The Win7 OS Forum

As simmers migrate to Win 7, we are sure there are going to be numerous questions regarding the use of FS and other sims in this new system. We have opened this forum for the community to focus on that OS and the impact of FS use within it.

  1. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and as always, seems over the years to accumulate more and more processes running when I look through task manager. I'm not running about 90. I have ESET anti-virus which is up-to-date and finds no infections, so I don't think these are viruses. However, I have a feeling many are "bundle ware" where I fail to see and uncheck the box to install the Bing bar or whatever (ok, I know it's not Bing because I actually saw that one). Is anybody able to point me to a guide or software to get started identifying some of these processes and perhaps getting ride of them?

HI Folks - I recently updated my Windows 7 64 bit os with Windows 7 SP1. When I try to start FSX I get a message that a problem was encounteredf and it can't start FSX. No further details are given. I googled the probelm and found many others had the same problem, but couldn't find a good solution. Has anyone here had or heard of the problem and how to fix it? Thanks Howard

I have a Core I5 processor overclocked to 4.3, watercooled by Corsair. Nvidia Geforce 660, 8 gig ram, 500 gig SSD as drive C:, 240 gig SSD as FSX drive. I was experiencing numerous Crash to Desktop (CTD) events. The frequency of the CTDs was random sometimes occuring on every flight load. Even when they were less frequent I could not complete a KSFO to KSAN flight without a CTD. I posted on Word Not Allowed's siter and was told I needed to reinstall windows and FSX. I took my computer to the shop and when I got the computer back, overclock now at 4.0 I experienced nymerous BSODs. some research on my part noted that the BSODs seemed to be related to CORSAIRLINK2. I reinsta…

Hello, I have a SSD for my primary OS with windows 7 and a WD 1T for storage. How do I go about installing another OS on the WD? What would be the process? BIOS set up? Any help would be appreciated.

  7. Is there a comprehensive guide to re-installing the Windows 7 OS, as well as FSX Gold, onto an SSD? And can ORBX sceneries and other drive-space gobbling sceneries be placed on a conventional IDE SATA drive? Thanks for any tips/links/pointers

  8. When I was first running FSX I noticed a little info on the right bottom of screen that said something about changing the background for fsx. No problems. Fsx ran fine and when I quite fsx it return to my normal theme. The I read in the guide to change the theme to windows classic. I did and fsx ran fine. But now I can not do anything with the background. It doesn't function anymore. Add picture, chg theme etc. When I try to change the background I only get a back screen. But I can use the windows classic. I googled this and it appears that if you have a program that has a display change you can't fix this. I'm sure someone has ran into this before and can tel…

Hi folks, I fear that I have some corrupt files in my W7 install. For starters, I have the icons in my pictures folder set to display thumbnails, but for some reason, they are only showing as generic icons. Also, If I click on the Icon and try to view it in the preview pane option, nothing shows in the pane. I tried all kinds of fixes from the web, none took. Some other sporatic issues have crept up, nothing major, but In the 3 years I have used W7, I never recall having such issues. I just ran the sfc/ scannow in the command prompt, and it shows lots of corrupted files, but it cannot fix them. I think the best thing to do is to just run a windows 7 repair. I …

Hi there, My Goal and Harddisk / software setup!>> I need some advice here. I want to backup (image) 2 harddisks. I will use the program Acronis True image home. ^^That is if the above program suits my intended wishes. I have a 500gb western digital caviar blue 64m/7200rpm harddisk where windows is installed (including programs and games) Total sized that is used = 158gigabyte. I also have a 1000gb western digital caviar blue 64m/7200rpm where FSX is installed. However... FSX is actually located on a 300gb partition. The 300gigabyte partition that only holds FSX software uses a total of 57gigabyte of actual space. In total I have the windows part…

A word of warning. Beware of getting this virus/malware----TPS.Ink---- into your system. Out of the blue it infected my system this morning as it hijacked my blank browser homepage. It then displays a webpage all in Chinese. It then takes over and disables access to the Registry,---- which was working fine yesterday,------ if one tries to remove it from there. It sits in the Startup folder and all efforts to remove it via CCleaner proved useless. It sits on the desktop as a Browser icon(in my case Firefox) with garbled letters. Try to delete it and it just self-resurrects in another spot on the desktop. I thought I had Windows Security Essential running in the backgro…

Hi,I am trying to track down exactly why the Level-D 767 and PMDG 747-400 (perhaps others, but those are the two I am having problems with) will not work properly on my new PC (specs as per signature at the foot of this post). I know I am not the only one who has this problem - FS goes to a black screen when you open PMDG or Level-D menus from the FS menu bar. But is it Windows 7, or is it the 64-bit environment (same problems in XP 64-bit??), or an nVidia issue?I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who has either of these a/c installed and has no problems accessing and setting the menus (black screens). What are the specs of your machine? Likewise, if anyone has the…

Earlier today I foolishly used a program called Uniblue to update outdated drivers on my computer. The updates went fine, until a few minutes after the updates had finished, thats when problems started occurring. Errors upon starting FSX such as; FSUIPC error etc. I have attempted many times to restore my computer back to before I had updated all those drivers, in the hopes everything that I had problems with will be back to the way they were this morning. However, upon attempting to restore I am greeted by a window that pops up after restore has finished (not completed) saying: System Restore did not complete successfully. System files and settings were not …

I've had Windows 32 bit on my pc for the past year. Lately, any flight longer than 3 hours crashes fs9. Under XP, there was a window that let you know exactly what the problem was, in the form of an error report. Under windows 7, a window appears saying the problem is being looked into and then the program closes. Frustrating! Eytan

Hi, I currently have a computer for my business that is at a point where the software packages I am currently running for my business are just too taxing on the cpu-mem etc. I had thought about installing all my biz stuff on my fsx win7 box, but needed a way to be able to boot for running biz applications and also boot for fsx when needed. Is there anyway to do this without having 2 os's? I would like to be able to use the one os for everything but of course when booting for fsx it would be of course much leaner. With my biz, I have all sorts of stuff that loads as services etc and it is pretty heavy. Thanks Bob

I have tried to do a search but nothing shows up, so can anyone with the experience, kindly advise. Just bought a Samsung 840 PRO 256Gb SSD. Using Samsung's own 'Samsung Magician', cloned my existing SATA hard drive where my Win 7 Pro OS and FSX sit. I've set the SSD as AHCI as recommended by Samsung; set it as the first boot device, but am not too sure if the OS is booting off the SSD or the HDD as I see two Windows installations when I go from POST. I'm running critically low on the HDD and would like to run FSX and the OS off the SSD. If somebody can kindly guide me to set this up, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

  25. I am finally going to move to Win7 after ordering a Samsung 840 Pro SSD. I know it won't improve frames but if FSX will load faster (that's what I keep reading) it will be worth it. Anyway, right now I have a 2 drive system (both XP 64 bit), FSX on C and everything else on D. To avoid reinstalling FSX (it's grown to over 200gb and would take me weeks to do), I plan on copying it to the SSD. I read somewhere that as long as I change the drive letter of the SSD after everything is moved and the "C" HHD is removed, Windows will know where to find it. However, if FSX is currently installed in C/program files/FSX and I plan on installing it in C/FSX on the SSD, is that going …
