For the record I have never been scuba diving. Snorkeling is the extent of my experience and I didn't go deeper then I could hold my breath and kick my fins too. So now that it's clear I am no expert on diving... I am an expert on gaming and I have played virtually ever sort of 3d game and simulation that has been out. For 3d going back to Quake, to Doom, Wolfenstein 3D (first night it appeared on Apogee BBS) Ultima Underworld, or the early sort of faked 3d like Rescue on Fractalus on my Atari 400. I remember playing hours of Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer..etc....I have been playing multiplayer online since LPMuds and having to sneak on the ORNL servers via 1200 …

US Supreme court in case styled Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley & Sons Held: The "first sale" doctrine applies to copies of a copyrighted work lawfully made abroad. What this means is that a buyer of a copyrighted work, such as software, made and purchased lawfully anywhere in the world and imported into the US can be disposed of by the buyer in the secondary market without regard to the monopoly rights of the copyright holder, in the same way as a work purchased in the US. scott s. .

The Southern Ocean is notoriously dangerous for high seas and massive storms. Today I wouldn't have even wanted to fly there either. Definately a feet up, tea and biscuits day for the pilots.

Well, after some long days, we have seem to have licked the issues that arose with the update to the IPB base software. As you can see, most functionality of the previous system is back and more importantly, the site is up to its previous speeds of response. I want to thank almost everyone for your patience and understanding during this bit of a flight diversion. We are now back on course, and things can settle down to the low roar that was AVSIM a week or so ago. This post has been promoted to an article

Runway Scare: Driverless Van Crosses Path Of Passenger Jet At Toronto Airport Canadian officials are investigating an incident in which a driverless van traveled across the runway at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, at the same time an Air Canada flight was landing late Monday night. After the plane's pilots reportedly ignored commands to pull up, the jet "narrowly missed" the van, investigators say. http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/03/15/174424548/runway-scare-driverless-van-crosses-path-of-passenger-jet-at-toronto-airport?ft=1&f=1001

this monday, France President and EADS will meet to finalize Lion Air's mega order for more than 200 320. It is unclear if Lion has also inked NEO as well.. but I bet they have. This is not the first mega order Lion has booked, In 2011, Barrack Obama and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met in Bali to take parts in Lion Air Boeing deal for 231 737 NG, 29 739 + 201 MAX recently Lion Air launched its service in Malaysia (as a response to Air Asia expansion in Indonesia?), the hybrid called MALINDO. Soekarno Hatta is smaller than Changi or KLIA, it has only 2 runways. I wonder where they'll put all the crowds. days ago, THY put an order of 117 Airbus 320, by the end of t…

I'd love to own/fly this beauty (Piper Malibu Matrix). Watch the main displays. All it needs is FSX or FS9 Google Earth loaded. Would be cool to have a accurately positioned runway on the display as you land. I'm sure one day that feature will be available. RJ

Here is a really cool site to help determine Attacks and Traffic globally (be sure to check the appropriate box to see the attacks vs. traffic areas). http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/dataviz1.html I believe AVSIM is located in Virginia which is an "attack" hot spot. But we're 157.7 % above normal for attacks. Now why Idaho leads the way for attacks I'm not really sure?? I'm guessing they have a lot of credit card processing centers there? Anyway, the above link might help some folks out to determine traffic/attack issues. Web servers are always under attack, but frequency varies, why these attacks affect performance is because the server or router or…

As you have surely noticed, we have had our issues over the last week or so. Here is the situation in a thimble.. We updated to the latest IPB software last week and it has been a problem ever since. Frankly, the upgrade was not ready for prime time and it still isn't. We are not happy with the response from IPB, and their lack of authoritative help in fixing things has been pretty dismal. Never the less, we are where we are, and hope that we will get the assistance we need next week. In the meantime, we have disabled some things (actually most things), and you will notice those. We have disabled GUEST access to the forums and functions. In a hobbled system, we need t…

I am happy to announce that we think we found the problem that was causing serious delays in response times. With the updated software, IPB inserted some java code in some areas that caused the number of database tables to be queried unnecessarily. We were able to final pinpoint the issue when we saw a call to "deliver.avsim.net". There is no such function. Removal of that has restored our system to a reasonable response time, even with (as I write this) over 800 users online. I hope you find the performance now much improved. Sorry to make the first thread here a less-than-kind one, but I'm a bit disappointed. This isn't a Simulation title. It belongs somewhere like Xbox Live Arcade. I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just that this is to SCUBA as Flight is to Flight sims. It's just missing too much to wear the title of Simulation. First, a quick background on myself: I've been diving for the past 12 odd years (Certified at age 14) and am currently a NAUI Certified Dive Master (basically one 'rank' below instructor, and able to dive as a professional dive lead). I have over 250 dives under my belt in places ranging from flooded quarries to WWII wrecks off the coast of North Car…

I'm in the initial throes of a system build. mainly to prepare for XP 10 64 bit, thus I will have an older but very capable existing system which will be redundant with advent of the coming build. I know little about WIDEFS from Pete Dowson so my question is to the users of that program. How much difference does it make having the weather on another system and does it have a positive effect on frame rates within the sim, itself? Any other advantages you can think of? Jon
