...I was driving down the highway this evening headed for biz in Washington D.C. (via RT50 west from the Maryland Eastern Shore). There is a very small airport (Freeway Airport I believe, WOO) 90 degrees to the highway... at the end, and right next to the road, I spotted the wind sock... then it happened.. I actually looked down at my cars dash board, looking for the HSI... and began to reach for the heading bug to match it with the direction of the sock!! Of course I LMAO at my total "automatic pilot" reaction. Maybe time for a flying break!

Is there anyone that has ever been brave and skilled enough to fly their SIDS and STARS, when applicable, in raw data mode, in an airliner? I recently flew on Vatsim and flew the Clacton 8 Mike departure out of EGKK, and as I was reading the SID's intructions, I began to wonder who could possibly fly this in raw data, without the aid of LNAV, VNAV, or the moving map on the ND. I enjoy flying raw data, especially since I feel like I am almost cheating by using the moving map and all the advanced autoflight functions, but ever since I joined Vatsim, I've had less and less chances to fly raw data because it can get pretty overwhelming flying the SID/STAR accurately and not b…

Last week there was a incident involving a female pilot flying a 767 from Sydney to brisbane where she was taxing to the active rwy where the stewardess noticed that she had been drinking. They notified their management where they ordered her to taxi back to the stand, on where she was removed and a replacement pilot was found and the plane than continued to proceed. Qantas is now investigating the allegation and they havnt said her alcohol reading was and its expected to last for a month while the pilot is stood down depending on the outcome and is on full pay.

Hi everyone, I was wandering about when the Follow-Me Car is used by pilots. I'm assuming that charter flights use them much more often than regular flights. Also, I'm guessing that Follow-Me Cars are requested more in bad weather conditions when pilot can't see as clearly while taxiing. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You surely must have read Tom's news announcement that we have joined up with Digital Theme Park to bring the exciting world of live conversation via Teamspeak to AVSIM members. To reiterate, here is the link to how to join: http://forum.avsim.net/pages/teamspeak Now, listen up all hands! We are looking for those who would like to take on the responsibility of leadership and help shape the direction this opportunity for AVSIM could take. If we do this right, then perhaps we can turn our hobby into an even more compelling experience for all who want to participate. :good: First things first: We have to decide on what to do, and then how to do it, but…

Hello again, I have had real problems with Google Chrome web browser over the past 3 or 4 days not playing YouTube videos back properly. There was no audio, and the playback would freeze up after about 10 seconds. These same videos played back perfectly using Internet Explorer 9 or Firefox. I am posting this here on Avsim because I blew a ton of time discovering the 'fix' - and in the hopes of lessening someone else's pain - and wasted time. Some folks chose to "opt in" to the HTML5 player trial on YouTube, but any videos that had ADVERTISING EMBEDDED would NOT play back. Since I wanted to be able to view ALL YouTube content without interference, the HTML5 trial…

Who decides whether it is the Captain or First Officer that lands the plane? Is each leg planned and assigned to a pilot before the flight during dispatch? Is it decided in the air and ultimately relies on whether the Captain is in a good mood? As far as I understand that FO and Captain both perform as many landings and takeoffs as eachother - i.e. a 50/50 split. Thanks

Received an email from the new owners of Computer Pilot asking for me to renew my subscription to a magazine that I haven't received since it was purchased from PC Aviator. I haven't received a schred of a magazine, not a .pdf version or print version since the January/February (I think) issue. They have the gall to ask me to renew to a magazine that didn't fulfill my entire years subscription in the first place?!?. I think I'll take that money and start a subscription with their direct competitor instead! Anyone else experience this?

an-26 fuel capacity: 1,816 gallons assuming 5 gallon bucket, that's 363.2 trips overall. Video shows a total of 72 seconds. 12 seconds to walk up the stairs, assuming another 10 seconds before the bucket is empty plus another 6 to walk down with empty bucket. So 94 seconds total. 94 x 363.2 = 34,140 seconds for a full fillup. or 569 minutes, or 9.48 hours. It could only be better assuming they weren't going from empty to full. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=647_1344098431

It has been 2 years since I last installed the fsl concorde onto my system, I removed it back in 2010, because the civa ins was causing performance spikes within the flight simulator. Now 2 years later and with a new computer I wanted to try again. When running the ivap.dll, I would get losses in performance that would go from 29-30 stable and drop in a second to 17 and then back up. I wanted to try again on a new pc, Yet again, same issue, it doesn't matter if you are flying the FSL or not, I still get massive performance spikes, Any suggestions?

The parent group of British Airways and Iberia has reported a 390m euro ($476m; £306m) loss for the six months to the end of June and warned it: "will not be able to avoid job losses". Virgin Atlantic has reported an annual loss of £80m in the 12 months to the end of February, compared with a profit of £18.5m a year earlier.

The Commodore 64 turns 30 years old today.....So was computing more fun back then or now??? It was definitely a less controversial time back then without the internet and just a few friends having fun in the basement playing Castle Wolfenstein......I miss my C64

From Gizmodo: A Boeing 737-200 had to abort a landing after heavily damaging its right wing. The impact was so harsh that it ripped off part of the wing and damaged a flap. The plane recovered at the last second, when it seemed that a fatal impact was imminent. Skip to minute 2:11 to see the moment of the landing. You will see the plane tilting heavily to the right, moving to the left of the runway as if it were being pushed by extreme crosswind. You can then see the bump when the wing hits the runway. At that moment, the pilot throttles up and starts going up and to the right in a very dangerous maneuver. The Sky Airlines Boeing 737 was landing at La Serena airp…

The other day I was flying to the cruise ship aerocache in Juneau, and when I saw those big ships, I was thinking, "it would be neat if I could bomb them!" I'm not normally into [virtually] shooting things, but perhaps the frustrating demise of Flight inspired the urge to try some combat sims. The last combat air sim I really played was the sopwith mode in Flight Simulator back in the 1980s. So, I'm a bit out of the loop. My question is this: What air combat sim would you recommend for someone who enjoys the missions and casual sightseeing aspects of Flight and FSX? I'd rather have interesting scenery and objectives than uber-realistic flight modeli…

Anyone who's flown to/from Manchester Airport in the past 10 or so years will know that there's a rather large mockup of a 747 by the runway... Here it is on fire. Unfortunately no Kerosene burns today as the wind would have blown the smoke straight over the runway threshold... So we substituted that with 700 kilos of LPG. A tad better than a day in the office. Pretty warm out there. You like??
