Virtual Reality (VR) for Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020/2024)

This forum is for discussions of virtual reality as it relates to Microsoft Flight Simulator.  Have a question as to whether VR will be developed for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, post those questions here.  For information about VR Hardware and Games, please visit the AVSIM Hardware and Games Forum - https://www.avsim.com/forums/forum/796-virtual-reality-vr-hardware-and-games/.

  1. 'Microsoft Flight Simulator' will support one VR headset this fall First it'll hit the HP Reverb G2, but other headsets aren't out of the question. Well since it will be availible on steam too, i hope i can experience it with my Valve Index too, just wow! 😁

  2. With the HP Reverb G2 being the first VR headset being supported by the new sim I am eager to jump in and buy it, but I want to know if I am better off waiting for other headsets to be supported. What is the best no compromise (or least compromise) VR headset available? How does the Pimax 8KX compare?

This was being discussed in the VR forum so wanted to share. The best part about flying in fsx was VOR to VOR in IMC conditions using your radios. Navigation was what made it fun. Navigation was what always made flight simulator fun dating back to the early days...because the graphics weren't like they are today. Most of the time I flew IMC and rarely looked out the window. Now we just set waypoints, hit autopilot and look at the scenery go by. You might as well just watch YouTube videos of flights. VR changes everything. I rarely flew VFR until I started flying VR. With the 360 degree view you are literally sitting in a plane looking around. You really feel li…

Hi! My computer is driven by diesel engine from 1942. My computer was updated 1974. Do I need some update for the new MSFS 2020 or maybe just fill up some more diesel in my power-engine? Grateful for all kind of help! Thank´s in advance!

Hello all, I cannot find a way to map a key to toggle video recording or to toggle an instant replay nor even to take a screen shot. I also know the normal response to a question like this is to "RTFM" or to put it politely, have a quick squiz at the manual LOL There ain't one, more's the pity. Can someone tell me the terminology being used for these mappings please. Regards Tony

  7. So in the given ideal specs chart for Microsoft Flight Sim 2020, It mentions RTX 2080 GeForce card. My question is which RTX 2080 card should I choose as even among 2080 series Geforce have different card models with huge price difference. Geforce 2080 ti is double the price of 2080 extreme or 2080 simple. Please guide as Ti is very expensive?? Thanking in Advance

  8. What hardware will we need for 4k VR with the reverb 2 in a big airport with a airliner? I don't think the 3070 will be enough for 50 fps. I don't play vr or 4k currently, but 1080p. I have a 2070s and in airliner and in big airport etc i get less than 30 fps. Your guess?

I am used to flying in VR, using IL2, DCS and XPlane and love the experience. However, the flight models on those are pretty sedate when it comes to flying conditions. The planes feel almost on rails at times. But the way the planes bobble around in this sim, particularly the smaller GA planes, reacting to every updraught, and bit of turbulence means we are in for an epic ride. The planes are just going to feel alive. I cannot wait for VR to come. Even if it means splashing out on a new 3080 or whatever it may take. This is going to be the most amazing VR experience out there. Unless the developers manage to screw its up somehow. Fingers crossed 🙂

How do VR users manage to use their controls (HOTAS, yokes, throttle quadrants) without feeling like you are walking around with your eyes closed? Is it really intuitive to know where all your buttons are? Or does it take some practice for it to become efficient?

Just an idea. I do not have or used vr. I was wondering if it was possible to have sensors in a glove to mimic hand movements instead of the existing controllers. Turning knobs and various other cockpit movements would seem to be more realistic and easier. I would definitely consider adding vr when the new MS flight simulator adopts it. I would hope for a lightweight, efficient, high quality visualization of flying be made.

Idle thoughts......... As a Tester, I really do appreciate all the great things Microsoft/Asobo have brought and are likely bringing to us in the future. But having said that, I've had a growing feeling that I failed to acknowledge even to myself, until another tester (and also a personal friend) contacted me to ask if I was also getting bored already without vr. As soon as he said it, I realized that I had indeed been feeling increasingly confined by the 2D screen, even with all the beautiful things I was seeing. This opened a conversation where we speculated that sims that might otherwise be severely put on their back feet by competition with all thi…

I never bothered about VR. For me it’s a very very early technology with all the flaws early technology brings. A gimmick that shows a idea that can be beautiful but due to hardware and technology limitations is far from ready. Last year I had the chance to try PS VR and while it was cool to be in a 3D world all my prejudices have been hit. Blurry image, uncomfortable to wear and it looked like I was looking through binoculars as I could clearly see the two round displays with a lot of black around. Further I am a hardcore game. But most VR games are stupid action showcases with the depth of a puddle. Well as a simmer with DCS, soon Fs2020 and Star Citizen I ha…

  16. ...is the difference between movie and real life. When you are watching movie, you are always outside it. It's like seeing the world and other people's life through a windows. When you are playing in VR, you step into the world, and you are part of other people's life. The ultimate goal of VR is to become life itself, to become another life, a new life, a life better than ours. Isn't that what we want? How can one resist that?

  17. I don't really know if MFS is going to be or not VR-compatible... All I know is it looks Great / Gorgeous / Amazing as it is right now... I couldn't care less about wearing silly helmets... I will adhere when they develop a chip that can be incrusted 🙂 and plugged into my sensorial system... Then I'll try VR ... I have even dropped EdTracker, although I agree it was nice to use while I was playing my war games. Ok, now that I got your attention, I would like to share that I really have the best of the hopes regarding MFS. I believe MS's new sim has all of the ingredients to become a great reference in terms of general flight simulation, fo…

it seems surprising that the HP Reverb G2, with Microsoft as a listed development partner, is already available for pre-order in some localities, however, nothing I know of has been announced about the evolution of the WMR component, & today’s surprise announcement of the official release of MSFS - pre closed Beta testing - has no inkling of the MSFS VR actual implementation plans, some general clarity statement/s about the MSFS VR status would be mighty helpful & most welcome.

Hi, I thought that we could have a similar thread as we have have in the main MSFS formum but in this case, VR only (Hi, Asobo-Microsoft). There are many ways to implement improvements and here we can give some good ideas to developers so they could get a hint about what the VR community wants in the new MSFS. I´ll start: -Having the possibility of a walk around check before getting into the cockpit is a must in VR. Of course you should have the chance to walk outside the plane, through airports etc.. I like the way xplane does it, probably much better than the weird moving of the avatar in P3D. -MSFS VR should have the possibility of reading cha…

  22. The Pimax Vision 8kX has passed a reasonably credible Snellen Test at 20/20 readability. This is a very significant milestone for VR. Full readability for cockpit instruments. https://community.openmr.ai/t/pimax-vision-8kx-snellen-test-20-20-readability-eye-exam-chart/25456

One of the biggest anticipations for the up and coming flight sim has always been VR. Once you have had the experience of vr in a flight sim its almost impossible to go back to head tracking technology. Thankfully Microsoft listened to the sim community and have now prioritised the implementation of vr. However, when choosing a platform to run the new sim on things become a little frustrating. I could build a £2000 PC to cope with the games demand processor requirements or I could invest in the new Xbox x series, but wait......Microsoft are launching this console without VR....really. I could purchase the new ps5 which does have vr capabilities with possibly a new psv…
