AnandTech already have a review of the i7-11700K up, using a retail model not bound by NDA. https://www.anandtech.com/show/16535/intel-core-i7-11700k-review-blasting-off-with-rocket-lake Despite the claimed 19% IPC uplift, gaming performance on Rocket Lake is deeply disappointing, losing to Comet Lake and even to Coffee Lake in some cases. It also consumes up to double the power of the 5800X, while not performing as well. The reason for these regressions seems to be the increased L3 cache latency, probably due to the difficulties of backporting Sunny Cove to the 14nm process, and with just 16MB of cache (compared to Vermeer's 32MB),…

Just bought a new computer and I'm trying to overclock i9-10900K but I stumbled upon a strange issue I just can't figure it out on my own. I can get a stable 5.1GHz OC without any issues. The temps when stress testing (prime95, OCCT, Cinebench, etc) are in the mid 60s! That's really low, right? The issue is that there's no way I can get 5.2GHz, it immediately gives me BSOD after leaving BIOS, every time, even if I up the voltages to 1.400. I'm really confused because it appears I still have a lot of room temperatures-wise but I don't think it would be ok to go above 1.400 with voltages or am I wrong? Can I or should I even? I didn't try higher numbers because if I won't u…

Is it possible that an unstable overclock (not enough/ too much voltage) is affecting my sim performance? Doing a manual overclock to 5.2ghz, my sim fps dropped to the low 20's. When I restored to bio's default for the i9-10900k, my sim when right back to 40fps with the default intel turbo settings. I did do some benchmark testing and I never got a blue screen, but obviously something was off because of my low performance in the sim.

what would be the best way to overclock the 5900x for MSFS2020? PBO or an all core overclock? Also my motherboard has Dynamic overclock switching, anyone already has this up and running for msfs2020?

So I finally finished my system, I'm super happy, I'll post a separate thread about it as it's really pretty xD. Anyhow I did not overclock anything or enable XMP, I'm interested in doing it but I want to do some testing before hand including FPS, CPU/GPU usage, Wattage & FPS counter (I have FRAPS installed). Right now I'm running at 1440p with low 50's on average & high 30's in dense areas like Seattle. My RAM in the bios is currently at 2133 MHz but it's actually 3600Mhz CL16. Any tips on free sotware or even with a full free trial would be awesome 🙂

I have 16Gb of DDR4-2666 RAM installed on two of four slots. If I wanted to increase to 32Gb would it be better to buy 2 x 8Gb Sticks of DDR4-2666 and put those in the remaining two slots or buy 2 X 16Gb Sticks of DDR4-2666? will the memory work just as well over 4 sticks as 2? I am not sure how to find out if it is possible to use 3000mhz or higher sticks, I have looked in Bios (American Megatrends R01-80) but cannot see a way to increase it

The sim CPU we've been waiting for(?) has officially been announced. What we know: https://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2021/03/16/intel-announces-11th-gen-core-i9-11900k-i7-11700k-and-i5-11600k-desktop-cpu-details-and-pricing/ "the Core i9-11900K, which will have a peak boost frequency of 5.3GHz and all-core frequency of 4.8GHz, will have a launch price of $539, which is around $60 more than the Core i9-10900K." "the Core i9-11900K has eight cores and 16 threads, which is two fewer cores than the Core i9-10900K. The reason for this is that the Cypress Cove architecture used in the new CPUs is based upon the new Sunny Cove architecture used in its …

Have a Ryzen 5 3600, Asus Motherboard, with 8 gigs of Adata XPG DDR4 3000. I have 16 gigabytes of the same on order. Would I get best by only install one extra stick and holding on to the other one until I can buy only a single 8 gig stick to pair with it or would I do best just installing both for 24 gig total but only 16 gig paired? Thanks.

I'm finally going to replace my old 4790K and GTX1070. I know about the shortages but want to get in line. My choice has come down to either the AMD5900X or (when released later this month) the Intel 11900K for a CPU. My choice for video card has been narrowed down to either the AMD RX6800XT and the nVidia RTX3080. The large amount of VRAM in the Radeon pushes me in that direction as I think it won't be long before 10GB isn't enough. There may be a 3080Ti coming about mid-April (if the strong rumors are correct) which may be worth waiting for as I have had nVidia cards for a long time. I've had the money burning hole in my pocket for the past year (we caught Co…

Maybe just bad luck, but with three boards received DOA, you've got to wonder, I bought the Aorus B550i pro AX for my mini ITX build: - First board had a broken Nvme standoff making it impossible to secure the PCIE 4 SSD - Board 2 was completely DOA, couldn't even start the PSU - Board 3 started but on board RGB was not working & the Q Flashback button wasn't working so couldn't flash BIOS with my 5600x (don't have another AM4 CPU) All in all really disappointedf because it seems like the best ITX board in the B550 category, I bought the MSI MPG Gaming Edge wifi which will arrive today but between that & my Be Quiet SFX PSU being also DOA, I am…

Greetings all, I am playing with OC on my i9-9900K ROG Z390E. I'm using ASUS ROG's AI tools to OC. However, I have been experiencing BSDs that can't explain. I finally caught one of the messages while running a stress test using Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility running the AVX test for 30 minutes. This was the BSD's error code, which I captured using the QR code: IRQL_not_less_or_equal Here's MS's report on fixing it: How to fix Error 0xA: IRQL_not_less_or_equal (microsoft.com) It was interesting that the anti-virus was pinged as a possible cause. Does AV software affect overclocking? After the crash, ASUS AI throttled the OC from 41% (500…

If there is an existing guide here that I haven't found, point me the way. That said... The last pc I built was a 486. Things were so much simpler then. I am clueless on current hardware. I want to play FS2020 at a decent quality level with a frame-rate that is smooth. Want to keep it under $2000. Part of this is to keep me satisfied enough that the urge to get back into the much more expensive real thing is kept in check😀. Things I don't want, but perhaps you can change my mind.... I'd rather avoid water cooling, unless you can convince me it's worth it and/or not the hassle I'm afraid it would be. I would like to avoid overclocking unless its l…

I run MSFS on an iMac 2017 with a built in Radeon Pro 580 GPU. Actually, I am satisfied with the performance and everything runs really stable in the meantime. However, I am worried that the permanently high temperature of 95 degrees Celsius might damage the GPU over time. In addition, the fan runs at its maximum speed of 2700 rpm while flying. I’m less bothered by the loud fan noise, but I’m not sure if the continuous load could damage the computer in the long run. I don’t have any other application (neither on MacOS nor under Boot Camp) that puts so much load on the GPU. Or am I worrying for nothing and the design of the computer ensures that it throttles down…

Hi I purchased a SFX Power Supply. SFX L Power Be quiet 600W to be exact. The unit is brand new & I'm unable to make it work. I tried the paperclip test, nothing... The fan spools up for a quarter second & then shuts down, I hear a click when it starts, but nothing. Any tips? Am I faced with a DOA unit? Thanks

Hello. As described already in my VR-related thread ( https://www.avsim.com/forums/forum/796-virtual-reality-vr-hardware-and-games/ ), performance of my 10900kf is pretty underwhelming. I don't know why, but due to whatever reason, it seems to be overclocked on as Windows basis: Task Manager shows me a base speed of 3.7 and a current speed of 4.9GHz. CPU-Z shows the same figures. Maybe that's due to the fact that MSI Dragon-Center was installed from the manufacturer. BIOS shows a clockspeed of only 3.7GHz, so somethings going on here on a WIN10 level. Today I've performed a PassMark CPU Test and attained a Mark of about 20.000. This seems to be well b…

I'd like to buy or build a new computer for FS2020 to run the A320NX addon for real world "study" practice (I fly the A320 in real life). I've seen various videos of it and I'm impressed with the level of systems modeling (vital). Frame rate is vital, and I'm sure the A320NX's systems modeling will destroy any hardware. I have a 4K TV that I would connect this to and high resolution is important for simulation (1080p, 1440p would be inadequate). I haven't built a computer in 15 yrs so my knowledge level is non-existent at this point. I can follow directions but I have no practical knowledge with any hiccups that could occur from custom builds. If building a cust…

I need a new PC because my current one refuses to run MSFS anymore. Now I'd like to keep my current 1080p monitor which suits me fine. This will also enable me to get a bettter CPU, GPU, power unit, etc. Problem is that information about systems that are geared to 1080p almost always are low budget all the way. So they show a cheaper CPU, a cheaper GPU, etc. But... I want a TOP OF THE BILL PC that can run MSFS on 1080p on ultra without any problems! Now the obvious advice might be to get the fastest CPU and GPU anyway but from what I've read so far it is clear that the fastest CPU and GPU will NOT result in the smoothest 1080p performance...! It may even degrade perf…

About one week ago I bought a new custom build computer. Yesterday I started hearing this constant noise that appears the moment the computer is powered on and goes away the moment it shuts down. The noise is not loud, it's constant pitch and never changes. Since I heard it I can not un-hear it. It's definitely not the fans, I'm 100% of that and I don't have any HDDs (only SSDs) but I actually can't locate it, probably because of the echo in the case, it's just everywhere in the case, if I had to guess I'd say somewhere around CPU. Here's my dilemma. Maybe this was there from the beginning and I just didn't hear it before. Maybe it's normal. On the other hand, maybe it ac…

Warning: this is a rant. I'm outraged because ASUS and Intel downgraded my laptop CPU speed to 2.3 GHz because of a not-so-widely-known vulnerability. Now I can´t keep 30 FPS in P3D4. Consider this line as a TL;DR. Now, the long version: as I may have explained (and possibly preached) before, I set up my laptop CPU (an i5-8300H, other specs in signature) with ThrottleStop, in order to limit Turbo Boost to 3.6 GHz instead of 4.0 GHz, and I also undervolted it. Thus, I can limit temperatures to 75°C in either FS9, FSX or P3D while keeping 30 FPS in these sims (using RTSS). I could have my cake and eat it too. Yesterday I had some sound issues. Since reinsta…

I I was in Microcenter earlier and an associate was helping me with some questions with MSFS2020 in particular. He mentioned upgrading my CPU won’t help FPS and game quality all that much knowing my setup. I know upgrading the GPU will help exponentially, but is leaving my current CPU alone the right thing to do? Avg 20FPS and slight stuttering is killing me!! Here is my current setup: Intel i5-10400K 5 fans for air cooling GeForce 1660 Super 32GB DDR4-2666 As rock Pro4/ac board (When I can get my hands on a better GPU I am definitely picking it up) But would upgrading to an i9 or even i7 help? was in Microcenter earlier and an associate w…

I am considering transferring FS2020 to a Samsung 1 tb SSD drive. Currently, my Steam Library is on an older E Drive. So I would copy the complete Steam Library to the SSD drive, and delete same on E Drive? Question: How do I get Windows 10 to point to the new SSD drive (for MS2020) instead of the E drive ? Can the SSD drive be connected via USB (External) or does it have to be installed into my PC ? Thanks in advance.
