The FLY General Discussion Forum
The General Discussion forum for the TRI series of FLY Simulators.
| Richard Harvey Lake Tahoe September, 2002 | This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

For those of you who downloaded my EurAsia Approach Update compilation before today (file eag1.zip), there is a potential problem with one record in it. I would suggest you download and run eag1_fix.zip - import this small correcting DEX file and you'll be protected against future conflicts with other update packages. These updates are in the Fly! II Navigation area. If you haven't downloaded these new Approach compilations, the original EurAsia file has been replaced with a corrected version - you will not need the fix. :-)

I have a whole pile of terrascened quads, and "mostly" they work fine. But I have a nagging problem:Every single one of them works fine if I teleport to some particular spot and just fly around. Mostly I can also fly to neighboring quads with no problem. But if I try a longer flight, spanning multiple quads, eventually my carefully TSed quads don't show up, and I get the default ground-control terrain. Then if I fly over more quads, eventually they'll come back. Now, the funny thing here is that (1) It can happen to any quad, and (2) all the quads it happens to are fine when I check them by teleporting there and flying around, or teleporting to a nearby quad and flying…

I was flying the Navajo, and started the plane while distracted by a r/l phone call. While distracted, I forgot to switch on the alternators, which of course made the batteries die in mid flight. I still had the more basic instruments (airspeed, altimeter, artifical horison) but lost all navigation, engine monitors, fuel gauges, etc etc.(BTW I love that the sim kept track of what I did wrong and nailed me for it!) I realized right away what happened and switched on the alternators, but I never managed get those instruments working again, no matter how much I fiddled with things. Is that a bug, or did I do something wrong, or perhaps should I have flown around some more…

I thought I would keep everyone informed on the stability of the Fly online server. Last night I got in and stayed logged in for over 30 minutes! This is a huge improvement from just a few nights ago. However after I got disconnected, I couldn't log back in.Hopefully this is a sign that someone is giving it some attention.

I've discovered that even with all realism settings turned on, the Fly2 a/c are really sturdy. I can slew upwards to 40+ feet AGL, and just drop the aircraft onto the runway, with seemingly no ill effects :)Any way to make damage detection a bit more sensitive? Seems hard to damage engines as well, even if you generally abuse them. As far as I know, I have all my realism settings maxed.John/madmax

I wrote this snippit of elisp while messing about with the .SCF files. It is brutally simple and won't cope with anything 'cept for N lat and W lon, although you could trivially modify it to taste. You could also easily change how much it changes the loading boundaries by.To use it on a whole lot of files at once, fire up dired and make a keystroke macro to load each one in turn and call modscf. I did 35 in about 3 seconds that way.Hope it's useful to somebody.Oh, and don't laugh too hard, my elisp was unused for some 15+ years :) but like falling off a bicycle, you don't manage to ever quite forget.John/madmaxPS - looks like the board software is gonna remove the inde…

Fly!ers,I have just uploaded 2 approach update packages that combine all of my previous repairs and adjustments into 2 packages: Group 1 U.S. Approach Updates and Group 1 EurAsia Approach Updates. There had been some requests for this a while back, as there were so many individual update files (3 pages worth to be exact), so I hope this "compilation" makes it easier. :-)If you have downloaded all of my fixes previously, there is nothing new in here (yet) - it's just a lot easier to use and makes a better backup of the adjustments if you ever need to reinstall. If you are a new Fly!er, then those two files encompass all my previous fixes - go grab Frank Racis' DexImport …

The good folks at FSAvionics, who make the well-known FlightMax moving map utility for FS2002 should be made aware of FLY's existence. They are now in the process of developing version 2 of their absolutely authentic Garmin 530 GPS for FS and X-Plane, but not FLY.I use the Garmin in FS2002 for my GA aircraft IFR flying. The simulation is so similar to the real thing, that the user guide is the original manual distributed to pilots who have bought the real gizmo for their cockpit. It makes the Bendix GPS in FLY look like a toy, with all due respect. After getting used to having the Garmin GPS on my panel, I'm totally hooked on it. I love the way you can program approach proc…

For me using Fly II is getting better and better. We have excellent aircraft, good addon scenery and now we can import every FS-scenery.What about online flying and get the expirience of flying in ATC controlled airspace ?Who is already using Fly and squakbox online and in which areas ?
