Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. http://www.engadget.com/2015/02/04/selfies-may-have-led-to-crash/ Taking selfies while you're driving any moving vehicle is a bad idea, especially in an aircraft -- and unfortunately, those snapshots may have cost two air travelers their lives. The National Transportation Safety Board has determined that a double-fatality Cessna 150 crash in Colorado "likely" occurred because the pilot distracted himself with cellphone self-portraits shortly after takeoff. Action camera footage from a flight just minutes earlier showed the man taking selfies -- investigators believe it's no big stretch to suggest that he repeated this mistake on his final voyage.

  4. Spring Airlines, a budget carrier in China, wants to offer fares to passengers who agree to stand. Fair enough, if it's a short hop. I wouldn't want to stand for 15 hours, but that's just me. I think Michael O'Leary from Ryan Air takes the cake with what is quite possibly the most mind-numbingly stupid idea ever for aviation. O'Leary said that seat belts aren't necessary because - according to him - they won't save you in a crash. He wants to get rid of them, apparently. I guess he must have been dropped on his head as an infant more than once, because he should've realised seat belts WILL save you when the aircraft encounters turbulence - something buses and trains don't…

I'm hoping that Jim from Colorado will see this and email me. Like a twerp, I've lost his email address so I can't send him WIP shots of JD's psychedelic Centurion. Sheesh, am I glad I started this one?! Picture A line from 'Rocky Mountain High' "Friends around the camp fire, everybody's high" I'll bet.

I can't believe this. Took the quiz and got Spirit! Your result: Spirit You don't care what anyone thinks about you! And you don't care if you offend some of the more sensitive souls you may encounter in life. Like Spirit, you chart your own course with little regard for popularity. Although you may make a few enemies now and again, you tend to get your way most of the time. Hi all. My life at the moment is at a crossroads where i am waiting to move into my first house, so most of my sim is in boxes. Normally this would upset me if i could not get an hour or two in the virtual sky, but to be honest i feel the whole flight sim community has got slightly more fractured than usual lately. Every day it feels like something needs a SP, Hot Fix or a complete reinstall. But hey whats new ...anyway i digress and am in no way out of flight simming. In order to to keep my aviation sanity intact i have started to collect 1:200 models, so my question is what's the best website to keep up to date on new releases and future releases? In the same w…

Hello! Are there any doctors or anyone who sims for 4+ hours who can inform me of the health effects of simming. I have been told by many that video games in general can cause negative effects on the brain, but I have always figured that this is only relevant to games like Grand Theft Auto, in which the aim is to bash people's heads out. On the contrary, I have heard that flightsim is good for mental development and is actually good for you. Of course, sitting in a dark room with six 99" LED TVs for eight hours can cause you to become physically inactive, but I am sure that 99.9% of us do not do that! Also, on the contrary to many sterotypes, I did some research and fo…

Terrain Sculptor, a new utility to create realistic terrain profiles around and on your airports and elsewhere for FS9, FSX and P3D has completed it's first week of beta testing. A few "bugs" have been discovered. All have been corrected. Things are looking good! While the functions performed by Terrain Sculptor can also be performed by sBuilder, sBuilderX and ADE, those other applications require that all sloped polys/triangles be specified individually, that you manually determine the elevation where your work is to blend with the existing mesh and specify the blending triangles. Terrain Sculptor, on the other hand, uses individual points to specify terrain eleva…

  20. I think these guys need some encouragement. If anyone here is in love with the Twin Otter Extended and owns, or plans to own, the GTN 750. Throw your name in. Let them know. As it stands, responses seemed pretty underwhelming and we may end up with never seeing a real GPS in the Twin Otter. Ever. That would be sad. This is a plane modeled up there with A2A and Real Air IMO and the only real Twin Otter option for FSX and P3Dv2. This hobby is not aviation without it. Add your 2 cents here... http://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/88257-twin-otter-extended-and-f1-gtn/page-2#entry653203 You know you want it.

According to the Times, an Austrailan court fined an abusive airline drunk passenger £5,300. It also ordered him to pay Virgin Austalia another £26,000 for the cost of extra fuel and for putting up other passengers in a hotel when the flight had to be diverted. Good for the court!

So there I was, thinking how great it would be if I could tweak things just a little bit more to squeeze just a few more frames per second out of FSX and X-Plane. A little overclocking never hurt anyone, right? Yea... Made a little progress by upping the cpu clock speed, running my I7-920 up from 2.67 to 3.0 ghz. Was I satisfied at this point? Nope. Made a tiny adjustment on the memory voltage and now I got nothing. Can't even get to the post screen or bios. I'm hoping I can just swap out the ram and everything will work again, but if not I guess I'll be waiting until I can afford some replacement parts. Kicking myself, Ken

I'm not sure if this is where to put this, if it's wrong I'm sorry. I am trying to figure out how to understand the prop pitch and mixture during climb and cruise. I'm flying a C182 skylane and I keep the throttle at full which puts the RIM at max which isn't good on the engine. I'm not familiar with the terminology. Does lean mean mixture all the way in? Please help if you can. Thank you.

IRIS Simulation Software I would like to let everyone know that had sent in an email to Iris about not having a link for updates to my aircraft unless I purchased them again. It seemed I wasn't going to get any answer. Then after a couple of months, to my surprise I got an email from David that stated that my message had been overlooked and that they were very sorry. His personal message that stated that because of their over site that they were giving me links to ALL of their aircraft and I was free to download any or all of their offerings for no charge. This has given me great pleasure to know that in this day and age that there are still people out there that care…

Well, I have to admit that I have a somewhat weird fear. In the following days I will visit a professional B737-800 simulator, class 4 (or grade 4, not sure), means it doesn't have only hydraulics (class 5), and cadet pilots are training and passing tests and exams there. Anyway I will fly a full 1 hour flight with a captain, me as FO. Since I'm in love with the FSX and PMDG NGX, I have a feel that after that simulator session my comprehension of FSX will not be the same again. I really have a fear that I will be suddenly bored with NGX and FSX generally. Now I have a question for you that were in the same situation - tried pro simulator beside FSX. How that affected …
