Microsoft FLIGHT Archive

I just had what must be a stupid idea otherwise the teams at MS would have thought about it before. Let's give it a try anyway. What would stop MS from:A: Launching flight in spring online as planned and keeping it as a game with a closed app store for the gamers. This version would be locked to only launch the official payware addons from the closed MS app store.B: Leveraging the flight engine to launch flight sim 11 a little later as a boxed version at similar price as FSX with full world and open SDK. This version could run 3rd party scenery, planes, etc. That way MS would make twice as much money, once from the gamers and once for the hardcore simmers, keep everybody h…

  2. I think it goes without saying that the only limitation of the XBOX 360 that may really be keeping this sim* off the console is limited hard drive space for many existing users. I don't know how long it might be until we see the announcement, but based on what's been publicly released and discussed so far, it seems like a certainty.

Anyone even heard of it?According to the Flight press releases it will be the only aircraft available until you sign into Live - at which point you also get a Stearman. So put your hand up if you've heard the first thing about this aircraft, which isn't even due to go into production until late 2012.Makes you wonder just how big the briefcase full of cash must have been.....

Looking at the new message from MS.. It will be only Hawaii.. And only available via download.. Expansion packs?? Are you serious?? I hope they are keeping it hush hush and it will be the whole world.. But it looks like the light at the end of the tunnel is getting VERY dim..Whoops.. Wrong forum.. Guess i got a little "click happy" and hit the wrong one.. Still a let down..

I was REALLY disappointed with Flight... It's totally different then what all of us expected. What will be of FSX? In 5-10 years it will be like FS2002 now... Nobody wants it. Or, it could be like FS2004, which kinda reminds me of Windows XP's continuous usage. (It's the most used OS in the world) Maybe FSX will be the same?Prepar3D thing is $500. I can't afford that. Is that it for flight simulation? Are we done?Microsoft Studios did a lot of work on Flight, only for it to me trashed by the real FS community. Why didn't they just make FSX SP3? I would have much rather payed $10-$20 for SP3 than get Flight for free and pay for scenery later.

The title says it all. A rather naive but crystal clear and straightforward question. Is there a last minute hope and a chance that MS might alter their decision and tailor Flight as a flight sim? My question has two sides. The 1st is if MS is reading the community and then decides to change it, and the 2nd is if technically is possible.

  11. I presume that Microsoft's marketing and business development folk looked at some numbers and decided that FLIGHT, as a free system with downloadable content would be a hit in terms of numbers sold and profitability. OK, I can accept that they probably looked at a specific metric and I assume (and it is a pretty strong assumption) that they looked strongly at the age demographic. That would make sense to do given their presumed targeted market and pure numbers. However, connecting age to flight simulation or "a flight game" was based on what? The number of members of a first person shooter and a presumed age carry over to FLIGHT? What is the median age that they calculated…

  16. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0d5e2Y7Y_UAirplane game? OK, I did not post this to make fun of the guy and at least he admits he does not know much about airplane games but this one looks cool. This is exactly the type of people that Micrososft is hoping to attract and they will uninstall it after 10 minutes - there will be no purchase of additional content. Good job Microsoft, way to kill a franchise!

  17. Given that the beta is obviously underway, I am both curious and puzzled as to the decisions made relating to the beta selection process. Ive never been selected for game beta testing in my life (I did apply for the Flight beta), despite writing programs and beta testing them as a profession. I'm not so much disappointed that I missed out (though I admit I am disappointed, as I am retired now and would have had time to do a good job for them), as I am simply curious as to what exactly Microsoft were looking for and what filtering they applied to the applicants. At first I thought it might have been because my age was beyond the target demographic, but I no longer think age…

Forgive me for saying so, and for being so blunt, but what did you all expect??It was stated it would be a Windows LIVE product...which means paying for extras. What did you think the extras were? Navy ships? Shipwrecks? Landmarks? They only ever showed Hawaii. They only ever showed 2 aircraft. They used the word "game" in their news releases. They said it was a 10GB install.OrbX said they were not interested in developing for it. (If anyone knows anything, THEY DO.)I mean, there were enough clues to make it as obvious as the amount of fat in a deep fried packet of fries! They did everything short of coming out with an official news release. Now they come out with the b…

I just had a thought, I wonder how long this was in the planning? When Flight Simulator was shuttered, Microsoft said they were committed to flying games. Perhaps someone had long since come up with this idea? They would have known that the existing team would never agree to gut FS and strip it down, and maybe that's why ACES was closed.

Thus far I've waded through thousands of words about the latest information about "Flight," yet not one person has mentioned something that I found both curious and intriguing...That is, Flight is apparently NOT "geo-limited" at all. The entire round ball of earth is present in the basic FREE download, at whatever level of minimal detail, land class, textures, etc.The actual LIMIT is apparently FUEL! You can fly in any direction you wish, but be sure to carry your life jackets or other flotation devices, 'cause you're gonna be ditching that bird when the tank(s) are dry... :(

I know a lot of you's are very 'passionate' and eager to dismiss this new title, because of various differences compared to previous instalments, but may I ask this:If they approached this from a different angle (I will give an example), would you (s) have reacted differently? Less like a mob filled with fury and disappointment? No no, dont leave just yet... hear me out.For instance, If they had of possibly created a questionnaire, with various options to see whether or not the new direction would be well received, and leave space for peoples opinions and suggestions... all of this before it was set in stone, would you be more forgiving? Some may think the current movemen…

  22. On their Facebook page, one chap wrote it was so bad...not only would he 'yell' out to the rest of the world, but that it amounts to a RIPOFF of Nintendo and Pilot Wings! He then states that with disgust, he un-installed it!!!!One chap wrote in that it is so bad (beta tester) that the biggest laugh, would be that it was covered by an NDA in the first place. What a terribly sad day for a franchise that was so amazing, so magnificent in bringing to the masses what it would be like (in simulation), to fly as in the real world, real procedures, well...'as real as it can get' short of stepping inside a real aircraft.I am so disgusted with the spitting in our face that MICROS…

  24. Hey fellas, I've been sitting here wondering what I would try to do if I found myself deep in the bowels of MS and responsible for authoring the overall "Flight strategy". You know, the "grand plan" so to speak. Here goes - - - all hypothetically, of course. Now, I'm no software genius but I have a group of great, young teammates who will handle that aspect of this project. It's my job to put a product out there that will appeal to the broadest spectrum of the market for such products. It's also my responsibility to design, if possible, a product that will take maximum advantage of the significant economic upside available to all those products of its class that become "…

Okay, this thread is for the cool down and for a starting point to look forwards, with clear mind:1. Flight was a let down for hard core simmers expecting Flight to follow FS trail:- This can be stated pretty sure fact unless next week brings something whole new and unexpected to the table from FS. Unlikely !!!- Even if Flight is success with more casual players, it is seen at its best as a platform to more serious sims (FSX, P3D, XPX etc.); in this sense may serve sim genre somewhat well2. Legacy of FS-series:- FSX continues to be the most popular option at least for a while; it has huge user base and many of those are disappointed with Flight, even if it will be a succe…
