Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. Here is something that seems to be similar to msfs in the way it streams different data from online, can be bought off of Steam. https://flyinside-fsx.com/Home/Sim Free trial available. What do you think of its quality?

Hi! I have a question. Can anyone tell me why and when FlyTextures and its website of flytextures.blogspot.com was removed, where all of its downloads are currently available and whether that website will recover? Thank you so much for your help. Sincerely, Connor Richey

The other day a young avsim member asked if any of us lose proficiency from being absent from flying a particular aircraft [or something like that, i am paraphrasing] My answer is yes. Today I hauled out the C208 that I have not flown in maybe a year. Had to use the checklist to get started [I know, I always need to use a checklist] Anyhow left Pensacola FL in the rain and headed over to Gulfport MS; overcast at 3500. Good flight with v-speeds handy, and landed on rw14. But was I completely comfortable having not flown this one in a long time? Not 100% as I was not managing the throttle and prop as well as I should have. It may seem crazy but I tend to plan a flight…

Yesterday, December 5th, Avianca turned 100 years old. Some official videos about this: https://youtu.be/P3mc3zZ10js https://youtu.be/Qgf7XLmTfU0 And (although unofficial), my favorite: the making of the retro livery on the A320: https://youtu.be/kEdp2Ma54P0 Personal comment: as a Colombian, it has a special meaning for me, because the first planes I remember seeing in my life were theirs. So, happy centenary, Avianca!🥂

  5. Hello everyone! I've been fascinated by aviation since very young, my mother would be (and still is) constantly travelling so since i was very very little i'd be hanging out at airports. Sometime 8 years ago i started "flying" a freeware sim called FlightGear, i didn't know how to fly anything actually, i'd just literally fly and talk to people. 2 years ago when i was 16 i decided that maybe i should try to learn to fly. So i went back to FlightGear and tried to learn, but it's a very limited sim so i went to FSX, that's where i first flew A320s and 737s (Aerosoft and iFly) but i didn't know how to fly, i simply used the default panel and used the ATC to vector …

I am setting up my Saitek BIP panel to indicate to me when my fuel is running low and critically low. I fly many different aircraft so I would think it would be best to set it based on percentage and not gallons (or pounds). This maybe is also subjective? What would you suggest I should set the two indicators for? Not looking for perfection. My first guess was 25% and 15%? Thx for any input.

So I'm not sure if this is the best forum to ask this but don't know where else to post. Anyway I was wondering if there are any specific regulations or airline procedures regarding the amount of runway you should have left when you lift off the ground? For example if you were taking off from an 11,000ft runway and the calculations said you would require 10,800ft then you couldn't do it because of safety reasons. I would think there would have to be some sort of minimum to maintain safety.

  8. Looking at the trailers for FS2020 and elsewhere, it seems like GA aircraft with new Garmin systems almost have better visuals/augmented reality. What am I missing?

  9. Ya' know...... Sometimes I think I have been on this forum waaaaaayyyy too long. After a while, you can't help but notice certain patterns that arise..... Certain arguments, and certain types of posts that are repeated with only slight changes over the years, to the point you feel you are watching some sort of loop in time, with each person, even yourself, playing out their assigned roles, even to the point of being able to predict within a few minutes when the mods will step in, which mod it will likely be, and what they will almost certainly say, if anything...... Sometimes now, I find myself heading into a loop with a particular type of poster, and think…

Now, AVSIM, please bend the rules just this one time. For some of us, a new Microsoft Links golf sim would be ridiculously exciting! Microsoft are reading this forum, please allow one totally OT thread just this one time. I would love to see a new Links version! Microsoft is the King of Golf sims and we desperately need a modern top quality golf sim! Links 2020 or Links 2021 or Links 2022, as long as one is coming. It would put the golf simming world on fire!

Like most, I'm thrilled about the new sim in 2020. I think the future is bright, both for flight simulation and for Microsoft as a corporation. A few weeks ago, I posted a half-joking question here as to whether those of us who receive the "Insiders Newsletter" would be guilty of "insider trading" if we bought Microsoft stock based on our "insider knowledge" of the sim. Some of you who know more about these things than I do assured me there was no legal peril. Because I'm a person of very modest economic means, I never really and truly considered buying stock in Microsoft because I didn't have much money and because I knew nothing whatever about buying stock. I also …

It's wonderful that developers are able to give u so much detailed scenery these days. But at what cost? Orbx's new Charleston scenery is superb. But the load time! If I load up my trusty old Kodiak and tell it to go to Charleston I get stuck at 37% on the loading bar for no less than 12 minutes. I don't want to drive from the Slave Market to the waterfront restaurant where I can see Fort McHenry from the window next to my table. It's a flight simulator...not a street simulator. I want to take off from the Charleston airport and see a reasonable depiction of the city without going to the kitchen to do the breakfast dishes and then vacuuming the living room…

I know this has nothing to do with anything. I guess I've had a bit too much Jack Daniels but I decided to post it anyway. It will probably be deleted by the Mods but it's just something I feel I have to do. I never knew my father. He died the month before I was born. He died on this day 77 years ago. He was grunt in the 2nd Marines. And he never returned from Guadalcanal. I saw a WWII vet in the grocery store today. He was 92 years old and still looking good. I shook his hand and thanked him for being there for us during those terrible years. I'd ask all of you that whenever you see someone who was in the service of their country all those many years ago to just …
