The FLY General Discussion Forum
The General Discussion forum for the TRI series of FLY Simulators.
| Richard Harvey Lake Tahoe September, 2002 | This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

In creating airport scenery I have included dynamic vehicles and aircraft. The question is, do you want them? Moving vehicles and aircraft on the ground is not a problem as there is very little interference with the plane you are going to fly. Aircraft departing or landing at the airport can be a problem and this is where your input is required. When approaching the airport you could run into a dynamic vehicle or they may be on the runway when you are landing. It takes time to include dynamic vehicles and the file size is increased, but if you want them I will include them. Now is the time for all FLYers to offer guidance.

Hi Fly!ers!I've been using Fly since it came out and still run the Fly! (one) version, patched till the SDK version.I recall from a few years ago that I was exploring the South Pacific islands, and one day flying from New Caledonia to Vila, Vanuatu or maybe to The Fiji Islands I passed an island which looked like a gigantic needle, rising up till around 10,000 ft or something like that. I also recall I slewed toward it to examine it closer. Later on I carried on with my flight and unfortunately, I forgot to take down a position for this island. The island seemed to sit there completely on its own, no closeby other islands have been sighted.Actually, it may even have been …

There seem to be a few sources around the web for free high resolution (often available in 1m/pix, 2, 5, 10, etc) digital orthophotos. Some are monochrome, and IMHO those are of dubious use - the artificial coloring techniques look unappealing to my eyes. But some are also in color/IR format - seems like maybe 4 channels (R, G, B, IR) collapsed to three (RGB).Of course everything comes out looking all red due to the IR channel, so they aren't usable directly. But has anyone ever experimented with doing some color corrections on them to bring them back as close as possible to natural color? To a first order approximation, I figure that everything that's red should end up…

Hi,I've managed to change my startup airport/runway through the dubious practice of loading the entire airports.pod and runways.pod files into emacs, searching the (binary) data for the airport I wanted, and finding the "USblahblah" string that goes with them to add to fly.ini.But there must be some better way to accomplish this :-). Feel free to point me to a FAQ or something like that, but I just didn't see it listed in the pinned FAQ in this forum, and searching didn't turn up much either.Actually what I really want is to start in some defined location on the tarmac. Can I do that?Thanks...

I just upgraded my system from a (meager?) 392 Mb, to a studly 1 Gb.Huge difference in how Fly2 performs. No more stuttering around turns, view switching is instantaneous even when running 5/18 high/med view distances, and everything just seems to hum along a lot better.Quite recommended. RAM is dirt cheap these days anyway.

Anyone know what's up with this?If I go into the "other" weather settings and crank down the visibility (to anything, like say 4 miles), I get lots of these artifacts when flying around.I'd like to figure it out, coz i like flying in soupy weather, but the weird graphics kinda screw things up :)thanks!

Hi all,I'm kind of new to the avsim community, and more to the point, the FLY 2 community. I recently obtained my copy of the software, have installed all necessary updates, and have hit a snag. I fly for a living, and have some time in the older HS125's, so I'm very familiar with the cockpit layout. (And they did a great job with it) But for the life of me, I can't seem to get the A/P to slave to the FMS. (Or the GPS in the other a/c) I set the selector switch to WPT and fire up the FMC, but when I engage the a/p NAV function the aircraft turns to 360 and that's it. Heading bug and regular NAV1/2 functions work fine. I do all the required flight-planning setup, and I eve…

Im close to uploading Nav/Wpt database updates for the time from my previous upload until the end of the current cycle (Feb 19, 2003). I've included the FAA data this time, so the few (very few) missing wpt's on approach charts I've found, are now included.Im wondering how most people would prefer the data be released.Divided by country? (Realise though that this means to import it all yould have to import 300+ separate files (twice, once for wpts, once for navs), but for those of us who only fly in a single country (for example the US, it wouldnt clog the database full of unneccesary data.Divided by area? (4 separate areas for North America (Canada+Greenland/US/Mexico+C…
