  4. Good day, I recently got my new PC and I flew a couple of flights. My CPU Core #1 is always running at 90-100%, the temperature stays under 55 C all the time. My question is: Is this dangerous for the PC (and CPU itself ofcourse)? I hope you can answer my question! Cheers, Bart

I have been flying with my current machine for about five four years now. It is an Asus p8z68-v MB with an Intel i5 SB2600 Gpu, overclocked to 4.6Ghz with watercooling, separate SSD drives and a GTX 770 4Gb card. For some time now I have been experiencing the odd freeze and blue screen. It's a bummer because up until about 6 months ago it was as stable as a rock and I was experiencing little or no issues such as these. Recently it has become more frequent, and this week I was on a flight and the whole sim began to stutter dreadfully and drop frames into single figures. Then on another flight the whole sim just froze. After rebooting I noticed that the overclock had return…

  6. Hi, I want to buy a laptop (yes I know, is 3 times better to buy a desktop, but in this situation it needs to be a laptop). In my mind, there are 3 laptops. One has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M 4GH DDR3, the other has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 2GB GDDR5, and the last one NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M 2GB GDDR5, obviously all with a different prices. All are Intel I5-6300HQ Quad Core 2.3Ghz - 3.2Ghz Will the NVidia's affect the performance of FSX in a way that compensates the difference of the price which is 100€ each (from 950 to 960, and from 960 to 965). Or does FSX focus more on CPU? What about P3D? I really need some help in this situation so I thank you in advance.

Friends, If all goes well over the next 2 months, I will have sufficient budget for a new build for P3D and FSX. I'm fairly well convinced to get an i7-6700k and either a 970 or 980. But I'd like to save the video card debate for a different discussion. My main struggle lately is deciding on a motherboard. I've used many ASUS boards in the past and my current FS build features a ROG Maximus VI Impact, a nice mini-itx MB that has performed rather well. For the new build, I'm not limiting myself to any form factor: so full ATX or micro-ATX would be fine as I will choose a case after makig a decision about the motherboard. The problem is I see an alarming amoun…

And sadly it comes from Linus Tech Tips. I usually quite like Linus's stuff, but god knows what he was up to here. He grabs and old thermal paste he has lying around, slaps it on the die in a haphazard fashion, and then tells us that this is why he doesn't condone de-lidding, because you only shave two degrees of the temperature. He briefly mentions that some use Liquid Pro or Ultra, but seems oblivious [or pertains to be] to the fact the the use of Pro or Ultra is the entire point of de-lidding, and that replacing Intel's reasonable TIM with another reasonable TIM won't result in significant temp reduction. He also seems oblivious to the fact that most achieve a…

  14. Had fun shopping, but now even more fun finalizing my new build! Obviously, with next generation GPU's supposedly months away it's not an ideal time to do this, but I was tired of waiting, wanted to build, so here we go! Had always done mid/full ATX towers, so wanted something a bit different. Almost went Mini ITX, but wanted more room to grow and use bigger stuff. Fell in love with the options of the Thermaltake CORE V21 case... tons of expansion and cooling options, yet different than what I was used to. Here's what I went with: - Intel Skylake i7 6700K, currently running cool at 4.7 with default motherboard OC, haven't explored further yet - Corsair H115i A…

  15. We see a lot of criticism regarding Intel's decision to use thermal paste between die and IHS. The article below puts this into perspective nicely. When you understand how complex soldering an IHS to a die is, and the pitfalls that must be avoided, suddenly Intel opting for TIM makes sense... http://overclocking.guide/the-truth-about-cpu-soldering/

  16. As you may see in my specs, my laptop is not exactly a good one; however, is what I've got for FS2004. After a friend told me what he did to his 2008 Dell laptop, I'm thinking about replacing my DVD drive with an SSD (I've only used my drive 6 times in 4 years). The caveat: somehow Toshiba disabled SATA3 for my laptop, with no solution in sight, so I'm stuck with SATA2 (half of SATA3 speeds). My budget is a modest one; in the US I think I may be getting all what I need (SSD + ODD caddy) for less than USD 80. Currently, my laptop has a 640 GB 5400 rpm HDD. Taking all this into mind, do you think is it worthwhile?

  18. This afternoon I decided it would be a good time to update the BIOS on the sim PC’s Asus Hero VIII motherboard. It’s running v. 603, which is the one it came with an which is about a year and several generations old now. The download and flashing process were easy enough, and the PC booted to the new BIOS setup screen without any problems. Well, one problem: the PC now no longer saw the internal solid state drive, which happens to be where Windows 10 is installed. As a result, the PC could not boot to Windows (and certainly not to Prepar3d, which is also on that drive). Much digging and probing ensued, followed shortly by panic, as I was worried that I may have turned…

My system has been stable for years overclocked 2500k at 4.8 ghz and then it failed. So I went and bought some high quality thermal paste and the temps are good I ran prime 95 ,no problems at all. Im not getting blue screens back at my old settings but windows and fsx is unstable at ANY overclock setting above the default 3.7ghz. Anyone know what may be causing this?

Hey guys, I'm looking to finally buy my first solid state hard drive for flight simulator. I was told that SSD are better for FSX and P3D since a SSD has no moving parts so loading scenery and stuff would be a lot faster to do. I've been looking on Newegg for SSDs and I found a few that are pretty good in pricing but reviews on some of these drives are kinda making me not want to get a SSD. Most notable is these reviews, the drives fail after 3 or 4 months. Trying to avoid something like this. What do you guys recommend for a solid state hard drive? Budget is up to $500 may extend it to $600 if needed to get a really good SSD that won't fail after a few months of use.

Hi AVSIM members. Nu-be to this site. If posting in the wrong area please advise and I shall do my best to adjust. I have always wanted to build a flight simulator. Tried and failed. This will be my third attempt. Have all the parts required for a PC to run FSX, this will include a projection of the screen via a 5000 lumen unit onto a flexible curved screen. Have started the motion platform and have motors and control board ready to go 3 DOF motion. Anyway onto the problem I have, I dare say this topic has been discussed before so if anyone can suggest links then please do so.
