Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. It's a race between three companies. Lockheed Martin, Ultra Safe Nuclear and Blue Origin. Although no idea what Blue Origin know about nuclear power. I agree with him that a Hall Effect Nuclear Electric propulsion makes more sense.

We've discussed the Fermi Paradox a few times on the forum. A new study makes it even more paradoxical than before. Even setting very significant constraints the galaxy should be replete with lifeforms but none seem to be there. Seems to me, civilisations don't last long enough to colonise other star systems. Seems to me a civilisation might be constrained to just their own star systems.

  3. I´m actually working on LSMD for P3D5, enhancing the default one. The airfield is still in use but the military has not much operations there anymore. So the state of the default airfield is without any parking spot. Adding a few details I came across this strange object (right side) on the ground. Anyone who knows, what this is? Next item looks like a little shed and an antenna lying on the ground (pure guessing) I have another picture on this one Feel free to look at it with Google earth or Zoom Earth etc. https://zoom.earth/#view=47.40031,8.641949,16z/layers=labels:off Both objects are pretty much in the middle of the airfield,…

Requiem for a Fighter Pilot Jesse Callahan passed away this morning. He was 98 years old. He was a fighter pilot. He flew P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs over Germany during World War II. After the war he transitioned into transports and flew C-97s from California to Japan. At Hamilton Air Force Base he flew C-119s. When he was stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona he would drive up to the Grand Canyon on some long week-ends and fly the Ford Trimotor sight seeing airplane. He was also a flight simmer. While Jesse was short in stature he was quite a man. And he was my friend. After retiring from the Air Force Jesse began a second c…

Wow, I love learning new stuff! I suspect that most of us have no factual understanding about what the causes of tidal action are. Now I know thanks to Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson having explained it in easy to understand and humorous words.

I missed posting last weekend since I was in the emergency room getting a pulmonary embolism diagnosed. It's a small one and I have medication for it and am back to normal now. Here's another of my boyhood stories that some of you might relate to. The Entrepreneur The kitchen table was the center of our household universe. It was a bulletin board for notes Mom and Dad would leave each other. It was the place snacks would appear when Lee and I came home from school. It was the place we did our homework, and it was the place family discussions were held. When anyone came into the house, the first order of business was to check the kitchen table. There…

  10. Is there some way to get rid of those obnoxious, ugly orange smoke plumes RTMM has at several airports? I was just flying to Bella Coola this morning and I have valley I fly down into the Bella Cool valley through and then make my turn down the river and look for the runway. This morning there is that blazing orange plume of smoke RTMM must think are beautiful. I could possibly live with them if they were restricted to RTMM airports, but not when they are put into Orbx scenery. I hate them! In all my days of flying I have never seen such a thing. If I can't get rid of them then RTMM will have to go. Noel

When I installed P3Dv5.2 a few weeks ago I decided to use the Return To Misty Moorings mega install for P3Dv5 instead of installing it piecemeal as I had done before. The only sceneries I have installed are RTMM and all the Orbx North American sceneries and airports. Bella Coola is one of my favorite airports for exploring central British Columbia. But RTMM has literally butchered it and made the airport unuseable. This is what RTMM has done to my Bella Coola: Obnoxious orange flare visible from the moon. Water Tower right smack dab at the end of the runway. Flagpole in the middle of a taxiway flying an AMERICAN flag, NOT a CANADI…

  18. Good day, jokes aside (in the title), I've been into flight simulation since my Commodore 64 days. I have no education around software development or the economics involved. This is not a developer "whipping" exercise, but throughout Avsim, I have seen many questions or queries regarding projects for platforms other than MSFS which have not been developed or advanced as originally advertised or where there is confusion as to whether a particular project will ever go ahead. I thought we could maybe post here, and the respective developers could "chime in" and give us their perspective? Examples: Latest UGCX, still in Beta since last year, although the MSFS version - PushBa…

  20. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/06/nasa-is-actively-searching-for-life-in-the-universe-official-says.html Given the distances involved I would think that proof of extraterrestrial life elsewhere in the universe could only be determined by intercepting radio transmissions that indicate intelligence. Has there ever been any evidence that any the UFOs that see to be crowding our skies are communicating with their home planets? If they can solve the problem of vehicles exceeding or bypassing the speed of light could they also communicate back home by somehow having the transmissions bypass or exceed the speed of light? Would we be able to intercept those communica…

  23. So, having just installed my first NVME drive, I had been fiddling around in Bios and looking at the new storage in various ways, when I noticed what appears to be a hidden virtual drive on my machine. (Hidden meaning that it seems to be invisible to normal scans) Using Minitool Partition Wizard and others, this read-only space Identified itself rather unhelpfully as (Disk 8 GPT 1.64 GB Read ONLY) Which did not tell me much. Further probing gave me a name for the drive, which was MSFT XVDD, and I was unable to affect or modify it in any way. Some searches revealed this as apparently having something to do with GamePass, and the only game pass item curr…
