is MSFS going to run in a VM environment that will scale and provide the necessary horsepower to run the sim? I can imagine what kind of processing and graphics power will be necessary to drive the a High Resolution graphics we are seeing in the previews. I am also wondering if Microsoft will follow the Flight model, subscriptionizing every component, regions, aircraft, ATC. As a hard core simmer, I didn’t even bother with Flight. Also, what ATC enhancements are planned? I stopped using X-Plane because of the lack of ATC interaction. Austin kept promising but never delivered. Even third party ATC programs didn’t control AI A/C as well as ( I believe…

  2. There has been no post about VR since my last post was closed on 29 February. I am really sad it took me over an hour to write the post, but it was closed within less an hour. My last and the forum last post is here: https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/571120-i-have-a-bad-feeling-this-sim-will-never-have-vr/ My conclusion can be an exaggeration, but my concern is not ungrounded. It's based on reasoning and past experience. I might be wrong. Everybody might be wrong. But even a wrong opinion can lead to constructive discussions. The reason behind the initial no consideration of VR can be open to serious discussions. Is it overlook, technical difficulty, or m…

  3. Here are the reasons for my fear: 1. They said they had not considered VR in the beginning. The beginning of this sim is 6 years ago, and that’s when the VR fever was at its peak with the rise of Oculus. In the whole 6 years of the rise and fall of the VR bubbles, and they have not considered VR for the nextgen sim? This is a strong sign that they are really not interested in VR. It is only after the announcement of the sim and the admittance that they have no consideration for VR, which met with strong reaction, that they changed the voice , but that’s really a passive attitude that leaves a lot uncertainty. 2. When the next generation of Xbox was revealed to h…

The results of the Navigraph FlightSim Community Survey, 2019, are available here: https://download.navigraph.com/docs/flightsim-community-survey-by-navigraph-2019-final.pdf. There were 17,800 respondents, so the survey should give a fairly accurate snapshot of the flight sim community as a whole. Oddly, considering the apparently increasing popularity of VR, the numbers who reported using it for flight simulation only increased by 1% over last year's result - 11% in the 2018 survey compared to 12% in 2019.

Never had my own personal VR headset, did a demo once, didn't feel right at all. I can see myself playing around with it in the future once Flight Simulator adds support for it later on. Setting aside value. What is the best headset money can buy right now? I'll remember the manufacturer and when the time comes I'll take a look at their offerings in the future because this technology is still maturing.

  6. What is this related to MSFS? Well it means we will eventually get VR, implemented by MS/Asobo or not. This is very encouraging. The not so encouraging: it's almost after 5 years...

simulated pretty well, when the world inside VR completely fades to black. Had to manually add oxygen to the (free) EUFI because it was an old version that didn't have it. positive/negative Gs work pretty well to, you do "feel it" when your vision turns red. fairly good example of that here (just after timestamped 8.29): Why? Are you starting to think MSFS2020 addons wont be able to compete anytime soon?

Let me preface by stating...... Im a VR convert. If I had a choice, I probably wouldnt be. If I could balance it out with flatscreen gaming, I'd happily do that but it's just not possible. After getting things set up properly the difference in experience is like going from a gameboy to a trackir computer setup. Sounds dramatic but........ with no VR support, microsoft 2020 will not be playable. It blows me away how innovative and ahead of the curve this new sim seems to be. Knowing what we know, things are kind of pointing to the fact that this will be the new sim flagship..... nothing out now will be able to compete (presumably). For a cockpit centered game/sim, It'…

Headset on for ground operations and take off. once in the cruise on autopilot I take it off and enjoy the views with good resolution on monitor then headset back on for approach and landing. anyone else? VR is crucial addition for me but also the ability to easily swap back and forth between 3D and 2D during a flight!

I posted similar to the below in the VR poll thread but the thread was shut down before there was time for anyone to respond. I have never used VR and know essentially nothing about it. Most of my flying is IFR and all the recent VR 'discussion' has triggered some questions for me: 1. I use a 2nd monitor to hold various IFR charts and a moving map so I can quickly move back and forth between the VC and the charts ( I currently use TrackIR ) -- how is that handled in VR? 2. I have written many Lua scripts that, through FSUIPC, let me do things like bring up checklists, enter courses, altitudes and headings very conveniently using the keyboard numpad, reposit…

Does anybody know if the Asobo team have tried VR flying themselves? My feeling is that if they did, they would see how vr is clearly the future for flight sim. Of course, it’s early days yet, but even so, I would still never go back to a flat monitor.

Nobody's asking for VR, thats what Microsofts Phil Spencer (head of xbox and gaming at MS) said https://stevivor.com/features/interviews/vr-not-a-focus-of-project-scarlett-says-phil-spencer/ How many Simmer use VR actually? 1 of 100? And here is my concern. The very few crying so loud that Asobo made VR a priority taking time away from real important stuff like ATC, AI or similar.

I posted this on the main forum. As this is strongly VR related, I'd like to share the idea here. I like PilotsEYE flight documentry series very much. It's such a pleasure watching those real pilots do the pre-flight preparations, taxiing, takeoff, approach and landing in such a professional way, exchange casual talks between them, and enjoy the magnificant view inside and outside the cockpit. It's great enjoyment as well as learning all aspects of airliner flight. Now can we have this in the new MSFS? Technology has so advanced that we already have photorealistic cockpit and scenery, then how about some lifelike virtual veteran pilots that fly th…

  17. The sense of scale. It really matters for flight sim. This is actually one of the most facinating aspects of VR. I still remember the first time I flew above Italian Alps, it's such a mind blowing experience I can never forget. From that time on I know flight simulation must have that sense of scale, otherwise it's not real. And the new MSFS brings about so much more that needs the sense of scale. The new weather system, for example, could be so much more atmospheric with the sense of scale.

I would like to thank the mods for opening this new sub-forum. Finally VR enthusiasts can discuss VR related matters without having them dispersed among frivolous posts, or ruined by anti-VR people. An entire sub-forum like this (in addition to confirming VR importance for the new MFS) also makes it easier for ASOBO to follow users suggestions or ideas in a much better way! 😉

  20. Half-Life: Alyx is the only major opus in the Half Life series in 12 years. It's VR only with full support for Knuckles controllers, and all Index or Knuckles owners will get it free. The whole game world has gone crazy for the announcement. What does this mean to MSFS? Well, it means it should get VR a harder look. There will be a upsurge of VR in 2020 along with Half-Life Alyx, Oculus Link, Pimax 8K X, etc., It would be a big loss for MSFS 2020 if it misses the big torrent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2W0N3uKXmo

As stated in the Jörg Neumann interview, "We already started with VR, but we want to do it right". I believe from all the videos released so far they will not take away from any other area just to implement VR what I've seen so far is totally mind-blowing and totally unexpected so I'm sure their take on VR will be just as awe inspiring and practical. Hoping to use my Rift S for an incredible experience.

Woke up to the flood of MSFS videos and got as excited as a 4 year old on Christmas morning. Then the bombshell in Froogle's video at 25:08 "We asked them about VR they've said no, VR would not be in there at launch, maybe later on but it's perhaps a longer term goal". Aaaad there's my hopes dashed against the rocks. Not even "no VR from the start, but it will definitely come with an update". If there's no VR from the start, I doubt the whole thing will ever be optimised for VR. They'll no doubt be targeting 30-40 fps at 4k rather than the 90fps kind of performance VR requires. The sim looks amazing, but playing on monitors just does nothing for me. …

  24. VR fans appear to be overzealous about the VR, but this is not without reasons. VR is important, and more important for flight simulation, and even more important and urgent for MSFS. Here is why. 1. We all long for bigger view, from 14'' to 50'', from one monitor to tripple monitors, and there is no bigger view than VR. And MSFS offers the biggest view of the earth, which cries to be fully viewed in VR. 2. We all long for realism, from cga to HD, from HD to 4K. But realism is very limited if it's only two dimensional. We need real 3D with real perspectives to have real sense of the space, and it can only be easily realized with VR. And MSFS offers the…
