Avsim is an ideal, a concept that sprang forth from the beginnings of computer flight simulation. There have been far more serious challenges that were overcome over the past 15 years than we can even recite. Because Avsim prevailed over the odds each time, we are still here. All of us have differing preferences, perceptions and choices when it comes to how we each participate in flight simulation. No two computers, hardware or software are the same. In fact most of us can not even agree on a single platform to fly with. Avsim is not on a mission to iron out the differences and variations between us, but to accommodate as many divisions as possible by providing a …

It's not as if I have noticed this for the first time but I would appreciate a brief explanation to the following query.Apologies if I am in the wrong forum. Why do large aircraft ( e.g A320) approach the runway on finals in a "nose-up" configuration as opposed to smaller aircraft, ( e.g C172) and some "medium" ones ( ATR 72) which approach in a "nose down" configuration until entering the flare? Also, ( I hope this doesn't sound silly) to the untrained eye there is no noticeable flare in the larger jets as they touch down on the runway as opposed to the C172 in which the flare is quite obvious and deliberate..........so does an A320 enter a flare at the TDZ??? I…

http://www.rte.ie/te...ineering_Giants For those of you with access to BBC television, mainly UK and the Republic of Ireland residents, I spotted a show on tonight at 8pm IST that might be of interest to yee. Looks like a class D check on a 747, but I can't exactly tell from the short preview. Set in a Cardiff Hangar, so a BA aircraft I'm guessing... Enjoy, Rónán O Cadhain.

Hi! Thought I'd ask what aviation or transport museums or science museums people have visited and enjoyed and maybe things they remembered seeing or enjoyed. For me I remember: 1. The science museum in Kensington, London: Cut-out cross-section of a Boeing 747 A Rolls Royce Boeing 747 engine A Rolls-Royce/Snecma Concorde engine. A real Apollo lunar module (touching something which has been to the moon and back is something!) A Vickers Vimy (from Fs2004 of course) A cockpit/radio station from a Douglas DC-3 (military version called C-47 or something?) (sorry) 2. St.Nazaire, France: A real ###### WW2 submarine base (scary place) A walk-through replica of…

Hello, Just thought I'd write a little about the pc game I'm currently playing (besides flightsim). When I was a teenager I spent many hours playing adventure games on my Atari ST by companies like Lucasarts such as "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and "Zak Mckraken". They were well written with good scripts and puzzles my only complaint being they were a little hard to complete. Currently I discovered a PC game I had never heard of by Lucasarts "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis". A couple of screenshots from how far I've got so far: So anyone else ever waste hours or days on these point-and-click "adventures"! Many thanks, Pierre

ANA's first operational 787 registration JA801A was forced to return to the gate after pushback at Okayama after a leak was discovered in a hydraulic pump on the port side. White smoke was seen streaming from the aircraft as it taxied out, and the pilots reported rapid hydraulic pressure loss. They shut down the engine and taxied back on their remaining engine. The aircraft is powered by RR Trent 1000 engines, and the engine manufacturer advised the pump is NOT part of the Trent 1000 although it is desgined for its use. On the 22nd of July, ANA grounded its entire 787 fleet due to concerns with a gearbox defect on the Trent 1000 engines. Aircraft were …

Hi! Just thought I'd ask a quick question. I know the World has moved on to LCD's but just wondering if anyone still uses the odd CRT TV or monitor at all. We have a new big flatscreen TV in my parents room and while it is light and portable and has a bigger screen I still think the basic TV picture quality on our kitchen Sony Trinitron is a lot better to my eyes. No jagged lines or glaring colours or pixelation. I'm still unsure of the whole CRT/LCD etc. thing. Sometimes the images on these new flatscreens blows me away and sometimes I just think they look bad. It seems to vary a lot. For some reason the smaller LCD screens seem to look more consistently bette…

I think I have an acceptable FSX Airport lookup website up and running. It is based on PlanG database. You can search Microsoft Flight Simulator X airport data by ICAO Code, Airport Name, Country, City, State, Runway Length, Elevation, Surface Type. Details page includes Runways, Com, VOR, NDB Frequencies and a Google Map. Please visit FSXDB.com and try it out. Also get in your ideas for changes you would like me to make.

The biggest question one must ask of course is WHY and HOW did the FBI come about this information? http://www.dailymail...-taken-FBI.html Any suggestions from conspiricy theorists and humourist welcome. 1. They got the info from the illegal raid of Kim Dotcom  2. The users are all mates of Kim Dotcom  3. Kim Dotcom planted it on the FBI laptop as the officer downloaded a pirated movie .... and my favourite 4. Big Brother is watching you AND listening to your music   Cheers DB

Another airliner clipped a parked jet while taxiing! (I think this is the third or forth occurrence of similar events in the last year) This time at DFW with a chartered AA 767 carrying the Miami Dolphins (after their loss to the Cowboys) clipping the tail of a MD-80 with it's winglets. http://www.cnn.com/2....html?hpt=hp_t3

Hi All, I've been pondering the purchase of a tablet for a number of reasons. I thought I'd start here becuase the use of a tablet would be for aviation. The iPad is expensive but both my wife and I are familiar with the iPhones. It would not be too much of a learning curve plus I like the zoom factor (bigger letters) For real-world flight, although not certified for it, I'd use the tablet for secondary reference to GPS, charts, airport / taxi diagrams and WX. On the ground, I'd use it for Aviation videos, like Sporty's training vids. For Simming, I'd use it for airport / taxi diagrams, SIDs/DPs, Arrivals, and IAP's. What tablet are you running? …

Hi! Just thought I'd ask a question which I have been wondering for a while. Back when I started flightsimming a lot a few years ago the internet was a very different place. People used to be nice to each other and say hi and thanks on posts and stuff. But these days the kind of people who can interact like this are kinda rare. So what happened to the internet?! It's not just here but also a lot of aviation sites and non-aviation too. Now people just bark random comments at each other at best! I mean are we not edjucated and well brought up. So why when online do people (not everyone) act so unfriendly these days? Anyone else notice this change or am I nut…

http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/report-apple-release-7-85-inch-ipad-october-974329 Now the only reason I bring this is up is because it could be more affordable than the latest full size offering, which could fit an external EFB of some sorts into a tight flight-sim/ real aviation budget more easily. Any thoughts or criticisms? I think they're going straight for the heart of the Kindle Fire and the likes

[imgleft]http://static.avsim.net/forum/uploads/5178256fdadc20a4074658dea0c64c8b.jpg[/imgleft] We are extremely pleased to announce that Stephen Wilcox, SpiritFlyer, and the Manager of the AVSIM Forums, has been unanimously elected by our Board of Directors to become a member of the BoD. Stephen has been a member of AVSIM since 2006, and has contributed enormously to the success of the forums and its positive environment. Stephen brings a common sense, objective view to the flight simulation hobby and we feel he will be a great contributor to planning and implementing the future direction of AVSIM. This year's Board meeting, to be held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada…
