Hangar Chat
This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar. Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here. Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc. Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view. Looks like Alice, to fly later this summer, has had signifcant design changes. Gone are the motors on the wing tips, they are now on the tail. Gone is the tail wheel, I'm glad to say, now a nose wheel. 1000 kilometre range and seats 9 passengers and two crew. https://www.eviation.co/aircraft/#Alice

⚽ Those of you in the US or those of you that don't like football won't care. But well done to the England Football Team for reaching the final of Euro 2020. One year late due to a certain pandemic of course. This is our first final in a major tournament since we won the Word Cup in 66. Of course, anything can happen in a final, so I won't be disappointed if the Italians beat us. Great that we simply got to the final. Sunday's final will be quite an occasion.

On the subject of boring and big holes, there's a fantastic project taking place at the Eden Project in Cornwall. They're digging a huge hole for geothermal power that will ultimately, not only power the entire Eden project, but also thousands of homes nearby! There's great potential in the UK for geothermal power. Could provide up top 30% of our needs.

Hi everyone, This is my first ever post, so please forgive if I get it wrong. I've been searching the net about the operation of the Flight1 Super King Air B200's flaps. When my airspeed drops below 157kts, my flaps automatically extends fully without me setting the flaps (uncommanded). Is this something that should happen or is there some setting to stop it from happening. Thanks.

I have a problem, and it’s time I’m honest with myself about it. Looking for others’ thoughts here. I’m a private pilot, probably 85% of the way to getting my Instrument, with dreams of commercial and flying cargo or passengers in the Caribbean some day. I’m 45, very steady, good job. I enjoy flying but it does make me apprehensive at times. I consider myself to be a very competent pilot. My problem is this: I love simming. And I’m starting to think that it may just fill my flying need. 100LL and Jet-A in the sim are the same price, $0. Planes are cheap, too. Hourly rentals are low, no maintenance. (Being sarcastic here). In real life I have access to two wonderful …

Yesterday celebrating Independence Day were two good musicals on TCM. The Music Man and Yankee Doodle Dandy. Watching James Cagney sing and dance in Yankee Doodle Dandy I couldn't help seeing him as the tough guy in Public Enemy. I thought perhaps some other tough guys on the screen could have teamed up for a musical. Guys like Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, Humphry Bogart, and Lee Marvin tap dancing their way to Alcatraz and singing songs like, "I talk to the bars, but they don't listen to me..." stolen from "I talk to the trees, but they don't listen to me.." as sung by Clint Eastwood in Paint Your Wagon. At another thread / forum, in the mid of a discussion regarding a completely distinct subject ( or maybe not .. ) there was this post of mine where I refer to a video about the "internal mechanics" of a PT-6 turbine engine: " It includes a very good explanation of why turbines ( in this case a free-running PT-6 ) cancel torque so effectively: https://youtu.be/hATrgAsgevY?t=139 The full video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hATrgAsgevY" I did send Austin Meyer the link to that video, and he promptly replied in the same base as @Murmur did in that thread: which is totally correct ( Murmur knows what he's talking about 🙂 ) …

"... he was one of the worst mechanics in the luftwaffe!" An interesting comment to the Youtube presentation "Which Country had the Most Effective Fighter Planes in World War 2". Actually the payoff at the end of the video is his nomination for best fighter plane in wwii, not the best country's planes. I was always interested in the subject but could never make up my own mind about this. Too many opinions from the aces themselves, contradicting.

I'm not a real world pilot, but I've been flight simming over 30 years. I study aviation as a hobby and have been doing so, trying to "play" flight simulator as realistically as I can. I always look up the airport and study the airspace around it, so I can fly it "properly" unless I'm just checking out the scenery for something, then I'll buzz the are with the "drone" I'm finding that it's been making me a bit weary - it's exhausting. I don't know how you real pilots deal with it. I realize real pilots don't jump around the world like we can in sim, so you do get to know your area very well. I had a friend in high school that started flying and he complain…

https://www.dni.gov/files/ODNI/documents/assessments/Prelimary-Assessment-UAP-20210625.pdf "Some UAP appeared to remain stationary in winds aloft, move against the wind, maneuver abruptly, or move at considerable speed, without discernable means of propulsion. In a small number of cases, military aircraft systems processed radio frequency (RF) energy associated with UAP sightings. The UAPTF holds a small amount of data that appear to show UAP demonstrating acceleration or a degree of signature management. Additional rigorous analysis are necessary by multiple teams or groups of technical experts to determine the nature and validity of these data.…

The Mystery Explosion on Larkin Street It was February, and Chinese New Year was just around the corner. Chinese New Year was a big event for the neighborhood kids. Fireworks were against the law in San Francisco, but the city looked the other way in Chinatown during that annual celebration. Those Chinese merchants became a once a year source of forbidden toys. Lee and I hiked up Pacific Street, over Russian Hill and down to Chinatown. For almost a week we had been hearing the sporadic echoes of firecrackers around the neighborhood. Our pockets were full of allowance money, and the siren lure of those little packets of gunpowder called. We worked the…
