  1. Dear Simmers, I've been reading a lot of information regarding tips and tricks to get the most out of FSX. To be honest it gets very confusing as there's too many opinions differing from each other. I recently got a very nice built but it seems my specs aren't enough to get the most out of FSX without doing additional tweaking or tuning. My CPU: - PROCESSOR:Intel Core i7-990X BX80613I7990X Processor Extreme Edition - Six Core, 12MB L3 Cache, 1.5MB L2 Cache, 3.46 GHz (3.73 GHz Max Turbo). - MOTHERBOARD: GIGABYTE G1.Assassin Intel X58 Motherboard - ATX, Socket B (LGA1366), Intel X58 Chipset, 2200MHz DDR3, SATA 6.0 Gb/s, RAID, 7.1-CH Audio, CrossFireX/SLI Ready, Gig…

  2. Hello All If I were to buy a new computer ,It would probably come with windows 7 (or whatever the current OS at the time I may buy) My question could I take my current hard drive which has WINDOWS XP installed and of course my current FS9 setup as well ,and install that into any new PC and use that as a second drive so that I could continue to use XP and FS . I am more than happy with XP and would rather go on using it ,than face all the potential hassle of getting FS9 up and running with a new OS. Cheers Andy

As above. I've killed my i7-870 so I'm looking to replace it with something with little (or no) overclocking. I want the best out-of-the-box performance as such. Should I go IvyBridge or SandyBridge? And how do the SandyBridge-E processors fit into this? Would a SB i7-3820 3.6GHz be better than a SB i7-2700K 3.5GHz? This is purely and FSX machine, I have no other games!

Hello all. Hard for me to believe this, but I've been out of the loop in the FS world for a couple of years. I'm building a new rig, and I'm going to do something I've enjoyed since I was a 12 year old kid running FS2 -- and that is -- fly a little. I was also a habitual FS tweaker, so I always felt at home here in the AVSIM Hardware forum. I think this is a good tech forum, compared to most, which is a tribute to all of you. I'll be playing a lot of catch-up, as some things have changed, others have not since 08-09. First question, has this "nVidia Inspector" program largely (or completely?) supplanted nHancer? nHancer was quite useful back then. Only comp…

  5. I am finally getting around to installing my Corsair H60 water cooler into a P8/P76 ASUS system. I note that the CPU fan connector on the mobo has 4 pins, but the pump connector on the heat exchanger (that replaces the CPU fan and mounts onto the CPU) only has 3 pins. My understanding is that a 4-pin connection has the ability to control the speed as well as power the device. is this going to be a concern when installing the water cooler? I also note that the radiator fan has a 4-pin connector. I will be able to connect this to one of the chassis fan connections that has a 4-pin socket on the mono, so that part of the electrical hookup should work fine. Thanks…

Here's a new one lol. I'm going to a relative's house for a few months and am thinking of bringing my fsx computer as I'm going to have a lot of time. I have the original shipping boxes for the monitor and case so can just ship it on the airline as extra baggage. The computer has an H100 cooler. Should I take this off or should it be fine as is? Any other considerations? I would open it up once it got there to make sure cards hadn't shifted or anything...

Hello everyone, I have some extra cash to build a new rig and have some questions. My current PC is not bad but everyone keeps saying I can get more performance out of an intel setup so I wanted to ask is it really worth it? I currently have my AMD phenom ii 965 BE OC to 3.8GHz and it runs FSX with a lot of eye candy and other adds such as the PMDG 747 decent. I average about 16-18FPS on the ground and 28 in the sky with frames locked at 30. Obviously if I switch to Intel I will have to reload everything and start over but I am willing to is it is really worth it. If I do I will sell my current system to recoup some of the cost. So at the moment I have 1200 to spend on a …

  8. Forgive me if this seems like a bit of a stupid question. I've searched the internet and nowhere seems to be giving me a straight answer! Basically, I have 2 hard drives, 500GB and a 160GB. The 500gb is 7200rpm 6gb/s. The 160 is 5400rpm 3gb/s. My windows 7 64bit is installed on the 500. I want to install fsx on the smaller hard drive so that it doesn't interfere with any of the other files, but in order to do this, do I need to have windows installed on it? At the moment the smaller hard drive has no OS, so I'm wondering if FSX will still run. If not, can I just create a partition from the larger hard drive and use that? Thanks

In order to be prepared for the next Ivy generation I recently buildt a new system with a budget i7 3820 CPU (o/c to 5GHz!) on a LGA 2011 platform. Following Kostas guide in nearly every point (FSX and hardware settings), I've got now the best FSX I ever had. It works smooth like silk and micro-stutters occur only rarely. I just finished a flight with LDs 767 from Chicago (AS_US-Cities) KORD(FSDT) to KLAX(FSDT). During T/O and landing I got smooth(!) 18-20 FPS (MTX AI traffic @ 21/8). Only difference to Kostas settings was, that for T/O, I set the internal FPS control to unlimited which suprisingly did not result in stutters/texture glitches (as on my former system) w…

Hi everyone it's been a couple years since I've upgraded my PC and am hoping to do so in the coming months, I'm looking at building my own or if I can find a great deal will be glad to purchase a machine already built. After quickly searching craigslist for anything I came across this particular post: http://lasvegas.crai...3091058873.html It sounds like an amazing deal and the owner who clearly took a lot of time to list the systems attributes sounds like a pretty trustworthy guy stating he served in the military and his past experience creating machines. Anyways I was wondering if someone could give some information on how this particular system would handle FSX and …

  16. Question in title. Get technical if you must. But I must say it seems very odd to me. I don't usually fly in circles and I suspect the O/S caches something that runs 2 - 4 get to use? FSMark11 is a fantastic resource when planning an upgrade (as I am right now), thanks to all who contributed. And thanks Kostas for the guide - helped a lot so far to pick my new components. Sorry if this has been explained somewhere - I have spent hours looking here. I thought an SSD would have helped the first run times, but from reading SSD posts here it seems not. Thinking of skipping the SSD. Tom

Hi Guys, After having 2 great years with my I7 920 CPU, I've decided it was time to upgrade to some Ivy Bridge action. I've based it on the idea that I want to get FSX as slick as possible and also have a Solid machine for X-plane 10 as it grows I've read some very good posts in here which have helped cement my decision. It wont be anything you havent already seen, but I'll be posting up my FSmark2011 scores and maybe a video showing how It went together, how I overclocked it and also then how I applied alot of the tweaks in Word Not Allowed's FSX setup post. I'm also using some original parts from my current setup to help keep my costs down. New parts -…

Its not actually too bad and has a dual core 2.4GHz E4500 and 256mb GPU, not great but worked for FSX until I got my current beast. I was wondering is there anything that I can do to increase performance on my main machine by having this one take care of a few things, like in a network? Thanks,

Hey guys, I finally have the money - taken a good year - and am about to pull the trigger on the new rig, well the only rig really - the other one blew up about two years ago!... so anyway its obviously changed since I last mentioned it (that was about 7 months ago) Any tweaks or thoughts would be good - I'd say its fairly high end - but not max as I don't have the budget for that! So its now an Ivybridge I7 3770 3.5 overclocked to 4.5GHz and stress tested at that setting - spoke to overclockers and the chap said that this wasnt the max but in order for longevity of the processor they didn't go higher. System Specification - Case: NZXT Phantom Enthusi…
