Richard Harvey

Lake Tahoe

September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

ChrisThat error is in the Fly slicer, not TS2.The slicer is called from TS2 once the rendering is complete.I'm afraid I can't help with the error message, it means as much to me as it does to you. The slicer is looking for something, and not finding it.Colin

After installing the great NY metro v2 pod and being amazed at all that wonderful airport scenery, I took off from Islip, LI for New Haven with a final stop in Martha's Vineyard. I used VolNav for the flight plan, Infometar for the weather and cfto for ATC. Inevitably, after a few minutes taxiing or in the air , FLY2 crashed. I rembered, way back, discussions on how shared scenery eats memory, even when it's not used. I am only allocating 32 meg(agp aperture) of normal ram for my 128 meg video card, and have never had a lock up or a crash to the desktop. As soon as I removed the NY metro shared scenery , I was able to fly to my destination without a crash. I would like so…

I am putting my upgraded computer to some work with terrascene. I do have a few questions. The first one I may know the answer to. How to I distribute my work? Do I just zip up the folder that TS created in my scenery folder? And last questions, after the POD file is created can I change the name? I named it test.pod and would like the name more descriptive when I distribute it.After I get these questions answered I plan to keep on creating more awsome scenery. I never was able to use TS before with my old clunker, now I have a great respect for what it can do. Good job developers!!!

It is finally out!! the wait is over! There is a utility on the AVSIM library to convert MSFS scenery into FLY II scenery!! I installed the application and I am searching all my HDs for the BGLZIP.EXE file ( a utility to uncompress BGL MSFS scenery files ) in order to start converting the sceneries I have for MSFS 2000 into FLYII sceneries. Finally I will be able to use 3D buildings ( almost photo real ) for my Mexican Airports! THANK YOU PADRAIC MORGAN! I haven't converted yet any scenery, but reading the README.TXT file looks that works very well. We will see..Regards.Javier.

Hello Everyone,I have uploaded the "Dynamic Vehicle Models for TRI - Fly !II ( Version 1/ 10-23-02 )" sampler file to the library - under theMiscellaneous category. This add-on contains 14 different "dynamic models" which can be used to populate an airport. A procedure is included whichdescribes how to make/generate a model from existing information, and how to generate a path for the model. Additionally, thereis a working sample at KBLI - Bellingham International Airport,Bellingham, Washingon ... with 3 moving models around this small airport. I have as of yet not figured out ( or have gottenany response to my previous posting ) with regards to turning "on"the external…

Hi Everyone,Right now C4TO categorizes aircraft as either heavy or not heavy and then restricts runway selections on heavy aircraft to those runways that are 6000 feet or longer. I would like to change this. So, what I need from everyone and anyone who has the knowledge is the minimum runway lengths for takeoff and landing for each aircraft. Please send me as much information as possible. Depending on how detailed the data you guys can supply me with is, I will try to model runway restrictions based on aircraft total weight, airport elevation and weather. The more data the merrier! Cheers, Tony

  19. I crossed my fingers and installed the new Detonator drivers (ver 43.45) last night and to my surprise, the results were quite good. First of all, many of you saw the flickering of textures on the outside view of the aircraft with the previous Detonator driver. This has been fixed with the new version! :) I did some reading and discovered this may have had something to do with texture corruption on the previous driver (especially on GeForce 3 cards). I noticed some new options on the driver optimization/setup. There were wide range of settings for anisotropic filtering. With this filtering turned up along with texture sharpening checked, I get nice views of Terrasce…

I recently reinstalled FlyII with the latest patch and started loving the experience all over again. For some reason I am getting much better framerates (must have been the render.ini tweaks) and it is smooth. One question I have with superquickgen 2.0 is that it really bogs my system down. If I turn it off, everything runs beautifully again. I have downloaded some Terramodel airports, most of which have a ton of buildings and trees, and I don't see much of a performance hit. I am wondering what I am missing? Is there a way to reduce the object polygon count in quickgen or is there a switch or something else I am missing. Robert William…

  21. With the addition of the Toledo area global tile, this TerraScene 2.1 project pack brings the Ohio Project up to 7 tiles. This northwest Ohio area tile centers on Toledo, extending to the east to adjoin the Marblehead tile and into the north into Michigan, picking up Monroe, Adrian and the southern part of Detroit. A portion of Canada and Lake Erie are also included, with the Canadian areas created with low resolution DCW shapefile data.Tiger Census shapefile data update the USGS information to include new water, roadway, and landscape details - all data files, including a custom water mask, are included.Toledo Express Airport area: http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_fil…

Hi everyone,I've uploaded a new version, but only in patch format. For this version, you must use ALT+F to start a new ATC session. I've tested this version using LIRF to LIRP without any problems. I could not test using LFPJ because it didn't exist (?!) in my database. Perhaps I read it wrong? It also works with S05 to KLM. These were the problem airports that were identified. They are now handled in a more realistic manner. If you depart from an uncontrolled airport, you file your flight plan with C4TO using ALT+F. You then switch to UNICOM and use normal UNICOM protocols to get yourself up into the air. Once you are about 3,000' up, you can switch to center frequency an…

I finally purchased an Asus a7n8x motherboard for $110 and an xp2100+ ($80)rated to go to 2700+ from vgames.com. After assembling the system, I went into my bios and changed the frequency from 100 to 166. My system loaded as an amd 2700+ and has been working for 2 weeks now without any problems. FLY2 simply flies with it( 30-50fps--no AA or antialialising). The video card, which is at 128 megs, still seems a little small for the texture hungry program, especially when it's flying in heavy clouds. Perhaps someone could draw less texture intense clouds? I will take a look at them and see if we can reduce them to 256 or 128 from 512. This, I believe, would reduce a major bot…
