  1. Hi all, this morning my sim PC decided to quit on me. In the middle of a flight it just went black. Did some testing and it seems that my good old de-lidded [email protected] has died after 4 years. With the 12V CPU power connected, the PC immediately shuts off after turning it on. With the CPU power disconnected, it stays on. So pretty clear that there is a short-curcuit related to the CPU. Now the big question is: Replace with a 7700K Kaby Lake or wait for a hex-core 8700K Coffee Lake? I can live with no simming until winter as I don't have much time for simming in the summer anyways. However, I'm not really sure if waiting for Coffee Lake is really worth it as the sing…

  2. So I want to build a new PC in December but I really don't know what parts to pick, I've been looking at the Ryzen 1700X and the Intel i7-7800X, my budget is $2000 and I will be streaming when I get this PC. It would be nice if I can get some help with this? I'm honestly a noob when it comes to picking PC Parts.

I have my main desktop, but for travelling for work I bought some HP laptop a few years ago. As I don't use it that often, I keep going back to how they put in a 5400 rpm drive into it, making anything to load painfully slow. Furthermore, I keep thinking I should get an $150 SSD for it, but since the laptop was $500, it is almost not worth it--other than my sanity during hard drive operation. It has an AMD A10-5750 in it with 6 gig of RAM (quad core at 2.5 ghz). IT appears that 1 gig is used by the video card. So, I am thinking of starting to offload applications from my desktop onto it. So, is that cpu good enough for external applications? If it is and I star…

In the latest edition of PC Pilot there is an article by Jessica Bannister-Pearce describes her new custom-built PC. She describes the current state of her four-year-old flight Sim computer and the upgrade process she has recently followed. It's a reassuring article and what I like most is that she is not afraid to say that she upgraded it to a SECONDHAND 980 video card (or was it 960 - I'm away from the article now) and seemed delighted with the results so far! Not all of us can afford to spend £2,000 plus on new machines with the latest video cards and I wanted to thank Jess for the insight. What would be useful Jess (if you're reading this) is if you cou…

Folks, How much of a performance increase would one get from a 6700K running at 4.7GHz to a 7700K running at 5.2GHz in P3D V4? I have the opportunity to buy a 7700K that is running at 5.2GHz, but not sure it's worth spending the money over my current 6700K. Appreciate any feedback! -B

Hello all, I have searched and failed to find any discussion on this subject, albeit lots of discussion on CPUs. I was just wondering/intrigued/curious about whether or not the following could possibly be relevant. Given the ifferent use of CPU cores by different simulation platforms, would a CPU choice based on a preferred Sim, ie P3Dv4 or XPlane 11, be logical? This question comes to mind after reading an article recently about XPlane being able to utilise more cores/threads than P3Dv4. I do not know if anyone is aware of LMs plans in this direction, after the huge leap forward with 64bit, but at this point in time, I lean towards thinking as follows:- …

Hello, I have recently bought a new pc and I am about to install WIN 10 Pro. The motherboard is an ASUS Maximus IX Z270. My question is, how should I proceed with the installation of the MB drivers (in order to get the best performance of my system): - should I use the provided CD drivers of the Asus motherboard? - should I download the updated drivers from Asus website? - should I let Windows 10 install the motherboard drivers (in this case there is a high chance the drivers are not Asus provided)? Many thanks! Dragos

Hi, I have been almost 4 years away from FS and see that there were numerous new releases and developments since then. I intend to fly either on FSX or P3D v4 with aircrafts like PMDG 737 and Aerosoft CRJ (not purchased yet). Sceneries would be such as Flytampa LOWW (not sure if it is being used anymore) and aerosoft offerings. Weather would be by ASX (also not sure if it is outdated). I am not interested in AI nor other ground traffic enhancing addons. My question is - what is needed to run the above smoothly without any stuttering? Do I need to change the whole old system, and if not, what should I upgrade? My current system is: i7-3770K Process…

Ok, possibility of a new job beckons. If so, I'll be mostly hotel based and my Cosmos is certainly not a frequent flyer! So, looking at the current Laptop offerings, I'm tempted. However, I know that frequency is still king., I can get a 17.3" machine, built with desktop CPU, twin SLI 1080 and running 4ghz. This compares favourably to my current setup. Lot of cash, but it will be portable and I can take my pedals and joystick in the case when I go away. Opinions please. The Current machine is in my sig below. all to run Flyinside, an Oculus and some periphery to go with DCS, FSX and X-10. I'm going to upgrade to P3D shortly and X11 soon I think. Mostly it's…

Dear all, As I want to start flying again I also need a new desktop. I am reading a lot and I come to the following: Budget: 1200 EUR (1400USD) What do I want to run: FSX SE, perhaps P3D and XPlane with weather enhancement and maybe few good PMDG planes such a B777 and B747. So far, my choice is between: i5 7600K + GTX1060 GB (who is running with i5 7600K and what are your results in FSX?) i7 7700K + GTX 1050 ti 4GB What system will give me reasonable performance? I would be happy if I could run with all sliders to the right, but medium would be great as well. Smooth and high FPS is more important then quality of view. Both s…

Pulled the trigger finally and upgraded from my x79 Asrock Extreme9/ I7 3930K to the X299 platform - Asus ROG STRIX X299-E Gaming with the highest single threaded speed processor The I7-7740X. 1 click of the mouse was all it took to OC it to 5Ghz using the ROG software. Word of warning if you ever install a Corsair H115 - Nowhere in the instructions does it say to plug in the SATA cable to anything, but if you don't it won't work, I had great trepidation that it wouldn't be a worthwhile upgrade or maybe only a few FPS at best and I couldn't be happier that I was wrong. I was on the fence quite a while to get a 7700k or a 7800X or 7820X but after LOTS of read…

Hi, For now I have 2 x 8 DDR3 1600 HyperX Fury Blue. I was planning to add 2 x 8 to have 32G. I'm now on P3Dv4. Question: In place of my DDR3 32G, is it not wiser to take 16G of DDR4 (financially I can not buy 32G of DDR4) Will I actually feel a difference between the DDR3/1600 and the DDR4/2666MHz? Had my computer pro here today that maintains our company machines. Took my standalone sim machine apart, and installed a new 17 7700k processor, new mobo and memory, 2 - new GTX 1080ti -s, and a Samsung 960 EVO additional SDD to give me one more hard drive. OS is Win7, computer refused to recognize the original SDD that has all my FSX stuff on it. Will not boot. So I am dead in the water for now. He has taken it to his shop hoping to somehow clone the drive that is not responding and find out why?. Maybe I will be back in business with P3Dv4 before Christmas. However I will keep reading avsim and stories untill I can fly again!!
