause to fail all the other 13 KB security updates. Hello, In the last few days I've run into an issue that I've never seen before. Any downloads that are in the zip format when opened are corrupt. It doesn't matter what site I download it from or what zip program I use to open, it gives an error message that the file is corrupt. When doing a Google search for this problem a number of things are given for this problem. One is network settings. That doesn't apply because I can download to my laptop and open them just fine. Another is a bad memory stick. I've done memtest with no errors so I am at a loss for a solution. If anyone has had this problem before I'd appreciate some advice on how to deal with this. Thanks…
