The Win7 OS Forum

As simmers migrate to Win 7, we are sure there are going to be numerous questions regarding the use of FS and other sims in this new system. We have opened this forum for the community to focus on that OS and the impact of FS use within it.

Hi All, Not sure if this is the right section to post this, but I was wondering if I could get a little insight regarding RAM upgrades and potential performance boosts. I have recently upgraded from Vista 32 to W7 64 and have seen a nice performance increase with FSX (DX10 to be specific). I have 3 GB ram now and know that W7 64 will recognize up to 8GB. I would like to increase the amount of RAM but not sure how much I should add. I'm guessing there is a law of diminishing returns in there somewhere, but not sure at what point. Will I even see any benefit beyond 3GB? I also use some heavy on FPS addons, REX/Active Sky, PMDG, various addon scenery. I normally put money in…

As in the title I am totally and completely confused by Windows 7. Having come from XP and getting a new, virgin computer. I installed FS9. Then on advice I created a partition and installed FS9 there. I thought I had uninstalled FS9 from the Main "C" drive but I see some of it still remains.I then installed a CPFlight Driver on "C" drive and must also have installed it on "E" drive. Then I try to uninstall it and it disappears from the All Programmes list but sits complete on "E" drive still. I just don't understand-why didn't it uninstall from "E" drive?I have installed Ultimate Terrain, Ground Environment, WOAI packages, GoFlight Modules, FSUIPC 3.96, PMDG737-800.etcI …

Hi GuysI have recently upgraded to Win 7 64bit and have 8GB of physical Ram. I have loaded up FS2004 + all my addons, Ultimate Terrain, GE Pro etc etc and was doing a flight in my PMDG 747 across europe from Poland to the UK and 15 miles outside EGLL the screen froze and then I had an OOM memory error and was quite shocked, I thought the whole point of having 64 bit was I would rid myself of these memory issues as I used to have the 3GB switch when I was running XP 32 bit before. Is there something I missed? I checked the task manager and FS9 had eaten up around 1.9GB what was quite odd was there was a process called audiodg.exe that had eaten up 2GB of memory as well but…

I can get microsoft operating systems free through my school. My question is would it be worth it for me to upgrade from my Vista 32 bit to windows 7 or Windows XP, and would I benefit from upgrading from a 32 bit to a 64 bit? I get good frames right now with many add ons just looking for a slight boost. My computer specs are 3GB RAM 2.0 ghz processor and a 9500GT video card with 512mb. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I have always had good frame rates with CLS planes but now on my new rig with W7 freshly installed and FSX working great only my CLS planes have deteriorated in the FPS department. I for the life of me can't figure out why. All my other addon planes by PMDG, LevelD, Just Flight and Aerosoft are all working great, but load a CLS plane and the FPS drops drastically. I've been scouring forums including the CLS forum but have not seen anything on this. Can anyone point me to something that might be a clue as to why only the CLS planes, and not any of the others, are giving me FPS problems.Otherwise, my FSX works beautifully paired with W7 64 bit on my new rig, much better tha…

Does anyone know if you can use system restore to revert back to Vista or is it better to use a "ghost" of your system to revert back. I've had Windows 7 for quite awhile, but I've been hesitant to install it because I have Vista working pretty well. Thanks for your help.Bob

Hi,From what I can see this topic has been discussed before but rather old now hence this new topic.Have Win 7 and XP as dual boot with FSX and FS9 installed under both and each on separate partitions.I was using NVIDIA 88OOGS and used to get average of 12 FPS on both around New York but with a lot of jerking. Over the months I have tried many variations etc, but no improvement. I recently upgraded GPU to ATI Radeon 5850 HD. Have achieved an average of around 20 FPS around New York with no jerking and with everything maxed out under XP. Very pleased. However, under Win 7 FPS has dropped to around 4 to 5 FPS. I have tried all the settings from minimum to maximum in every p…

I was recently doing my homework in Microsoft Word, and I was slightly dissatisfied with how much space the taskbar and the slightly bigger menu bar took up. I was messing with the auto-hide option for the taskbar (Right Click the taskbar > Properties > "Auto-Hide the taskbar", but I like to see what apps I'm running at all times. For the first time after 3 months :(, I noticed there is a checkbox to enable small icons ("Use Small Icons"). To do this 1. Right click the taskbar. 2. Select Properties. 3. Check "Use Small Icons" and hit 'OK'.This makes the taskbar significantly shorter, while keeping it organized and allowing more data to be shown on the screen verti…

Will I have problems if I purchase the OEM version of Windows 7?I want to change my FSX computer's OS from Vista to Windows 7. From looking at pricing, the Microsoft supported full version of Windows 7 is almost twice as much as the OEM version. Which version did you purchased? Is OEM worth the possible support problems? Is Windows 7 Home version sufficient for FSX?Thanks.

I installed Win7 yesterday ( had Xp before) and today I am reinstalling software, FS9 and all the addons. But seems to be problem with Ultimate Terrain Europe for me. When I run the texture configurator, make changes and then shut it down, I get a message that says the TextCfg MFC is not working, with two options: 1) close it, or 2) Search for a solution online and close it. And even though the changes remain in the configurator, there is no change in FS9. For example, the street light color doesn't change in FS9.Anyone knows what the problem is?

I noticed a few days after upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit (final) that my system sound levels would be reduced a lot (barely audible at times) when I would exit FSX after a 15-20 minute flight. I am using on-board Realtek audio and trying several driver versions intended for Windows 7 64-bit made no difference. I eventually determined that this happened ONLY when I had heard some ATC communications with AI aircraft and that the length of flight had nothing to do with it. If I detuned COM1 so that I did not hear any ATC communications, system sound levels remained unchanged on exit from the sim. I also determined that restarting the Windows Audio service would restore …

Hello,I have recently purchased a new gaming PC with Windows 7 operating system.Although FSX has installed correctly, I'm having problems with PMDG 747-400X, in that, the Add-On will not display in the task bar at the top of the window when the simulator is running. Therefore, the aircraft control surfaces are inactive, ie; the ailerons hang down, the rudder and elevator is not working. and all the instrument panel gauges are displayed blank.Any ideas please!!!tiami

Good day to all! I am having trouble with adding & deleting textures. I have the CLS DC-10 collection in the Just Flight F-Lite boxed version installed and everything is working fine except my liveries for this aircraft. I have deleted unwanted texture folders from the aircraft folder as well as removed the [flightsim.xx] text from the aircraft.cfg. when I restart FS9 and select my DC-10 the aircraft manufacturer, model and variation text still appears and the aicraft preview screen either shows blank (black), or shows the DC-10 with plain white (paintkit) textures. I have added & removed textures from my other aircraft with no problems, so I am not sure if this i…

I posted a thread about my performance on W7 a month ago or so. The loading time of scenery took well over 3 minutes along with any sounds and vc textures. I ave up and did not use W7. However, I partitioned my hardrive and reinstalled FSX on the new partition and WOW. Perf. is amazing. If you are having problems with your fsx, put fsx on its OWN hardrive. Good Luck Ill post my specs if anyone wants to know.

From what little I've found, so far, it sounds like FS9 (and all 32 bit apps) must reside in something called "Programs X86" in the Win7 OS install? This would seem to preclude running FS9 on it's own HDD.Is it the same way for XP 64?
