Remember my C-47 Arkia repaint?Well, I found this picture on airliners.net, it wasn't there when I first painted her.http://www.airliners.net/open.file/743811/LYou can see here two things:1. My paint with the metallic bottom (rather than matte painted) is more authentic than the real example on display today.2. The 4X-ADA had engines with no scoops. So I am thinking of reproducing my work on 4X-AES and do the 4X-ADA, but this time use the C47 model (OY-BPB). It has no scoops on engines, aerodome, correct door types (though Arkia has no stairs attached) and correct seating. So it seems the best model to do 4X-ADA with. What do you think? (there is a slight problem though, 4X…

A couple questions have been asked about the various types and sizes of DC-3/C-47/R4D engine air intake scoops atop the nacelles. To alleviate the confusion, including my own, I went to our subject matter expert, Captain Russ Strine, MAAM President, chief pilot, and restorer of the R4D. I asked Russ, "There seems to be a difference of opinion in the R4D/DC-3 fan community that perhaps you can settle. One theory says the long scoops are "high blower" scoops and since civil DC-3's were not allowed to use high blower, they are not seen on post-war Douglas's. Others think they have to do with the particular model of the 1830 installed. Also, why are the long ones called "…

Hi Guys, here is a question to the gauge wizard (He Bill, are you there ?)I tried to play with true FS controls (Toggle_Feather_switch_1 and Toggle_Feather_switch_2) using FSUIPC but alas to no avail. The feathering push buttons on the overhead electrical panel of the R4D won't move. So what are the offsets used to control these switches ?TIAFrancois

Hey,I was watching a documentary last night about a flight of five Avengers which disappeared off the coast of Florida (Bermuda triangle) on a training mission in the 40's. Anyone see it? Recently they found five aircraft (all Avengers) flaps down in the ditching cfg on the ocean bed in the correct location and naturally assumed they'd found the ill-fated flight. Tail numbers, however, proved that the five aircraft weren't connected with the lost flight and they were all identified as known isolated casualties in the area! What about that? Five lost, five found, and all in the 'right' place, and yet no relation to one another? Blimey, talk about stranger than fiction... …

This has always been a "problem" area for me. How does a pilot know he has his mixture set correctly? Before I purchased the MAAM-SIM R4D-DC3 I used Tim's panel in the (highly modified) FS9 default DC3. I had a fuel flow gauge that would help with the setting of the mixture. Now that I'm flying the MAAM AC, which has no fuel flow gauge, what does a pilot look at, as far as instruments, to determine if his mixture is set correctly? This has been an ongoing question for me with all piston aircraft...what tells the pilot that his mixture is set correctly? On various AC's I've used EGT gauges, Cylinder head temp. etc., never really knowing what I was doing. What would a REAL …

  7. Although I have Mark's excellent DXT3 replacement textures for all the DC3 Airways AC's, I was wondering if it would be possible to get the same done for the MAAM-SIM defaults (including the OY-BPB)? I use DXT3's at every possible opportunity...not just online in MP. I find the wait for the 32 bits to load..."annoying"...to say the least. Yes it only takes 1-2 seconds (on my system)...but that is too long for a "Non-eye candy" guy, like myself. When I look out the window, I don't want to wait to see what's going on. I have resaved textures before, using DXTbmp.exe...with mixed results. Not being a repaint guru, I prefer the experts do it, if possible. Is anyone planning, …

  8. After some help from Mark I've found a solution (albeit very weird) that allows me to start the MAAM-SIM DC3 engines manually. As long as I have a small "Spot View" window open, as well as the main panel, the engines will manually start. It's strange...but if that's what it takes...OK. I would still like to know if anybody has an inkling of why this is and is there a way to make this little manual start requirement go away? Thanks. Vic

Hello all,I've already posted this at The DC-3 Airways Forum but I thought I'd throw it in here also. Some where I read the solution to this problem but I can now no longer remember where...it's #### getting old!Problem: When ever the Sperry autopilot is engaged on the MAAM DC-3/R4D (FS2004 version)and I try to make a small heading correction, say one or two degrees using either the heading bug on the directional gyro or the heading knob on the Sperry autopilot the unit, followed immediately by the plane, turns a minimum of ten degrees in the direction called for with a passenger horrifying lurch. With the auto pilot disengaged I have no problem reseting very small corr…

Greetings. I downloaded this repaint and thought I had done all that was needed to get it into the hangar but it does not show up. I added it to the cargo model and the passenger one for good measure as well but no joy, so any advice would be welcome. I have the feeling there is something in the cfg text that is not quite right- should the ui variation be something else, for example? Anyway, all thoughts gratefully recieved! Andy.

Hi Bill,I have a couple of questions regarding the WW 2 Weekend coming up. I live about 275 miles from the museum and really would like to find out some things about the area and the show itself. I will most likely leave Friday after work and travel most of the way there (if not all the way). What motels are close by and do they fill up during the weekend of the show? Is it better to stay somewhere a few miles away from the show? I know the show is from June 3-5, but is one day better than the other? Obviously this is my first time attending and I really don't want to miss anything. I am really looking foward to this (even have the wife and kids excited about it). I've be…

Greetings.I'm inactively in and out of this group from time to time but haven't seen this subject discussed before. The MAAM-Sim DC-3 is a wonderful model, but I do feel the one thing that lets it down is the sound set. From my personal (albeit fairly limited) experience of flight by DC-3, I would suggest that the sounds for the aircraft idling on the ground are 100% spot-on, but as soon as the throttles are opened, the volume drops and it tails off into a watery, muffled sound. This is not what it is like in the real world. The volume should surely increase slightly as the engines open up. On the flight I made last year, I was liucky enough to be able to spend plenty of t…

Is there an R4D-DC3 faq here, like the one for "Briefing Time"? I ask because I received my MAAM-SIM CD, read the manual and watched the videos...and I cannot, for the life of me, get the engines to start manually. "Control+E" will start the engines. I followed the checklist steps for "Starting Engines" but she never fires off. I ask for an FAQ location because the answer is probably there...rather than have you tell "another MAAM newbie" how it's done. I will say that I have tried every possible combination of switches I can think of (Primer, Ignition, Vibrator) to no avail. I am using the 2D cockpit, as I always and forever will. Any info or direction to information is …

Hi,I'm looking for help or advice. I've encountered an occasional problem in which my elevator trim setting is reset to zero (i.e. no down or up trim - neutral).First, some background. I typically fly with FS2004 (FS9.1) in windowed mode, not full-screen mode. The window is maximized. I fly the 2D panel and do not use the VC.It happens like this: after leveling off at cruise altitude, setting cruise power, and trimming for level flight, I click the CP-> icon to go to the co-pilot's view in order to close the cowl flaps. Sometimes when I click the CP-> icon the airplane will balloon up into a steep climb. When this occurs it's because the elevator trim has been reset…

I received my EAGERLY awaited FS2004 CD yesterday, and IMMEDIATELY got to work doing the TAA Sunbird Services repaint I had been wanting to do for YEARS. It is coming along SUPERBLY, and I should have it done in a day or so.ONE PROBLEM: DC-3 Cargo Model. I have to use the DC-3 Cargo version, as all the Sunbird DC-3's were ex-C-47's, with the double side cargo door. So, I loaded my textures to trial into the BEA cargo repaint, when I saw an IMMEDIATE problem - one row too many windows FORWARD of the wing leading edge! It wouldn't annoy most, but it annoys the FASTIDIOUSLY accuacy freak me!So, I tried it in the DC-3 Passenger version, which has the CORRECT number of windows…

Hi all. I love my DC-3 and the wonderful panel - I just miss the overhead panel at the top of the screen - remember the Roy days? I sometimes find it's a bit of overload activating the pop-up window for the overhead panel while I'm working hard. It was nice with the earlier R4D models to have all the buttons and radio's right there at the top. I was wondering whether anyone has put together a 2-D cockpit with the overhead panel built in? I have pieced one together, but it actually involves a FS2K/2K2 version combined with the latest panel, it works, but as you can imagine, is not optimal...Anyone done this - any assistance available?Regards, Ian

Together with B25 "Briefing Time" the R4D/DC3 sets the standard for other designers to aim for. One problem though: I'm having trouble with tuning in ADF channels on the overhead panel. Provided I tune the channel and/or select the radio control panel before starting engines and getting going, the tuning system and radio control panel work as per the manual. Once airborne however I'm not able to tune in any other ADF frequency further along my route - the hot spot for changing the last dig…

Hi all. Is there any way to change the tool tip settings on the R4D? It takes a long time for the tool tip to appear after I have placed the cursor over a gauge, and then the tip is very uniformative. For example, if I place it over any of the buttons on the autopilot, the tool tip only identifies the autopilot but doesn't tell me the function of the particular button. Also, the tool tips don't tell me the numerical reading on any of the gauges as on most other aircraft I own. Thanks for your help!
