The Win7 OS Forum

As simmers migrate to Win 7, we are sure there are going to be numerous questions regarding the use of FS and other sims in this new system. We have opened this forum for the community to focus on that OS and the impact of FS use within it.

Hi all,Finally I decided to install FS9 on Windows 7 X64 because lately I suffered from OOM's in Windows XP x86 SP3Yesterday I did my 2nd flight under Win7 and I got an Appcrash after 2.5 hours while cruising at FL340 :Cry:This Appcrash was not an OOM (I checked) but an error in FS9.exe/dpnett.dll (DirectX)Since I have no experience at all with Win7 related to FS9 I have a few questions: Does FS9.exe needs the >2GB patch or can I use the default FS9.exe (and still utilizing all my 12 GB memory)? Should I run FS9 under 'Windows XP SP3 compatability' mode Should/can I install the DirectX 9c runtime under Win7-X64? I have installed the latest nVidia 258.96 drivers, are t…

I upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit from Windows XP about 9 months ago. At that time, I only installed FSX and had almost made a full transition away from FS9. However, I've been waiting for a long time for a full fidelity 737NG sim and the iFly release has made me look back at FS9 again (I'm sure PMDG will be the king, but it's still looks to be at least a few months away). I reinstalled FS9 a couple days ago in preperation for possibly buying the iFly 737 and have found that some of the menus don't seem to work properly.Specifically, I find when accessing non-MSFS menus (i.e. FSUIPC settings, Level-D settings, etc) while in full screen mode I just get a black screen. If …

Idea : FSX is on disk 2 of 3 (namely 0,1,and 2), of partition letter G:/Temporarily copy all of FSX to another HD say, disk 1Remove disk 2 and replace with a new SSD (first time installed on computer so no other traces of it yet, get it up and goiong letter it G:) using same SATA cables for disk 2, so it is now disk 2, right? Recopy FSX to the SSD which is was made to the partition/drive letter FSX had before G:/ of disk = 2So the registry paths are all correct now, right? And should not FSX work as it did before without a glitch :( ???Any comments?Oh, one more thing, Should not be in the Win 7 OS forum but I got caried away thinking I could have it both ways and have…

  6. I am having a problem compiling new assignments for the GA section of Ultimate Traffic 2. It is documented on their forums that they can take a really long time to compile. I know, "long time" is very subjective. As a reference, FSX fires up on my system in about 70 seconds. When I try to save the assignments, I get the the following error message:"Ultimate Traffic 2 has stopped working - Windows is checking for a solution to the problem..."Followed by"Ultimate Traffic 2 has stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."Of course, I would assume the database is corrupted o…

  7. man I am getting pretty hacked off with this! I have now spent the best part of two weeks re installing windows, now on my second install of win 7, and I CANNOT get FSX to run without crashing. one my first install, it was visualfx.dll mostly, now its terrain.dllI am close to taking a hammer to my computer, i can tell you. In fact , I also just set up a dual boot of win xp on my sopare machine, so I could re install Falcon 4 without that crashing on Vista. It runs great, and I am sorely tempted to just forget about FSX for a while and go back to Falcon, when at least you know it works and you can bomb stuff as well..!how difficult can it be to get a microsoft game to ru…

Anyone know what it is ? :( All i could find is that it possibly belongs to Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility, also that this thing *might* possibly be turned off or even deleted. Any FSX flight that lasts longer than half an hour will end in a BSOD. Event log will always say : Provider XTUservice, Error :XMP Initialization Failed. I'm running FSX on a brand new Alienware Area51ALX.i7-980X, GTX480,12GB/1600Mhz Tri Channel Mem, W7Pro/64bit.No overclock.I have tried lowering the scenery sliders and even lower resolution of the 30" monitor (normally at 2560x1600)all to no avail. Keep getting BSOD's after about half an hour flight, no matter what scenery.Would love to know more…

Ever since switching over to win7 64bit professional, I am unable to get my monitor to display 60hz refresh rate. It always flashes back to 59. Why? I have latest drivers for nvidia 285gtx and have tried 2 separate 24" monitors, a dell, and hp. Is it an operating system bug?

Hi, after being unable to re install FSX due to some probable registry issues, I have re formatted and installed win7. I have a fresh install of FSX, that until today seemed pretty solid. However now, 90% of the time when I start it, it crashes with a fatal error. I have looked in the event log and the faulting module is visualfx.dll - anyone know about this one? has anyone else had the problem? Any ideas? Cheers, Mark

My FS9 setup is presently on a HDD with Win XP SP3 32 bits. I am dealing with a number of OOM CTD, caused by complex aircraft add-ons, which I would like to eliminate (although I have the 3GB switch installed). To avoid a full reinstall of FS9 with a massive number of add-ons (sceneries and planes) I was advised to buy another SATA HDD on which I would install Win 7 Premium 64bits and create a shortcut for FS9 on this new drive and OS. Does this sound like a logical step? My PC is an Asus PT6 Deluxe Intel I7 940, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon 4870 1GB.Last question, which drive should I install MCE, REX and ASE which are all running in sync with FS9?Thank you for your help.

I've been running the same hardware and Win-7 OS for the last half year. About a week ago, weird stuff began to happen: my mouse would jump around on its own; windows would close on their own; the back button would mysteriously move me while I was typing; Hotmail messages would be sent without my commanding it....A real mystery. I tried changing keyboards, changing the mouse, and even disabling some FSX peripherals in case there might be a driver conflict. No joy.So my cousin, who runs a software company, is on the MS Developers team and he says Win-7 has a mouse pad sensitivity issue. HUH!??? Mouse pad? I have a laser mouse and a 3M laser mouse pad. So I Google t…

Hey Fellow simmers,I hope I can get some help from this post!EDIT: I'm SORRY for the wall of text ...A little backstory:About two weeks ago, I got invited to a beta based on a plane I fly, so I got back into simming after a 2 year break due to real world flying. So, I set out and bought FSX Standard and a joystick. I installed FSX from the disks with no problems whatsoever. I was able to start it, and enter my code, and fly. Then I installed SP1, SP2, all of the C++ files, and the .Net 4.0 framework. I installed and tested the beta plane I was working on, and then installed my copies of CS 757/767X and ran multiple 5-6 hr flights. Then, realizing I had missed out o…

I recently took delivery of my new PC which has Win 7 64bit Home Premium. I disabled UAC and installed Flightsim X. I ran it a few times and then installed SP1 without any problems. When I tried to install, it only went halfway and then stopped wit an error message telling me that it could not complete the installation as my system has not been modified. I did install FsX on a separate folder (not Program Files). I gave myself full rights but that did not help. Could anybody please tell me what it means and what to do?

I am currently midway through the Win 7 optimize guide by Nick_N, and have run TweakPrefetch.exe and made the changes, confirmed with WinPrefetchView that I have the correct and only file in the top pane, then run TweakPrefetch again, Options/Advanced Controls, and gone to Tools, but can not see the option "Rebuild Layout", only a "Fetch Configuration Wizard" which seems to have little reference to what I'm looking for. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong, and what effect not rebuilding the layout would have if I can't find out what is happening? Thanks, Bruce.

So Im going to install W7 Ultimate, with Vista the first thing I always did was activate the Default Admin account and install fsx under that account, then I never really have to worry about permissions or any of that other jazz. Now I know my way around a PC and I'm the only one that uses this pc so I'm not really worried about someone going on and doing something crazy which is the reason why MS hide that account and introduced UAC, just wondering if anyone one else does this and if you know of any possible issues with FSX itself installed in this manner. Call me old fashioned but as the Admin of my home network I like using the real admin account. :(

Hi,I know I'm posting alot it's just being new to W7 Professional 32 bit is very daunting, Anyhow I'm trying to find some files that I've got on XP but can't find them for W7 they are as followsMicrosoft Net Framework 3.5 / 4Microsoft SQL Server Compact SP1 English These need to be for the 32 bit and not the 64 bit. I did find two things for the above but they didn't have the 32bit one so tried to install 64bit and it wouldn't work. Again I'd be very grateful for the help offered.Kind RegardsJason Thompson(Very newbie to W7) :( :(

  21. Does anyone know how to make it so Windows 7 and FSX stop asking about every single gauge, every time, if it's safe or not.

  22. Hey,I need some serious help here! Can someone help me please? I'm trying to install SP2 for FSX under Win 7 Ultimate. I've successfully installed FSX and FSX SP1, but when I try to install SP2, it allows me to agree and install, but then it hangs and the installer stays blank!Any suggestions?

HiThis is driving me nuts!!!I'm trying to replace a file in a sub-directory. UAC is fully off, and I have full control in permissions. I have ensured that I 'own' every folder, sub folder, directory, and file.Yet when it comes to replacing the file in question, I always get 'destination folder access denied' or 'you need permission' boxes. I can look inside the folders - I just can't do anything with the files. All Users have the same permissions, i.e. full control. I've even set up a new user account I found called Administrator that's supposed to give complete control, but even that ends with the same errors. There must be a way to take full control as with XP........A…

When I fly in FSX, it is common that I get a black screen in the middle of the flight. When the screen blacks out, I still hear the sound of my aircraft. I started getting this problem about a week or so ago, and I noticed the black screen is occuring more and more often as time goes on.Also, when I CTRL-ALT-DEL' and end process for FSX, my PC freezes and I have to restart.Anyone know a fix? And is this Windows 7 related? Thanks!!Specs:*Also, i have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 295, and the driver is updated*
