  1. Started by Dougal,

I've recently been watching a great deal of You Tube footage of WW2 aircraft combat, and have been astounded not only by the crews, but also the aircraft. The condition in which some bombers made it all the way back to UK airfields is just ammazing! One in particular impressed me; that of a B17, not only missing it's entire rudder, but with only a tiny portion of the actual stabilzer left remaining. How on earth was that aircraft brought back AND safely landed???I know those aircraft had to be designed to absorb a great deal of damage, but surely, the above just about defies the laws of flight?I am so, so grateful to all those who went before me!

  2. This isn't meant to start an airbus vs boeing discussion, but simply, after Airbus adds the sharklets to the a320 series, will the a320 series be more efficient than the 737ng series?

Perhaps someone with knowledge of the Chicago area could be so kind and provide some info!I am going to the EAA AirVenture again in Oskosh in July and intend to visit some friends in Sarasota before heading back to Finland again. Air Tran arrives at Midway at 01:56 PM and then my flight back to Sweden is scheduled to leave O'Hare at 04:25PM. So there is on paper 2 h and 30 min between arriving and leaving, but considering traffic in the city and how smooth the operations at the airports are, is there any cause for concern whether I will make it in time?Any feedback much appreciated!

Two like aircraft (let's say C172s) are near an airport with intent to land; the first is downwind and the other on a long, straight-in approach. Both are operating just fine. At the point in time when the 172 is about to turn base, the approaching aircraft is straight out, at the same distance to "pattern final" as the 172 turning base, and at the same altitude.Who has the right of way?

This question is addressed to all GA pilots who often land at smaller airports. What can you say about the radar coverage? How often are you forced to perform full IFR approach because there is no radar? I need this info for the talk I am going to give in conjunction with the Langley paper "A method of separation assurance for instrument flight procedures at non-radar airports".

  13. Hi,I just wanted to lets folks know that so far my add-ons at Project RagTag Fleet seem to work with the new version.I also compiled my new Cargo Raptor under the new SDK and it seems like it works fine. Now that my new add-ons are going to be UMMU and UCGO compatible I'v decided to come up with a different way to do fleet launch/retrieve and Warp/FTL functions in order to prevent keyboard conflicts.Eventually I will be converting all of my add-ons to the new system compiled under Orbiter 2010. Keep the blue side up.....wait in space there is no blue side.Later,Jon

  14. Hello,I need some help because my memory is failing!I'm trying to find out which airline this could be based on visual sighting about 6-8 months ago when I was in the northern Black Forest in Germany about 6 months ago.I remember seeing a short to medium range aircraft (possibly A320 family???) which if I remember correctly had a distinctive, multi-colored (blue, red, yellow) series of circles (possibly overlapping each other) or bubbles on the rear fuselage. I believe the main fuselage could have been white or blue.Any thoughts or suggestions as to what this airline could be? Sorry for the sketchy description. I found it once in Airliners.NET but now can not find it aga…

Dave, sorry I had to post here but I tried and tried to reply to your PM but apparently you blocked me. Hmmm. Not sure why.Your post to me:"Mitch,I've had a look at your various posts here.It seems like you have nothing to ever contribute, you just to come to Avsim and make rude, disrespectful or insulting posts.Next alert and you are out. It's up to you."My reply:Dave, your fairly new and apparently a little thinned skinned. So basically what your saying is this: If you disagree with someone, you have nothing to contribute.Absolutely amazing your so shallow and uninformed. 18. Hi all,Today my flight instructor recommended studying for the written. I'd like to forego ground school if possible - would prefer an at-your-own-pace course, preferably a well-put-together software course. Can you make any recommendations / critiques?[edit: I LIKE illustrations!]FWIW I have read some go a little more into explaining/understanding, and I'm all for that...Thanks,Andrew

  19. :)Wondering if anyone can recommend a cheap (read: inexpensive) GPS I can use to bring with me and record my flightpath?Obviously this does not have to be an aviation gps. I wouldn't care if it has a map or not... just need to record and then be able to download to my computer and view (preferably) in Google Maps/Earth.Any recommendations?BTW I have an iPhone which may be able to do this, but it doesn't work in Airplane mode and would rather not leave it on during the flight anyway.cheersAndrew

Hey guys,I found a neat app called 'Radio Scanner' for my Droid that lets me scan and hear a bunch of police, fire, and EMT radios. It also lets me hear a small handful of ATC towers; including KEWR, KSAN, and KPHX. So I was wondering if anyone has an app that lets you hear ATC exclusively...would be really nice to have. My whole family already gets a kick out of the app I have now. :(
