I may need to replace the AMD processor under warranty. I was using a custom heat sink and a recommended thermal paste (came with the heat sink). The AMD warranty states that it will be void if another heat sink was used. I have traces of the paste (which is very stick) on the CPU and I figure I have to clean it up really well to lift any suspicion that I was using another heat sink. What is the best way to clean it up? BTW, I never overclocked.Michael J.

I have $250 to upgrade my system. I am using FS9. My current system is a Athlon XP 1700/266 with 256 DDR333 memory and video driver built into motherboard (no AGP slot on board) and a 400 watt power supply.I am looking at the following system.Pentium D 840 3.2 on a MSI PM8PM-V motherboard/ 500 watt power/ 1 mb PC4200 533 memory and either a GeForce FX5500 AGP 8X with 256 mb or XFX GeForce 6200 AGP 8X with 256 mb.Any comments or suggestions. Should I expect a significant boost in performance with this upgrade? Which video card is better? Any suggestions on a better upgrade approach based on budget amount?

I am in the process of replacing my HP 17" CRT monitor. I've had it for 5-6 years, and its on its last legs. I do a lot of flight simulation on my computer, and have been pleased with the high quaility image produced by my HP monitor. I am thinking of replacing it with another HP 17" flat screen CRT (the MX705). An alternative that I've considered is upgrading to a flat panel LCD, but I have heard that the flat panel LCDs don't perform as well with the high graphics demanded by today's FS applications, and further that their life expectancy is not as good as the older CRT technology. Also, the CRTs are a lot less expensive. Any recommendations as to CRT vs LCD flat pane…

Hello,I've all the time been using 2x anti-alias setting for FS and Application Preference for VATSIM VRC software, set via the Control Center. Everything has been working just fine until a few days ago I started to get some strange problem. Having the AA set to 2x in the Control Center, it shows up fine in the FS, but when I minimize FS and come back to it, the AA is not working anymore and the image is zigzagged. The only way to get AA back again is setting something else in the 3D options, then Apply and then back to the 2x AA setting. Just like before, it only works until I minimize FS. It cannot be FS issue, because I tried with Live For Speed and exactly the same st…

Hello! I just had a new graphics card installed. It is a GEForce 7600GS,AGP,512 MB. The driver is dated 06-01-2006. Well, so far the graphics I'm getting in FS are awful!! Lots of squigglys, and blurries and frankly I feel the images should be much sharper than what they are!! I've tried doing some tweaks from inside FS in the settings area with only slight improvement. I've also gone thru the re-building the FS9.cfg route which did not do much of anything. So I'm wondering if anyone out there might be able to lend a hand on this?? Any help would really be great!! Thanks much..... Dan Green

Rumour has it that FSX likes high performance graphics with lots of graphics memory. I've recently seen a deal for an X1900XTX 512M card for $275ish after rebate, which is a very good price, and was wondering whether it has a noticable enough performance boost over a 7900 GT 256M (which I can get for around $50 cheaper than the X1900XTX).Will the extra 256M video ram make any difference in FSX performance, assuming max AA/AF settings?Acknowledging that the beta and demo has a fair share of graphical glitches, from both a performance and prettiness perspective, do nVidia cards or ATI cards handle the fledgling FSX better?GaryPS. I am on my second download of the FSX beta, …

I'm trying to hook up some old gameport joysticks(a SideWinder, and a CH Pro Pilot + CH pedals) but no matter what I do, my computer won't detect none of them! It does show the gameport under Device Manager and it says that there's no conflicts. I've already tried to install new drivers, change the IRQ/address in the setup screen. But nothing helps. I know I get get a gameport to USB converter but I want to know if this is fixable and if I'm doing something wrong. Does anybody have any ideas? Does it have anything to do with the MIDI interface as well? My motherboard is a ASUS A8N-SLI Premium and all the joysticks work on another computer. Thanks!

Hello, I already used two monitors with my AGP Radeon 850XT graphic card. This worked pretty fine, also with FS9.Now I tried to create a real surround view with a third monitor. Therefore I bought a PCI graphics card for the third monitor. In order to get windows work on three monitor, I had to made a change in the bios of my motherboard: the PCI card has to start before the AGP card in order to work. Now, I can use three monitors with Windows XP at the same time. But the problem: now FS 9 does not recognise any graphic card any more. Therefore frame rate went down to approx. 2/sec.In other words: if in the Bios AGP card has priority over PCI card, I cannot use three monit…

In the realm of Flight Simulator, can any gurus shed some light on the better scenario to have...I have two hard drives in my system - One gets about [green]128[/green] MB/s, but has a random seek time at [red]13[/red]msThe other gets [red]80[/red] MB/s, but has a random seek time at [green]8[/green]msWhich of the two would you put MSFS on?WIth so many little files (BGL's and Textures) I'd imagine that the lower seek time drive would be more suitable as it can get to the files faster. With so much to load before flying (lots of files and textures), perhaps the higher bandwidth drive would be more suitable as it can brute-force load them faster. What would be your bias in t…
