There used to be only 2 stops for me: developer.x-plane.com xsimreviews.com The former providing glimpses (between the jargon) into the future path of x-plane. The latter provided a near daily dose of very entertaining commentary and reviews of addons worth downloading. Between the two, these sites offered a combined sense of both something to look forward to, and something to enjoy right now. However it seems to be the case that in the latter case, my daily fix of reading needs to look else where - I count just three posts so far this June. So, what other blogs are worth reading for my literary x-plane fix?

Not too bad uh? I'd say the best 3D/volumetric cumulonimbi I've seen so far in a flight simulator. Now, to conform to AVSIM rules on posting screenshots: to make X-Plane render clouds like these, go to the weather screen, then choose "set random and only semi-controlled weather patterns", and drag all the sliders to the right, except the last one ("randomness"). Then click on "Regenerate Weather Now!". WARNING: if, after regenerating weather, the aircraft icon happens to be in a "red" (thunderstorm) area, click the "regenerate" button again, until there will be no red clouds under the aircraft icon. If you do not this, upon resuming the flight, t…

  3. I've been wanting to write this post for a while now and here goes: I really just want one thing from X-plane at this time: one area of the world, it doesn't have to be huge, with the same level of detail as an Orbx region. I want landmarks, airports, seasonal changes, the whole she-bang. I want to be able to immerse myself in a corner of the world that looks real. I don't care if it is Egypt, Australia or PNW, it just has to be real. To feel reel... X-plane is my favorite sim. It does so many things right and there is a lot of nice payware planes, but we need that one piece of scenery to rock the X-world. PS. Alpilotx's New Zealand scenery is very nice, b…

  5. From the Dev: Ok, I think I can get this next release out next weekend. I was hoping to have some time this weekend to complete but alas, that won't work out and I have to head out of town. I just have two minor bugs to fix related to the flight plan filter option and then I have to update the manual and create builds for the various platforms. Here's what's new: - Random flight plan generator as described in this thread: http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?showtopic=67119 - Add filter options to only display flight plans that are active or ones that are active and near the user - Display ground route currently in use by taxiing planes - Fix some gro…

  6. This is from Austin: WED ALERT! World-Editor (A.K.A. "WED") 1.20 is here now! Here is the link: http://developer.x-p...ls/worldeditor/ For X-Plane, this lets anyone quickly build…. AIRPORTS! Now here is the coolness of it all: We have freely included a bunch of airport 'furniture' with WED. This includes pre-built hangars, control-towers, terminal buildings, fuel depots, FBO offices, lights, etc. So, you can now create airports that have pretty-decent layouts with really high-quality pre-built buildings! This makes it really easy to get nice-looking airports hat are laid out about like the real ones… for the thousands of airports in the world! On other wor…

I’ve been playing with XP rendering settings and also nVidia’s with the sole purpose of finding the sweet spot for my not so fast/old pc. Now, I love HDR but with my gtx560Ti 448 at 4x SSAA + FXAA just can’t handle it and in 2X it just doesn’t cut it, too much shimmering, I also like RW and unfortunately if there are any clouds HDR will kill performance. So I stared to fiddle with nvidia inspector settings and after quite a bit of testing it came down to the following options: These settings yield all around best performance/quality ratio with RW and no drop in performance when in clouds and a steady 30 fps in my system. Of course if I get into big airports like Chi…

I know that FSX is fading away and It's about time I started investing my addon money in a program that has a future which I belive is X-plane. What keeps me from switching is mainly the graphics to me, a gamer they look quite dated like somthing that EA put out during the battlefield 1942 era why are the graphics so dated in some area's Ie sky textures, clouds and aircraft textures? By the I'm not bad mouthing XP as I really do like it I just wanted to know.

Has anyone noticed 2 limitations, sometimes very annoying, of VOR/DME modelling in XPX? I believe they have to do with the fact that most scenery elements are tile-based, and if you happen to be in an adjacent tile to the one where your navaid belongs, then you will probably not be able to get any signal from it, even if well under reach, or even get weird DME readings: To resume: 1) Even if your station has a range of, say, 130NM when you edit it, you wont be able to get coherent readings / signal from it until your aircraft enters the same area tile where that navaid is defined. 2) Altitude is no factor in VOR / DME reach. You can get a signal 90NM away …

"Hello guys, Today I have to be the bearer of bad news. Unfortunately we have to delay the release of the 757. We found it impossible to fine-tune the behavior of the 4 different 757 engines as close to reality as we want. Therefore, we need to get some changes into X-Plane's own jet-engine model first. Philipp is currently working with Austin on some other aspects of the X-Plane core engine and will eventually also get the needed changes for the 757 into X-Plane. Therefore, we are currently not posting a new release date, as there are too many factors at play, like the release schedule of X-Plane itself. With every bad news a good one is sure to follow. As a little per…

Hi guys . Not long ago there were two X-Plane forums , you all know wich. OK there was also AVSIM , we all know not so much happenend there except from some quarrels. Speaking about the other two ,one forum was BIG and the other much smaller ( less participants and less posts) I am amazed to see how quick things can change. Today I did some counting on the "General-fora" The big one counted 33 topics in the last ten days. The smaller one 16. BUT Here at AVSIM we had 77 being opened at the General forum the last ten days.( and NO serious quarrels!!!) Just for the record. Cheers Leen

Hi I hope that I'm posting in an appropriate forum. I'm building a simple web page to display airport information when I input an ICAO code. I can't get the runway lengths out of the world data database. I suspect that it needs calculating by adding together a selection of individual items to produce the whole, but it's beyond me at the moment. Can anyone point me in the right direction of what data I need to extract, filter and add to get this figure? Many thanks Bob

Now Im seeing posts about all kinds of problems with clouds/traffic in XPX, but they are dated, like 2012 Are they improved with recent drivers and XPX updates? allen

  23. X-Plane World Editor Scenery Packs always produce this error (which returns zero search results in Google as of June 2013): BE ADVISED illegal DSF polygon type make sure your extension is .fac, .for or .bch (io_dsf.cpp line 553) steps to reproduce: 1. Open WED (I have used 1.1 and 1.2). 2. Click "NEW SCENERY PACKAGE". 3. Rename "Untitled 1" to "31qz" (Xplane returns no results for this code, so it shouldn't interfere with anything). 4. Click "OPEN SCENERY PACKAGE". 5. Select "Airport > Create Airport". 6. Change name from "unnamed entity" to "atlanticapt" and ICAO ID to "31qz". 7. Right now I'm in a slow transition where I see myself using FSX 75% of the time, and XP-10 25%. I hold on to FSX because of the hundreds of add-ons that I accumulated over the last four years. In FSX, I always see the question, what's the best system with all sliders to the right, but since FSX never followed up with service packs for today's computers, there are many limitations. However, since XP-10 is designed for current systems, and the team is constantly pushing newer versions, is it fair to ask if there is a system that can handle all the "melt my CPU" settings? My current specs allow for a good XP-10 experience, but not quite in the extreme settings. As…
