This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. For those of you who like GTA... http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/45951/grand-theft-auto-v-is-coming-spring-2013.html However, I don't understand why they're not making a PC version. This really feels like a punch in the face.

Modern aircraft's computer have functions to give a "Bank Angle!" warning, but what about early jetliners and propliners, before the days of FMC's? Did they have any sort of urgent warning systems (bank angle, low altitude, terrain) besides the stall horn?

Hi. Can you guys please explain why most cargo operators keep Jurassic aircraft while others (Passengers Operators) replace their older aircraft with more fuel efficient ones? Take Fedex as an example. They are still operating 727, DC 10 and MD 11 despite their future plan getting newer planes. They still operate more than 60 DC 10s, 50 MD 11s and 33 727s http://www.planespotters.net/Airline/Federal-Express-%28FedEx%29. Is fuel efficiency not a major concern for cargo operation? I really want to understand the logic behind this. In addition, as SAS is retiring their MD 80's, the first converted MD 82 (ex SAS) has been delivered to its operator. Thanks Re…

With the cyclical increase the Sun's activity there is a lot more discussion about the Aurora displays. Seeing one of these displays is most definitely on my "things before I die" list. Have any of the real life pilots here been privileged to witness this display?.................. one more benefit to being commercial pilot.

Has anyone had a chance to see Skyfall yet? Daniel Craig and this series has really brought the 007 franchise to a serious, entertaining level (in the spirit of the original Fleming novels). Quantum of Solace was a real disappointment after the wonderful Casino Royale movie, but I'm hearing Skyfall does the series justice. I'm off to watch it tonight. Wish me luck!

  11. Hi All, Was talking about scenery detail just 10 minutes ago with Chase on the AVSIM TeamSpeak, and I shared with him this video. It introduces real time rendering with unlimited detail, something that game engines find impossible today. It was uploaded last year and apologies if already posted. Cheers, Clem

Yes.. I confess.. I am an addict.. like shopaholics out there, I am one of those people, who constantly look out for new add on aircrafts and new sceneries and then keep buying them. But I rarely use them for more than 1 or 2 flights. Its mathematically impossible for me to fly all those planes and fly all those sceneries.. in the time I have... i.e. the time I have in between refreshing AVSIM forum every 5 minutes. There are just a handful of aircrafts and add on sceneries that I use the most. So I really don't need or use 90% of the stuff that I have installed. Are you a nut like me or have you managed to keep your sanity and are willing to share your secrets a…

So, Who is to blame for the poor AVSIM forum moderation these days? Well there is no use hiding anymore since John Binner took a picture of those responsible while at the BOD meeting in Victoria BC. Yes, this is indeed both Chase and I caught toasting our long suffering forum friends. As you can see Chase was on forum duty so he had a Shirley Temple, and I sympathized with a glass of water. No need to worry though, the rest of the board made up for our moderation.

  15. We have reached a point where we need to ask one simple question; what is your sim of choice? When you want to go virtually flying, which of the available sims do you jump into and fire up? The last poll we did on this was included in the demographic for 2012, but that was posted a while ago, and a lot has happened. So, today, which flight simulator is your go to product? This post has been promoted to an article

Folks Can someone confirm or correct the following: Simplates only have plates (and an apparently new tablet app, as of last week or two). Navigraph sell FMS data by cycles, and once bought via credits you can download that cycle info for as many a/c as you have. You can buy specific plates using said credits. NavDataPro from Aerosoft sells FMS data which are compatible but no plates are available. Does that sound about right? Are there other options, apart from the endless googling for plates on line? Cheers Mike

It seems that the climb and descent rates of airliners is a hot topic both in flight sim and real world aviation circles. Flightradar24 has recently introduced a vertical speed feature (nice!) and I decided to play with it to see what sort of climb/descent rates airliners actually do. I've always been curious about this particularly when it comes to simulating flights in FS so this new feature is really interesting. After spending a couple of days on Flightradar24 tracking flights over my part of the world, some of the climb/descent rates of the average airliner have left me quite amazed. Makes the default +/-1800fpm in MSFS look like a shopping mall elevator! …
