The FLY General Discussion Forum
The General Discussion forum for the TRI series of FLY Simulators.
| Richard Harvey Lake Tahoe September, 2002 | This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

The Nice airport is simply beautiful. In one of the pics you can see the air canada md80 taxiing. It's true that if the there are no high-texture models, the dynamic scenery does not affect frame rates.tony

Rotw's NIce scenery is fantastic. However, the taxiways act as water rather than land, and the aircraft sinks when taxiing. I guess there's a displacement between the land coordinates and the airport. Any solution?tony

I know that this is totally off topic. I just thought it deserved mentioning. I'm sure that most are aware of the great loss this morning. For those who may live overseas and haven't heard yet. On re-entry this morning the Space Shuttle Columbia apparently exploded. Please remember the families of those lost in your prayers. This shuttle had a special place in my heart. As I can remember the first launch and I felt so proud. Because of the name Columbia given to the shuttle was at that time the name of the little town I lived in Kentucky. I've been a fanatic about space flight since a my early childhood. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/cadillac43/dedication.htmlhttp://myweb…

I've been mulling over the future of my favorite flight sim (that'd be Fly2 :) ). I can't say I know the current situation, who owns the rights to it, what legal issues there are, and so forth, but I have some thoughts. It seems a bit... trivial... to talk about this in light of Richard's position, but it seems like he'd want business as usual here, and this is on my mind, so...I _really_ want to see Fly continue to improve, to gain new users, and to prosper. As much as I respect the MS simulator, it just doesn't "do it" for me like Fly does, and even if it did, I really believe the whole simming community benefits from competition and choice, even if you don't persona…

Alan Kaiser has a manual for converting Fly! aircraft for Fly!2. Has anyone tried the process described by Alan? I would like to convert some aircraft, but I don't want to get partway through the conversion just to find out it can't be done.Alan, this is no reflection on your abilities and if you are around I would appreciate your comments on this. I do not see any aircraft listed as having been converted, but if you have would you share the results with us.Thanks

I've downloaded a few of the planes from ROTW, and these planes rock :). I've downloaded some PD planes for other simulators that left me unimpressed, but the ROTW planes are done with a very high level of quality - they feel as good as the built-in planes in Fly, which is a high complimented indeed.Often times I consider military planes for civilian sims to be gimicky, but the ROTW Mustang is so well done that it doesn't feel gimicky at all. The PA and the Socatta are wonderful as well.Anyway, I just wanted to say: excellent work guys :)

G'day all,At least that's how I feel. On top of the world. Just have to share my euphoria. :-jumpyAfter all my trepidations, techno-fear and just plain ignorance of scenery making I have just produced my first wee bit of terrascenery.Thank you Todd for the terrascene program which is unbelievably automated and intuitive and comes with a brilliantly written tutorial/referrence guide.Thank you also to all who have patiently answered my posts to the forum seeking help. The Scenery is 15 miles radius of YSSY (Sydney) bounded by Helensbourg in the south, Narrabeen lakes to the north and prospect resevoir to the west. Size is 53 MB and the scenery was produced from shapefiles, d…

I recently tried Fly! II on my new computer fitted with an ATI Radeon 9700 (Pro, I think). The reason I put Fly! to one side originaly, was that I had problems with it on my old computer (1.5Ghz P4 with GeForce 3). The Sim looked like it had a lot going for it with the stunning visuals, but when I fiddled with the AutoPilot on the PC12, it kept on crashing. That was with build 2.0.152, so I downloaded the patch available at the time (about a year ago), but no luck. Looking around on the AVSIM site, I came across an even later build, which got my hopes up. Now I am experiencing a major fault with the outside view (over the glare shield out of the cockpit). The scenery flic…

Thanks to all who responded to my question earlier this week.I have a problem rendering scenery...I tried to render about a 200 mile radius area around Plattsburgh, NY which covers a HUGE area including Montreal, Albany, and Boston. It took 2 days almost to do and when finished was fine for about a 60 mile radius (except for an ugly white line at the Canadian border) but everything else was just an ugly purple texture, nothing else. It's like being on Mars. What did I do wrong? Is the area too big to render in one big block like that? I just used the "wizard" prompts to start making the scenery and seected render from the drop down menu. Plus, the files in the "output" …

Greetings all,This may be covered somewhere but for the life of me I can't seem to find the info so I was wondering if someone could give me a hand. I live in Canada and would like to fly to airports such as Vancouver, Calgary, and Regina (it is strange that Moose Jaw is in the DB and not Regina) but these airports are not in my default install of fly! II. Is there a way to add airports to the default database so they show up when creating a flight plan? If so, can someone point me to a resource where I can learn how to do this? Btw -you can probably tell by the above that I am completely new to the game, in fact I have never used a flight simulator before this one so…

any help appreciated -- I continue to have problems with airport/nearby textures shimmering on approach to the field. While the local environment seems "normal" from afar, on short final the textures off in the distance start to shimmer. Doesn't happen every time, but often, and almost exclusively at night. Any particular comments? PIII/1Gig system, 512 RAM, 64 meg GeForce II card. thanks. Greg.

Wow...this baby is fun to fly. I'm posting some pics of my latest P-51 flight into Aspen. I got out the manual and really followed through everything closely. This baby kept me on my toes as I monitored engine performance, temperature, etc. The landing was hair raising...perhaps because I came in so fast. But, I did land it on the runway with only a bounce or two -- what a thrill. Thanks ROTW! This is really a work of art.http://home.earthlink.net/~finsdad/FlyII/p...ScreenshotA.jpghttp://home.earthlink.net/~finsdad/FlyII/p...ScreenshotB.jpghttp://home.earthlink.net/~finsdad/FlyII/p...ScreenshotC.jpgThe livery is one I'm still working on and hope to release soon. I posted a week or two ago with some problems I was having with the latest fly patch - Fly would crash out to the desktop complaining about files not found, which really were in my scenery PODs.I thought for a little bit that re-Terrascening those areas would fix it, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I re-TSed a large area (about 4x5 full tiles) near Seattle, but I'm still having occasional probelms of the same sort.I've tried un-podding the POD into a data directory, and I _think_ that works OK, but it's so choppy to fly that way that I can't really consider it to be a useful solution. And it's a different file each time, so I can't just un-POD a few files.I'm kind…

I have a "medium end" system - 1.6GHz Athlon1900, 392 Mb of RAM, and GF3.I typically get very fine performance as long as I don't turn much - around 25 to 30 FPS with high/med vis set to 5/15 miles, even in heavy mountainous regions - maybe 15 FPS with downtown Seattle in view on full detail mode. But anything that looks at new terrain, like either turning the airplane, or just switching over to a side view, reads scenery off the disk and causes 2-10 second pauses. This is kinda annoying when flying a pattern with lots of turning.I'm looking to fix this by upgrading my system's RAM (RAM is cheap these days!), but I'm looking for some verification that it will really hel…

Since I have been out of flightsimming for quite some time, I have lost track of how far this sim has come. I've just recently patched everything up to the most recent status, and am now wanting to start downloading aircraft, etc. I remember right before my last computer got fried that a superb new Citabria/Decathlon had just come out. I have searched both here in Avsim, and abroad and can't seem to find this aircraft now. Was I mistaken and this was only for Fly! instead of Fly!II, or has it been removed for some reason, or what am I missing. I would desperately love to have that beautiful aircraft in my collection. Any help would be greatly appreciated...Shawn
