So after years of simming on a macbook (oof, I know), I have *finally* been able to invest in a proper setup for flight simming, and I've gone all out and built the death laser of death laser computers. And here she is! I never knew P3D could run so well, and after years of flying at <20fps with the settings turned basically as low as they can go, we're now getting consistently 40, 50, even 60FPS with what I can only describe as "cranked" settings and it's a joy. For those curious, the final specs are below: i7-8086k OC'd @ 5.2ghz NZXT Kraken X62 280mm Liquid AIO MSI Z370M - mATX mobo Nvidia RTX 2080 FE 16GB 3200mhz RAM …

For the purpose of some airport scenery I'm working on, I'm trying to figure out what ground equipment they have littered around the tarmac. For the most part I've been pretty successful, but I can't for the life of me find out what the thing pictured below is. Usually these pieces of equipment seem attached to the terminal with a big yellow hose, making me think it's some kind of air unit. Any idea what type of machinery this is, and if so, what make and model it might be? I was thinking we have a good collection of aviation people here, so perhaps somebody has an idea. I might help to know this is an airport in the US, too... (though I don't wanna say what airport I'm w…

In a manner of speaking. For years I've had to lower my screen resolution and size because the instrument numbers and GPS displays were too tiny for these old eyes to see even with my computer glasses. But next week I'm getting new eyes...cataract surgery. Since I spend so much time on my computer and reading books I opted for the near vision lenses instead of the distant vision lenses (I will still need glasses for driving). She will use lenses that will correct my astigmatism problem too. My optometrist told me he has corrected it as far as it will go with glasses. My doctor assured me I will be able to read fine print without glasses. I get my left eye d…

Just saw the trailer for First Man which chronicles Neil Armstrong. Looks like their are some flight test scenes in it as well and should appeal to those who liked The Right Stuff, test flight and space flight. Premier is Oct 18th.

Hello, I hope Im allowed to make this little announcement... The TwOtter is an aircraft I love, very capable aircraft, versatile etc, and looking on Internet, I saw that many people liked this aircraft too. I come with the idea to create a Discord Server for TwOtter Lovers (FS and Real life) to make a community around this iconic plane. https://discord.gg/XbB57kJ I am not the best at making Servers, but everything can be edited 🙂 Regards, A TwinOtter Fan 🙂

After more than three decades with this hobby I wonder about it. I have tired of buying payware, not because I do not like it, I just like to budget and not get aircraft similar to what I already have (who needs a 172 for P3D when you have a nice default in Xplane, and a 177 for P3D, lol). I will buy more, to be assured, a few titles a year, like the upcoming Carenado Falcon 50 and Embraer 120. But flying the sims themselves, especially since I do not get real airtime enough, I just do not tire of and I try to at least get an hour or two a day in. I do not like flights over two hours, and depending on the aircraft's speed I pick city pairs one to two hours apart--like…

I am wondering if anyone remembers this cartoon series from the late 60's/early 70's. It was one of the few cartoons I enjoyed (along with Road Runner and the Flinstones, lol). Every episode the pilots in the Skyhawks would be solving a crisis. It was not on the air long, just curious if any simmers in my age range, or others have seen it? John

  12. Rosella Bjornson honoured with Alberta Order of Excellence Once, while landing a plane in Calgary, Rosella Bjornson radioed the tower and was mistaken for a misbehaving stewardess. The year was 1974 and Bjornson was the only woman in North America working as a commercial pilot. "We were landing at the Calgary Airport, and of course I was using the radio. And the ground controller said, 'When did Transair start allowing flight attendants to use the radio?' "I laughed and I said, 'I'm not a flight attendant. I'm a pilot.'" https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/rosella-bjornson-pilot-alberta-order-of-excellence-1.4868503?cmp=FB_Post_News&fbcli…

I am curious how flyers have enjoyed wide body airliners over the years. I have three favorites--my all time favorite was the TWA L1011. Just loved flying in it, and on approach to JFK once from SFO our pilot announced we were doing an autolanding to the suddenly hushed cabin passengers. Yes, I was a bit nervous too, it was my first such landing, in 1982. I just loved the look of the L1011 head to toe, it looked so nice the way the rear engine was faired into the tail, unlike the DC10 where it just stuck out. My second favorite was the Boeing 767, I loved it because of its economy seating, there was only a window and aisle seat, felt like first class when I flew …

  16. Hello all, I have a question for real world GA pilots about weights and balance, or more accurately, changing the balance once underway at cruise altitude. For instance, I like flying "with a mission". This can be summarized as going "somewhere" with "somebody" to do "something" once we get there. And example would be flying from Portland-Troutdale in Oregon with friends and family to visit the Pacific Northwest (maybe Sequim W28) to look at places to retire. Another would be to load up the family, including doggos, at Reid-Hillview (San Jose, my local GA airport) and fly to visit friends in Lake Tahoe (KTVL). Given such a mission, I know I want to be bel…

Hi all, At the age of the internet, paper is still nice and has it charm. For example you can hold a magazine and read it wherever you want 😉 Well, you can too with a tablet or a smartphone, but anyway... In France and we have one and only french magazine, which I will not name, dedicated to desktop simulations (mostly flightsims). I used to buy it but I'm no more interested in the articles. And now I want to read in english. 1) I am considering to get an annual subscription to either PC Pilot (UK based) or PC Pilot (US based). I read a couple of them a long time ago. Today, which one do you recommend? 2) If I recall correctly, Computer Pilot "shut dow…

It was revealed this week at CitizenCon. The three-minute cinematic trailer stars Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, John Rhys-Davies, Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill and Mark Strong. Aside from a short combat sequence at the end, it’s light on action, more showing voice acting and facial rendering for the mode. The trailer introduces the story’s existential threat, but not the actors by their names or characters. They are: Anderson as Capt. MacLaren Hamill as Lt. C…

This was interesting to read today. My shortest flight ever was on a United Metroliner from Oakland to SFO and back again when I flew to Socal in 1987. I wanted to fly out of Oakland, easier traffic but I later decided I preferred the drive to SFO. I remember the flight from SFO to Oakland the most--we took off from runway 1R or 1L (I cannot remember) and banked right immediately, flew eastward until we hit the ILS for Oakland's main runway. A very short flight it was since we did not fly the pattern. The Oakland-SFO flight, though short in straightline distance, was longer because we took off to the north, banked over San Francisco, then flew south to get into the p…

I have to say I have been to many airport terminals, in almost every state, in many European countries, in Japan, in South America and more. What stands out? These are my top ten: 1. Pittsburgh Intl due to its indoor airside mall linking all the concourses 2. My own Sky Harbors terminal 4 for its landside mall and food area, and air train to our light rail and bus system 3. San Francisco International's International terminal. I have not been in its concourses but it is light and airy in the ticketing area, and has a Bay Area Rapid Transit station right there in the terminal. 4. Heathrow Airport Terminal Three with its great airside shopping mal…

I have flown so much I have had several moments of "serendipity" in airports, some with family that I did not know, sitting next to me, which happened in Caracas once, another with Pete Rose who boarded my flight from Reagan to Florida, but one memorable occasion in Dulles on the way home to SFO. I was sitting in the non-smoking section of the waiting area. In Dulles at that time, you boarded a vehicle that took you directly to the aircraft, they still use them to a small extent but they were in large use in 87, when I was flying home from a week as a tourist in DC (got to visit inside the White House and see Ted Kennedy speak in the Senate, two highlights, in addit…

My parents bought me a copy of this anniversary issue of Flying Magazine while I was hospitalized back in 1977. I gave it to a friend who never returned it. But luckily I found it online, on Google.... It is worthy of a look, prophetic, some 40 years ago, in many ways. I flew to Europe that year, earlier in 1977, almost on the 50th anniversary of Lindburgh's Atlantic crossing, my first trip. This magazine issue celebrated that flight and aviation in general and was one of the best aviation magazine issues of Flying I ever read... https://books.google.com/books?id=SOUUuRXEFmoC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&amp…
