  4. So I was biking with my friend on a railroad next to my house, and we found a lot of what we think is left over telegraph wires, but we're not sure. It has 6 flexible grey wires all turning around a rigid grey wire (which confuses me since the wire bends just like any other). And for the chemists here, the rigid wire seems to turn almost black after maybe 5 minutes in 10% hydrochloric acid, and is attracted by magnets (Yes, there were bubbles and hydrogen gas).

Hey, I'm looking for some suggestions on aviation books. I'm more interested in either general aviation or commercial flying. I really enjoy reading the Plane and Pilot and Flying magazines, especially the articles that pilots write about some particular experience they had when they were flying or a detailed explanation of a crash, etc. I'm looking for it to be more laid back, good stories, and geared toward pilots or at least aviation enthusiasts, so they use proper terms, and dont spend too much time explaining as if they are talking to the general public. Pretty much like the articles in Plane and Pilot, but longer... : ) Any ideas to get me started??

According to early reports, a Afriqiyah A330 crashed this morning. Al-Jazeera is saying the plane was coming from South Africa, it happened in clear weather, just short of runway 09, killing all 105 on board. My heart goes to the victims, not a good way to star work today. :(edit:http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8676758.stm

Today on CNBC (Channel 106 on Verizon FiOS) there is a 2 hour program on American Airlines, the only American airline that has not filled for bankruptcy in its past. It's pretty interesting but of course this is not Discovery channel or National Geographic so it doesn't go that much into the details of the systems (but I'm only 8 minutes in so that may prove to be wrong). This would be great if you want to introduce aviation to your mom on mothers day :(. Whats better than having a 2 hour long program on the TV than having to click through 10 minute videos on youtube?EDIT: I guess the myth is true, I saw a small boy playing FS2004 or FSX on his laptop while flying on an a…

You will need Flash but if you're set up to run it there are some online flight simulator movies of CP pilots landing at Kai Tak, Heathrow, etc. Enjoy! :(

GA flying and golfing. They often go hand in hand! And so does flight simming and cyber golf. At least it used to! I still have found memories of about 5-6 years ago when I was part of a flight simming group that would combine VATSIM flying and cybergolf. We would fly from a predetermined starting point in GA planes and after a 30-45 minutes flight we would hook up online for a round of golf.So it was in that honor that I posted a little "fun" screenshot thread a few days ago. One thing let to another and a few posters figured it might be fun to create an AVSIM group on the new (and quite addictive) Tiger Woods Online game by EA Sports. This is the thread that started it a…

Our local aviation museum came up with this strange use for one of their retired 747's, they mounted it on the roof of a future water park of all things! Just thought everyone would like to see it! However, I do kind of think it's a little degrading to subject this beautiful old grand dame to such indignities as being part of a water slide in it's final 'retirement'.http://www.katu.com/news/92705654.html

Well folks, For those who follow the space shuttle program, A sad day's coming up. On May 14th, Space Shuttle Atlantis will be flown by Commander Kenneth ham with his crew to Resupply the ISS. Once she comes back to earth, Atlantis will never see space again, Discovery will follow suit, and the last shuttle to fly to space will be Endeavour. Thus, God speed Ken, and crew. And a big Thank you to Atlantis for her faithful service. A full 25 years of Space flight. Just one more flight to knock out before she can take her long awaited break. :(

What type of chair do you use when flying flight sim?I use a typical swivel office chair on casters which of course is most suitable for general PC work but less then perfect for flight sim.The options seem to be a dedicated gaming chair with bits stuck on (not for me), some sort of office chair on legs (I've not seen these) or perhaps a high backed dining chair. I saw these on my internet travels:http://www.gamechairs.com/Racing-Game-Chairs-C32193.htmlUnfortunately they don't seem to be available here in the UK.

I've read that all Southwest Airlines 737-300 and 737-500 aircraft have the "hardball" panel. Was chatting with a SWA fight crew about flight simulation the other day and noticed the 733 panel was completely without EFIS. However, there was a CDU.So what is the CDU tied to for autoflight? An INS perhaps? Wish I'd thought to ask the question of the crew, but the conversation was focused on SWA procedures.Anyone have some knowledge to share on this?Jim Harnes

Why don't the 737's especially the NG 800/900's have landing gear doors? And don't you think the 800/900 series would look nice with a rear double bogey landing gear system with twin wheels just like the 757?

121 people on board... plane slammed into terrain at full speed. Preliminary indication looks like crew incapacitated by decompression or an act of terrorism. F-16 pilots reported no one in the left seat and the FO slumped over in the right... Not a good month for commercial aviation folks. :(

This will assuredly start a row- but I'm curious as to how the Cockpit & Systems development costs compare with the exterior model and various paint jobs of a current "serious" type airliner or twin GA.I for one NEVER look at the outside- I leave walkarounds to my "crew". Guess I'm not an airplane watcher. I'd rather be flying- sitting in the left seat- not floating around like an angel looking down at the strange big bird!Wouldn't it be nice if you could buy one or t'other or both. Any others for whom exteriors are unnecessary- just soaking up HD space? Might performance even improve?Alex Reid
