  1. I'm considering building a i5-7600K + GTX1080Ti portable system, so looking at Mini-ITX boards. Q1) Do I need a Noctua NH-D14 (or similar) cooler to hit an OC of around 4.7GHz? That would really limits my case options. Q2) How high an OC might I get with a low profile cooler e.g. Noctua NH-C14S or NH-L12S (NB I'm only interested in air cooling!) Q3) Any suggestions for portable Mini-ITX cases with good airflow for the CPU?

Hi guys, I have i7-6700k with GTX 1080 and I am wondering if there is any sense to upgrade to i7-8700k. Benchmarks show up to 15-20% of improvement on single core speed and in FPS in some games. Is anyone here that have already moved to i7-8700k and is willing to describe his experience? Is there any sense to switch to 6 cores at the current state of P3D? Thank you, Lukasz

  3. I've never understood this but when I have CPU voltage set to say 1.32v in the BIOS the CoreTemp I think it's called indicated 'VID' will be right around 125v. What is VID and how does it relate to voltage set in the BIOS, and is VID any indication of the current going thru the CPU, so that even though 1.32v is available as the maximum supplied voltage, a VID of 1.25v for example demonstrates it is only using 1.25v? Help! While we're here, I have a 5y/o 3930K running at 4.42Ghz w/ core voltage set at 1.32v. What I'm really fishing for is a consensus about what voltage set in the BIOS my 3930K can *safely* tolerate. Obviously w/ 5 years of nearly daily use and m…

Good morning, browsing around for a new computer and saw these on sale from Dell. I know they are not top of the line, but the prices? bad? $700 and $800 respectively. I am updating my system to 7900X with the Asus X299 Prime Deluxe. I have now 2 SSDs in RAID (Samsung 840 Pro, 128GB each), only for Win 10 Pro, the P3D is on a 850 EVO SSD 500GB. Does it make sense to update the SSDs to the NVMe PCIe, for example for the Windows (but non RAID), or perhaps the one for the P3D?

Hi All, I've had this problem the last few months. When I boot my PC, it powers up but the motherboard boot screen that normally comes up (ASUS) doesn't come on and the screen switches between Analogue and HDMI. I switch off from the main power button and it finally boots. Any ideas?

  8. Hello, I recently upgraded to the following parts: GIGABYTE GA-Gaming B8 LGA1151 Motherboard Intel Core i5-7500 Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 2400MH Everything appeared to go smoothly, but when I launched the sim to do some tests, I had was prompted to reactivate all my PMDG planes as well as FSDT/FlightBeam sceneries. I thought maybe it was isolated to sim addons, but now PFPX requires an activation too. I have no problem activating any of the software, but I'm confused as to why so many things would need to be reactivated because of some hardware changes (didn't upgrade my SSD/HDD or anything). I'm also trying to figure out if thi…

  9. I recently decided to upgrade a Gigabyte Z68 motherboard with 2700k chip into something that can be better overclocked for flight simulation. The first thing I did was add a Corsair H80. Now, several seconds after the POST beep, a high pitched whine starts to emanate from the tiny Motherboard Speaker. It is constant in pitch, louder than the very loud Corsair fans, and does not appear to be dependent on CPU load. It is continuous, while the computer is on. I have spent the better part of an afternoon trying to get to the bottom of it. I have read many many posts of people who complain of Motherboard "humming". One or two, have identified it as coming from the…

With Black Friday now "officially" underway, I am looking at upgrading to a SSD for Win 10 and P3D4. I have several questions: 1. Which SSD manufacturer would you recommend? 2. What size is recommended for the OS and for PD3. I have ORBX, PILOTS latest terrain mesh, so I need quite a bit of space. 3. Would you purchase two separate SSDs, one for the OS and one for P3D? Or would you purchase one BIG SSD, granted that gets costly. Any other suggestions? Thanks! Rich Boll Wichita KS

  13. Hi everyone, Finally got a good rig. It came with a 220GB SSD (boot) and a 1TB hard drive. I have, from my older computer, a 1TB SSD which I used as my boot drive. I'd like to use that drive in place of the 220GB SSD that came with the new computer. How can I do this? Also... bonus question: when I set up my new computer, it asked for my Windows password. I didn't realize it wanted my login password for the PC (rather than my XBOX login) so I reset it... no big deal. However, when I put my SSD back in my old computer and started up (now using my new password) I got in without issues, but it no longer recognizes me as Administrator, the backg…

I'm planning a new computer early next year for P3DV4. I do have several questions about VR ready, 4K video, etc. However my question in this forum has to do with HDD configuration. Most game ready computers come with a SSD with an additional old style HDD. I would imagine the operating system (Windows 10) would be on the SSD. Would it be a good investment to add an additional SSD for P3Dv4? What sizes for each SSD would be optimal? Appreciate any advice or feedback. Thanks, Ken

  16. I have read a number of threads here on AVSIM regarding the best CPU to run P3D v4 and remain perplex as to which CPU I should acquire for my next PC (exclusively for P3D) to be ordered shortly. Hence my list of CPU above in the title. The latest Intel CPU i7 8700K would seem to be the logical choice, but some recent performance comparisons with the 7700K were less than convincing, I read also that the i7 7740X would comfortably top it in single core performance of - 485 vs 535 in the benchmark test of Guru 3d - which P3D (if I understood correctly the various informed comments) would capitalise on. Is this a correct assumption or did I misunderstand this debate sinc…

  17. I have two pcs (and two licenses per EULA of Lockheed Martin), both have a GTX1080, but one is an i7 7700k running at stock speeds (the cooling is not so good, so I cannot count on turbo boost all the time), and the other is a Ryzen 7 1700+ OC @3.9Ghz (from the original 3.4Ghz). Comparing the two machines: 1 - i7 7700k have some edge on FPS, +10% give or take, +20% if the ryzen is kept at stock speeds 2 - Ryzen 7 have ZERO problem when it comes to loading the scenery, everything is very crisp, the intel machine have some trouble there occasionally 3 - Both systems have terrible performance at night (the know Dynamic Light resource hog), but in daytime, the GPU is c…

Just ordered a new gaming laptop with Windows 10 on 250gb SSD and 1TB HDD. Obviously I'm going to install P3DV4 on SSD. I'm wondering what else should/can go on the SSD? Currently use Orbx with Global and many regions plus a few UK2000 and LatinVFR locations. Is there a way to spilt the FTX installation between SSD and HDD? Any recommendations please?

  22. Hello all, I'm waiting on my 8700k to come in the mail at the moment and when that comes in, I'll finally be able to build my new rig. I have been holding out on upgrading to p3d v4.1 until I built this computer. Now that the time has finally come, I have a question about install location. I just read Robs guide and it said that we shouldn't be installing p3d in its default location and that we should define our own install path. Does this mean that it needs to be on a completely different drive? Or does Rob literally mean that as long as we install it in another folder other than default, we are ok and it can be installed on the same drive as Win…

Good Day Guys, Hope all of you are doing fine and are getting into the Holiday Season. Im thinking about upgrading my CPU from 4790k Overclocked to 4.6 to an i7 7700k. The upgrade will be a little costly to me, due to I have to buy a new motherboard and new ram, as my mobo supports LG1150 and from my understanding a 7700k needs LG1151... anyways, did anyone here upgrade from a 4790k to 7700k? Is/was there any difference between the two? And most importantly... is it worth the 500+ Euros? Many Thanks, Wishing you all a good day.

  24. Hi everybody, in lack of a "soundcard" forum, I try to explain my request here . Please feel free to correct me. Since I plan to build my own simpit one thing bothers me: The too good sound quality using a microphone for e.g. "intercom" (two hedsets). Voices from the radio using e.g. pilots edge sound like the guy sits right next to you, it's a to clear sound . Out of the box and using the standard Windows settings real life radio and intercom just not sounds like the real thing. Windows 10 even can just raise the quality for its mic input but lowering it is not provided. I recall that Win95 had an option to set the sound quality to "telephone" which would …

Following a recent sim rebuild, I decided to install a body shaker. I found a 100w transducer and have wired it up to a Yamaha amp that was originally driving a full 5.1 surround system with subwoofer. While it works reasonably well, connected to the orbital speaker outputs, this is hardly ideal, as it is not receiving the lower frequencies normally driven by the subwoofer outlet. Unfortunately, if I connect directly from the subwoofer outlet on the amp, I get nothing. I understand that there needs to be a separate amp driving the subwoofer? This is where I fall down.I'm unsure what It is I need. Can anyone offer any advice. thanks fellas.
