Richard Harvey

Lake Tahoe

September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

I'm sure this question has been asked in the past, but I haven't found a thread that answers it.Queen Beatrix Airport in Aruba (TNCA) has 1/2 of its runway in the ocean... I'd like to adjust the scenery such that this is not the case. I have Ground Type Transform 1.1, so I have at least been able to change the type of the ground so that I don't sink on takeoff =)However, it's disconcerting to be speeding down the runway, and see water on both sides! =)What are my options? I've looked into TerraScene 2.1, but it only seems to support terrain in the USA (obviously this excludes Aruba!)Thanks!- Bill Ruppel, aka MELKORRest in peace, Richard Harvey

  5. Hy folks, How to repaint a aileron. This is the way it goes:1Start Fly and make a screenshot looking ( from the cockpit)over the west (or east) wing.2Use this screenshot BMPand make a sketch of how you want the wing to look with striping on it.In other words make this screenshot look as the repaint was already done.Later we use this BMP when we are painting the wing views ( alileron, flap and wing must match!!!!!)3Start Flygraphics and convert the flapanimation(west) . PBG to a BMP.Flygraphics will make a BMP and a TXT file.During the whole process thes files should stay together. The txt file is needed by the re-conversion to PBG.4Open this BMP in your paint-program.Edit…

As I've been trying to make some longer flights in the Hawker, I'm having a rash of "File not found" errors that bump me out to the desktop. I've always had these, but mostly on the "FULLTEX*" files, which I "solved" by un-podding those fulltex* files into the data directories. That makes the problem go away for those files, but every once in a while I get the same error on some other file from a scenery pod. Here's an example from my GTFO.txt file:Msg: Can't load texture DATAd16716163A2C16D4.RAW: File not foundFile: texture.cpp line 1376The file is of course actually present in the POD. This happens just enough to be really annoying. The last 4 times I've tried a 30…

I read the tutorial on how to add dynamic scenery. I am having a major problem. Every time I am done plotting my object's path (say a stock 747, or one of the biberall model planes, or one of the avro planes), I click to save the .pth. It seems to save it. Then I go to open the plot recorder window.......... and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING seems to happen. I can't go any further. There is no window to import the .pth, no window to play it back, etc - just ........ nothing. I can't seem to get the Path Recorder window to do anything for me. Anyone have any ideas? Also, is it possible to use the biberall models in my plottings? Thanks for the help on a sad day for all of us…

Re: Richard HarveyTwo years ago, I began flying in the real world after flying sims for about 15 years. FLY and MS were instrumental in saving me thousands of dollars in training as well as keeping me proficient, now that I have my instrument rating, and am about to complete my commercial and multiengine. I am now in my second year of law school and have decided that the rest of my life will be devoted to aviation. Teaching aviation law classes, working in the business of aviation, utilizing my law degree to help pilots, etc. And simming has helped me come to this realization. Particularly after getting the chance to take a 3 hour ride in Boeing's Full Motion MD-11 and MD…

On March 13, 2003, I was on on the golf course pursuing my "second favorite" hobby. At the first tee, I realized that it wasn't going to be a good day... my first shot sailed right (into the water) - my second shot wasn't any better (it got wet too). The next few holes didn't provide any additional hope - I was frustrated, I was out-of-sync, and I was getting angry. On the fifth fairway, almost out of nowhere, one of the worst storms I've ever experienced rolled in. The sky was a "deep" green, lightning was crackling all around, the rain fell in big drops, and the wind was blowing at over 45 kts. (verified later by checking the MGM ASOS report). If you ever want to experi…

I'm tooling along in the Hawker, currently descending through 6000 ft, from FL310. I've been flying a while, and everything has been OK right up until the point pictured in the first screenshot below. The careful observer will note that I have about 900 lbs fuel left in the left tank (yes, I know I cut it close :) ), and mere moments prior I also had 900 lbs in the right tank. But suddenly my right tank sprang up to around 2600 lbs, which you can see in this screenshot. Yet all throughout the flight, my fuel usage was identical for boht engines (I was paying attention to it). This of course did some very bad things to the a/c's handing. At 150 KIAS, it took full ailer…

Tom,I'm not sure how AVSIM forums are stored, but, I would like to propose that AVSIM make provisions to archive, in perpetuity, all of the message threads that Rich ever participated in here on AVSIM. They could be stored in their own read-only forum here on AVSIM as a tribute to who the man was and how he believed in his work. While Rich the man now belongs to the ages, we at least have available the means to electronically preserve who he was so that future simulation hobbyists might learn about him. It's their loss they came after ours.Just a thought.
