Many, many eons ago in Internet time, there used to be a webpage with a recording and animation of an inexperienced pilot who is trying to fly into a very busy general aviation field. The poor guy makes all kinds of mistakes, he cannot find the right runway, then he goes downwind on the wrong runway, ATC goes ahead and clears him, and then once he's down he gets lost on the ground too. There was animation to show the radar scope and then animation to show what happened on the ground. The last time I looked this page up was many years ago, way before the days of Youtube or streaming video. I'm thinking like 2001-2002.Anyone remember what the URL was? I think the airport was…

A fun and interesting readBraunhttp://www.popularmechanics.com/science/ai...ce/4344036.htmlYou're six miles up, alone and falling without a parachute. Though the odds are long, a small number of people have found themselves in similar situations

Hi,I am glad to be back "home" after a very tough period in my life.I'd like to warmly thank Tom Allensworth and Avsim's staff for their support and friendship during this severe test in one's life.My young son is suffering from a severe leukemia but is very well treated in a cancer institute in Paris.Despite a very poor prognosis we today have some tiny hope to see him recover.Again, thanks to all those who expressed their support and sympathy.David

The damage in Haiti is unbelievable. Like a nuke went off there. The world is reacting. I work for DHL and we already mobilized our disaster rescue team, which is world renowned. We put people on the ground (ordinary employees from all departments and all volunteers) that are trained, uniformed and ready to work. We are not alone. In fact our DRT people do not have DHL logo anywhere on their uniforms. They are there to help not to brand. Our aircraft are also at UN disposal regularly and are flying now to Haiti since we have a very strong Latin American network.Anyway, this is not about DHL. I wanted to know more about the logistics challenges in and out of P…

The UK Court of Appeal has ruled that a US copyright judgment cannot be enforced in English jurisdiction. The reasons are that: Copyright law is a local matter to be determined by local courts Simply selling goods in a country via the internet does not establish a legal presence in that country any more than does selling by adverts, salesmen, post, telephone or telexAlthough the US courts ruled that an infringement of US copyright law had occured it was not an infringement under UK law.http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/busi...icle6965414.ece

Very interesting interview with 787 Chief Pilot Mike Carriker. He covers the aircraft handling and most interesting to me is how he feels that the 777 is the gold standard for Boeing aircraft handling and how Boeing leased a 777 from a customer and input the new 787 flight control laws. The test 777 did six touch and goes in a 45 knot crosswind at Cold Bay Alaska and the aircraft handled it beautifully.http://www.eaa.org/news/2009/audio/INT-Mic...r_Boeing787.mp3

Hello,Add to their reputation for fair and balanced news? She was quoted "It's wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news." Does having a ex-vise presidential non-hopeful moose hunting grandmother deliver the news make it more "fair and balanced news" or just funnier to watch as the nation crumbles?

As we all know, any aircraft above 256k lbs ATC appends the word "Heavy" to it's call sign during ATC communications. My question is does the same hold true for Air Force 1, or do they have some special exception, to just be referred as "Air Force 1" without the Heavy designation?

1. On a cross-Europe flight, what is the typical weight of baggage carried by each passenger? What about long haul flights?2. Is it true that autolands may only be used with CAT III ILS approaches? If not, when is a manual landing required? How can I find out if an approach is CAT II or CAT III?3. When during the climb is the PAX seat belt light switched off? When during/before the descent is it switched on? Is it switched on at any other time other than for turbulence or the like?thanks

Hello everyone,I received this from a colleague at work. It is responses from Qantas aircraft mechanics on the maintenance sheets to the repair requests by pilots. I don't think I have laughed so hard in a LONG TIME!Remember, it takes a college degree to fly a plane but only a high school diploma to fix one, but never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humour! After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a 'Gripe Sheet' which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems; document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the Gripe Sheets before the next flight. Here are some actual maintena…
