I have a 2 year old i9-9900K (8 core) CPU, overclocked to 5 GHz. Going back, it was always a best practice with FSX or P3D v3/4 to disable hyperthreading. Performance was usually better without the virtual cores and associated overhead. I'm seeing some posts on the MSFS 2020 official forum alluding to benefit from hyperthreading, but only up to 6 cores. The advice there seems to be to disable it for 8 (or more) cores. Anyone have any concrete (or even anecdotal) benchmarks or testing that shows whether or not enabling hyperthreading is a net benefit with an 8 core i9 and MSFS 2020?

When I built my current rig nearly two years ago I was torn between the just released 9900K and the slightly older 8086K. I had actually taken delivery of the 8086K when the 9900K was announced. I promptly RMA'd the 8086K and an 8th gen MB and waited for the 9900K release. However once released there was a lot of discussion on this and other forums regarding high temps with the 9900K so I wimped out of that and reordered the 8086K mainly because it seemed I would be assured of at least 5ghz on all 6 cores at reasonable temps - and this has proven to be the case. I also purchased the high end (at the time) 9th gen ASUS extreme MB. I did reason with myself that I coul…

Hello all, After many, many months of weighing the pros and cons I decided to purchase most of a system today. My Alienware aurora r5 nears end of life and it was time to upgrade. Surprisingly my older daughter (12) is very keen to help assemble the new tech which was a big encouragement to get going! I purchased the following: i7-10700k, MSI MPG z490 gaming plus, Corsair 32-3200mhz, Phantek P500A case and 2x 1200rpm 140mm be quiet fans and 1X 1600rpm 140mm fan as well as a be quiet dark rock slim cooler. I went into the store 100% sure on the cpu and memory. The salesman talked me through the cooling and motherboard. In all of the excitement …

Hi Guys' I would like a to know if I am missing any tricks with this new PC I am ordering hopefully at 2pm 17th when the 3080 go live here in the UK. I have used their PC's for the last 10 year and never had any problems at all, and I like they come overclock and never let me down. But before I go ahead I thought I would ask you gurus for anything I might want to add. I am changing the RAM to 32GB https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team-group-8pack-edition-32gb-2x16gb-ddr4-pc4-25600c14-3200mhz-dual-channel-kit-my-003-8p.html Adding a 2nd M.2 for MSFS/P3D https://www.overclockers.co.uk/samsung-970-evo-plus-1tb-m.2-2280-pci-e-3.0-x4-nvme-soli…

Hello all, I'm looking into potentially upgrading my rig. My motivation is upgraded performance in P3Dv5 and MSFS. While I still run P3Dv4 exclusively, I see myself moving over to v5 when 5.1 lands, and so don't see myself focusing on v4 anymore. As I understand it, all platforms will make use of a faster CPU, but it's mostly v5 and MSFS that will be happy with a better GPU. I currently have an i5-8600K (OC to 4.8GHz) paired with a RTX1070 and 16GB of DDR4 3200 RAM. I run at 1080p, nothing fancy, and am also not really willing to go higher than that. I have no interest in VR for the time being. This works well in smaller airports and holds its own surprisingly w…

Hi, I bought a Samsung 1 TB external SSD. What I'd like to know is, since my computer won't take anything bigger than a 500GB internal SSD, what would the degradation of speed be over a USB cable? Thanks, Ed Kammerman

Here's CPU performance of my 10700k running MSFS 2020 flying from KBUR to KSAN, which is a flight path nearly right over download Los Angeles, CA. The results of three flights are given below, all were made using the same few clouds static weather setting and time of day, and using the Windows 10 Balanced power plan. The three plots were snapped close within vicinity of downtown LA. The MSFS 2020 graphic settings were nearly full Ultra, other than both LODs at 150, and Clouds and Textures at High. See my specs in my sig, using 30 fps external lock. The first run was made using completely stock bios settings. The second's only bios changes were an all core 47 ratio (a…

So I am running the good ol' 4790K, clocked at 4.6Ghz. The new 10700K seems to be the ideal CPU for MSFS (the 10900K has more cores, but MSFS doesn't utilize them). I've been looking at https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html for single core performance, the single most important factor in flight simulation. 4790K @ 4.0 = 2.47 Performance points. 10700K @ 3.8 = 3.08 Performance points. That's a performance increase by 25% (not considering my overclock, or the 10700K's turbo speeds up to 5+Ghz), or in other words, if you get 25FPS at a situation in MSFS, the new CPU would run that with 31FPS. While that represents just the increase you need to k…

As AnandTech reports, Seagate has confirmed it plans to ship an 18TB hard drive in the first half of 2020 followed by a 20TB drive in the second half of the year. Might be a good option for MSFS 2020 if you want to cache large scenery areas, if the cost isn't prohibitive? Cheers Martin

Hello, I have the card mentionned in the tilte and would have 2 questions: - I updated the Bios downloading the one available on the Asus website for the ASUS MAXIMUS XI HERO (WIFI) (version 1602) because under the ASUS MAXIMUS XI HERO (WIFI) Call of Duty edition, there was only the 1401 version as the most recent... it works but I wonder if there was a reason why Asus only propose the 1401 under the Call of Duty edition list ? - I tried to change the logo (I don't want to have this Call of Duty logo when I boot up the PC) but using the EZUpdate utility and choosing a PNG image flashing both Bios versions (1401 or 1602), the update went OK but …

Any thoughts of an advantage in using a more expensive I9 10850K, or even a more expensive I9 10900K, over the more reasonably priced I7 10700K? Will the addition of 2 cores really Matter in MSFS? The CPU speeds don't look that different running on Liquid Cooled system. I'm looking at building my next system and so far I have ordered: BeQuiet Dark Base 700 Case. Intel 2TB M.2 NVME SSD Game Max 850 Watt Gold Power Supply Corsair Vengeance 32GB 3600 DDR4 RAM (4X8GB) Enermax Aquafusion 240 AIO Liquid cooler Still considering : Gigabyte Aorus Pro AX Z490 Motherboard I7 or I9 10th gen CPU RTX 3080TI or RTX 3090. Primarily I want the mobo to provide a good basis for the CPU overclock, grateful for any comments/thoughts as to other pluses/minuses apart from the price differential above? Cheers K

Well, I couldn't resist the urge for a pre-P3D5/MSFS upgrade when I saw my local MicroCenter suddenly had both the i9-10900K and the ASUS Maximus XII Hero in stock. With Coronamania making fun a prohibited maneuver, what's a guy to do with his cash, anyway? I migrated my ~2 year old Z390 Maximus XI Hero Z390 and 5.3 GHz six-core 8086K system to a Z490 Maximus XII Hero and a (so far) 5.2 GHz 10-core i9-10900K. I have been waiting to make the jump to P3Dv5, and of course there's that new MSFS right around the corner as well. But from my observations of the 9900K I have on my portable rig and the 8086K, I'm convinced that adding 67% more cores as long as I don't have…

Hello, Thank you everybody for their comments to my new build. I finally bought everything, with the exception of the RTX 3090 which I am waiting for. in the mean time I can use my 1080 Ti. I am planning on using this for P3DV5 and MFSF 2020 I finally bought the following Case - Thermaltake Vie 51 Full tower - It is huge, but will allow for ample cooling Mobo - Asus Maximus XII CPU - Intel i9-10850k - I guess the performance difference with the 10900K does not justify the $300 in price. CPU Cooler - Corsair Icue h150i Pro Xt 360mm PSU - EVGA 750 Gt. - I am not sure if it will be enough for the 3090, but I have another two PSUs tha…
