I was thinking about this on my way into work this morning (maybe it was the dull grey weather...) Last year a Singapore Airlines T7 ended up off the runway at Munich following what appeared to be a bodged autoland without the full protections in place. Basic explanations of ILS systems state that there are effectively 2 parts to the ILS array on the ground - the localiser beams, spread horizontally to line the aircraft up with the runway centreline, and the glideslope beams, spread vertically. It is implied (if not stated) that these are located are the near end of the runway you are approaching. My question is - in the case of an autoland, what happens once you …

Greetings, I have a good friend that used to work for PSA in Sacramento, California back in the seventy's. Yesterday he found this fare schedule from 1975. I hope it uploads so it can be read. It shows fares like Sacramento to Los Angeles for $24.30, and San Francisco to Sacramento for $11.45. Best regards, Bill in Colorado Ooops, it didn't upload. Here is another attempt.

A great thread and certainly one of the most interesting in Hangar Chat for a few weeks. It is a shame that the mods were unable to find a better way to stop the politics creeping in, rather than having to close it dead. As I said, it was a great read and something that is very close to my heart having worked in the funding of private healthcare for 28 years from an insurance and risk management point of view. In the words of Einstein, the significant problems of today will not be solved by the level of thinking that created them. And that applies to all countries.

  15. Hi people! I recently made a flight in Alaska Anchorage (AK24 to PAZK). I followed ANC (Anchorage) VOR/DME to get the location of PAZK. Is this IFR? Is this VFR? I (think I ) know what are both, and their differences, but this just seemed to be a hybrid of them both (does it exists?) Weather was 20NM visibility, few clouds at, say, 5000ft. strong crosswinds (~20nm)... so no visibility or icing problems. Any input from a RW pilot or somebody knowledgeable is appreciated. Cheers and happy flying! Nicolás

  16. So where I work we've recently released a series of video's detailing the many many jobs that all make part of the day to day running of an airline. Most of yee on here will be well aware of how the pilots day goes, but ever wondered about the engineers, caterers, Ops managers, ramp agents, cargo masters, cabin cleaners, dispatchers, customer service agents ect... Well here you go, I think it comes to about 30 mins in total if you add it all up, but there's certainly a lot more going on behind the scenes than just the pilots and cabin crew. Take a few minutes to check out all these rolls and more than make an airline work. http://careers.aerlingus.com/career-prof…

  17. I get so annoyed when so called "realistic" virtual airlines think they are all on top of it when they talk about pilots submitting there PIREPS - there flight(s) in the real world a PIREP is a pilot report of the weather, yes? so then how do real airline pilots submit there hours? Is it done through ACARS tech. or something else?

As I still don't understand entirely how your healthcare system works. Say for example, you cannot afford healthcare insurance. You have a serious RTA (your fault) that requires paramedics and an air ambulance. You end up in intensive care for a couple of weeks. Who pays for that little lot?

This coming weekend is the CopperState AirShow in Casa Grande, Arizona. I've been there a couple of times--it's a great place to see general aviation aircraft of all types. Has anyone in the forums ever been there? For us Arizonans it's also a celebration of fall and our "cool" season (if you consider 70's and 80's cool). If I go this year I will be sure to take some pictures and share them in the real aviation photos section. Regards, John

Has anyone seen this on weather channel yet?? I love it! It is a reality show about ferry pilots, talk about big cojones! Last week, the Weather Channel launched a new aviation reality show called "Plane Xtreme" and Oddball pilot blogger Aidan Loehr is pretty excited about it. The series, according to the Weather Channel, is described as an adventure show that chronicles the escapades of "an elite group of pilots who deliver small aircraft to points across the globe." According to Loehr, who discloses he's a skeptic of reality TV, the show may actually be entertaining. At any rate, it certainly does not disappoint. Loehor is most excited by the appearance of real…

I am running FSX on my MacBook Pro currently. I would like to know if I would see more FPS if I were to invest in Prepar 3D at a complex add on airport such as Fly Tampa Boston in the NGX. Has anyone had experience with more performance under a larger load with P3D? If it's not worth my money please let me know.

  25. Two weeks from today, on the evening of Saturday, October 27th, AVSIM will sponsor once again the Simmer's Social. The Social is a non-hosted event where local flight sim enthusiasts and those who wish to travel to participate, join in the fun. The Social usually lasts 3 to 4 hours and allows you to meet your fellow enthusiasts from the area; putting faces to names that you see everyday here. The Social will take place at the Grande Pacific hotel in Victoria, British Columbia. The Social will kick off at about 7 p.m., and we'll be announcing the location within the hotel leading up to the event. We hope to see you there! This post has been promoted to an article
