I currently have the "upgrade itch" - and I´ll skip Ivy, and won´t wait for whatever is next. Does anyone have experience upgrading from an i5 2500K to the i7 2700K? The extra 2 Mb cache might be good for FSX I guess..?

Hello All, I have never used liquid cooling before. Please excuse my ignorance but is it much better than a top shelf radiator with push-pull fans? I am looking at overclocking an IvyB to 4.5-4.6 GHz. Secondly, since my last rebuild 3 years ago, there seems to be a new kid on the block in terms of mobos. I have never heard of AS Rock before. How do they compare with the likes of ASUS for a Z77 based board? Finally is there much difference in terms of performance in FSX between the i5 3570K and the i7 3770K. Both are rated at 3.4 GHz. With my limited knowledge, I don't even know the difference between i5 and i7. Thanks, Steve.

Hi Just recently upgraded my machine (added 7870 and SSD) a bit to start playing FSX agian (stopped playing for a while but back into it agian). I only use this machine for FSX. I am wanting to run it with everything maxed out, it pretty much can do this but it still does struggle sometimes with low framerate/jittering over complex terrain. I am running REX and ORBX ftx Australia Current setup i7 920 OC'd to 4.2Ghz (On air with Coolermaster 812) GA-EX58-UD3R 6GB 1333Mhz GEIL RAM SAPPHIRE 7870 OC 2GB Thermaltake 750W PSU Antec 900 case Kingston 120GB SSD (Win 7 ult and FSX only) Is this setup just not capable? Hello, This seems a rather dumb question from somebody who's involved in flightsimming for more than 20 years. But the question stands as it is. Is there a penalty (smoothness, framerates, stutters....) for installing FSX on the same drive and partition as the operating system? I did so the last time I reinstalled and with only a fraction of the aircraft and scenery installed, I still can't get a smooth ride (following the guidelines from Word Not Allowed). The only two thing I have changed are the harddrive (smaller from 1Tb to 500GB but both with 32 Mb cache and 7200 RPM) and a new graphics card (from a standard GTX-580 to a GTX-670 FTW, both from EVGA) …

I haven't ordered the system yet but would like your comments about the system below, this system is going to cost around $4700 I just want somthing that will be trouble free and be able to run smooth and fast (like we all want really) Im sick of my current system pausing going blurry and having poor FPS. this is my proposed system, can you see any problems with any of the parts ? can you see anything th…

  10. I know, it's not really the latest hardware which I have, but still, one of the more expensive ones: Intel Core i7 2600k 3.40 (OC'd at 5.15GHz) GTX 590 and GTX 580 8GB DDR RAM Asus P8Z77-V surely not the worst hardware either, but look what I get with this system: yup, 6fps, wouldn't really care actually, but I see more and more people with average hardware, computers that cost 1000€, reporting framerates around 30-50fps, and I'm getting 10-14fps <_<

I was recently doing a little maintenance on my PC and came across a Windows Vista / 7 feature called ReadyBoost. This feature allows for either a USB Memory Stick / Card to be used by the system as a data cache. The full details for ReadyBoost can be found here. ReadyBoost. As I had a 8GB card, of sufficient spec, lying around I decided to give it a go. While I can't give figures as to how it has improved the general performance of my PC it just responds that little bit quicker and "feels" a little sharper. Worth a shot if you have a spare memory card - tip format it with the NTFS option. Good luck.

  16. I remember back in the days, having a dedicated soundcard was a MUST, as we tried to offload as much as we could from our CPUs. With the processing power we have available nowadays, is this still relevant? And let's be clear, I'm talking about us flightsimmers, because I know for the audiophile who demand the best in quality, dedicated soundcards are a no-brainer. But when it comes to flightsimming, is it enough to simply use the onboard audio? I have a Creative Labs PCI-E X-fi Extreme Music and it's plagued with the hissing/popping that so many people have always experienced and I was wondering if it would be better to just use the onboard audio. I'm just worried tha…

This will be my first custom build and I want to find a unique case to fit my needs. I live in Ireland which in my opinion is the worst country to find Hardware for gaming PC's. My question is... Does anyone know of any good unique cases on trusted sites? Iv'e had a look at Amazon but I would like a better selection. Regards, Ciaran.

I know there are differences bewteen 3rd floor and my previews basement which was about 21C all year around. Both with computer on and off. Now it's different. Ambient about 23C with computer off. turning it on and it rises to about 25-26C. It may not sound like the worlds biggest problem, but it is slightly annoying. Especially in the summer. Computer heating up the room and thus the CPU gets hotter. Right now I'm using aircooling, but I've been thinking going full water cooling with as big a radiator I can get. The theory is I can dela…

  22. Folks, I foolishly bought a dedicated 120GB SSD drive thinking that would be sufficent for FSX. Boy was I wrong! Can I add a second drive that just holds additional add-ons and such? If so, will this induce any latency in running the sim? I have a 250GB Velociraptor drive I could use, but I'm open to buying a second SSD if that makes sense. Please let me know your thoughts on if this is possible. Thanks! Will

  23. I’ve long wanted to know how much different CPU architectures and cache sizes affect FSX. What’s needed is a benchmark that takes clock frequency, GPU, PCIe bus, RAM, and storage out of the equation. I think I’ve come up with such a benchmark. By making sure everyone is using the same clock frequency and RAM speeds regardless of CPU we can get rid of them as a factor. By closing down FSX fully between each run (Ctrl+C) and excluding the first run we can get rid of most of the effects different storage might have. Finally we need settings and a benchmark flight path that is fully CPU bond at these settings and not affected by the GPU or the PCIe bus it’s conne…

Hi, Over the next few months, I will be making the transition to a full SSD system. I plan on using a 240GB main drive for my OS and programs and using my 120GB ADATA SSD[already own it] for FSX. I am really overwhelmed with the market being flooded with so many choices and so many brands. I really need a bit of an SSD 'compass' on what I need to look for. I would appreciate it if you guys could give me some ideas on what kind of drive I should be looking for. The three things that are most important to me are this: -VERY Reliable [i can't have glitchy firmware...Needs TRIM...Lots of write cycles...etc] -Speed, I would prefer a newer SATAIII drive, but I …
